The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens during the first modern Olympic games was also both the 2004 Summer Olympics venue for both archery and the finish line of the marathon! The former Centennial Olympic Stadium in Atlanta was actually rebuilt twice. Immediately after the Olympics, it became a baseball stadium as you mentioned for the Atlanta Braves, named Turner Field. But when the Braves departed Turner Field in 2016, Georgia State University took over the stadium and reconfigured it for their college football team. Initially it was called the Georgia State Stadium, but in 2020, the university sold naming rights to a credit union, and it became Center Parc Stadium. During the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Luzhniki Stadium was known as the Central Lenin Stadium, which was the name it received when the stadium opened in 1956. It wouldn't be called Luzhniki Stadium until 1992 after the USSR collapsed in 1991, its name meaning "the meadows" deriving from the flood meadows of the bend of the Moskva River where the stadium was built. During the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Maracanã Stadium was ONLY used for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the semifinals and finals of the football tournaments. Meanwhile, the track and field events were held at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, the home stadium of Botafogo, which was renamed after famed Botafogo player Nílton Santos in 2017.
The Beijing National Stadium/Bird's Nest is a masterpiece of a stadium! A stadium worthy of a spectacle that the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony was, which remains my favorite opening ceremony. The drummers left me in awe. A masterpiece ceremony in a masterpiece stadium. The stadium was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, ArupSport, and the China Architectural Design & Research Group with Ai Weiwei as artistic consultant. The design implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof which gave the stadium the appearance of a bird's nest. The retractable roof however was later removed from the design after inspiring the stadium's most recognizable aspect. So yeah, despite its nickname of the Bird's Nest, it originally wasn't meant to be a bird's nest! For those who don't know, it was inspired by a combination of the crackle glazed pottery that is local to Beijing, and the heavily veined Chinese scholar stones. This inspiration shows just how passionate the Chinese are with their history and culture. And while not being a bird's nest, architect Li Xinggang (who helped work on the stadium) said it's still a compliment as bird's nest is expensive in China and eating bird's nest is something for special occasions.

It is allowed, but it's not easily accessed or advertised. I was there for work a few years back (2014??) and a Greek colleague found out for me. I did an interval training session on the track which was just an incredible feeling
For Brisbane 2032 The Gabba is already there as a 44,000 seat round stadium official the Brisbane Cricket Ground. They want to knock it down and rebuild it from scratch. The Gabba name comes from the shortening of Woolloongabba which is the suburb it sits in next to the City.
Why do they want to demolish and rebuild the Gabba? Why not demolish the stadium used for the Commonwealth games in 1982? and build a brand new stadium to hold say 80,000 people.
The capacity of the Sydney Olympic stadium was stated as 110,000 when the 2000 Olympic games were in progress. The end sections of the stadium were rebuilt after the games finished. The capacity of the stadium is now 80,000. The 1956 Olympic games were held at the Melbourne cricket ground(MCG). The MCG has had sections rebuilt since and the capacity is now about 120,000.
The stadium was most memorable for its closing ceremonies, due in part to how they went from Men At Work performing "Land Down Under," to their famous "Waltzing Matilda." My guess is that it's now being used either for its NRL Rugby, and/or for the Sydney Swans in AFL.

Born and Raised in Brisbane where had the Commonwealth Games . Why spoil the traditional fighting ground of The Gabba where it had always been the of the first cricket test every year as well as the home of the Brisbane Lions AFL Club. They would be better off revamping QE2 stadium where it would make more common sense to have the opening of the games and an already athletic track.
you should have mentioned that the olympic stadium in montreal was opened for the games before it was finished. the leaning tower you spoke of in the video wasnt even there. it wasnt completed till many years later. now all these years later they are still trying to decide weather or not to fix the roof or just tears it all down.
Yes, and best of all it was privately financed (by Los Angeles Rams owner, billionaire Stan Kroenke) so public tax money was not used for the stadium unlike most in the US!
The MCG has been changed a bit since 1956 with the last major change to the stands coming for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. However, sport has been played there going right back to 1858

There are several things you should notice in this video: 1.The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens during the first modern Olympic games was also the finish line of marathon games during the 2004 Olympics. 2.The Luzhniki Stadium during the 1980 Olympics was still known as the Central Lenin Stadium. It was renamed after the fall of Soviet Union. 3.The Centennial Stadium used for the 1996 Olympics is rebuilt twice. Initially called the Georgia State Stadium, the university sold naming rights to a local credit union, hence Center Parc Stadium. 4.The Stadium Australia used for the 2000 Olympics is renamed three times due to the sponsorship reasons (Telstra, ANZ, and now, Accor Hotels). 5.The Olympic Stadium used for the 2012 Olympics is commonly known as the London Stadium, hence the city that hosted the Olympics. It is now a permanent ground to West Ham United after they left from Boleyn Ground in Upton Park. 6.During the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the Maracana Stadium was ONLY used for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the football tournaments (including the finals). The athletic events (track and fields) were held in Botafogo's ground, the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange (it was renamed to Nilton Santos after the Olympics). 7.The Stade de France for 2024 Olympics is reserved ONLY for the closing ceremony. For the first time in the history of the modern Olympics, it will be held outside the stadiums, in the Jardins du Trocadéro and Seine River.
@@lawrencewood289 Leasing means contracting with another party. That means West Ham do not own, they lease under conditions for 99 years, including the concession to athletics. So the point being made is it is not permanent and within that time there are contractual conditions to another party. West Ham had full decisions on what to do with Upton Park (for some reason people referred to the far less used name Boleyn Ground in the final year)
@@sgu02nsc66 Almost no professional sports teams have been in their grounds for 99 years (at least in the US. I recognize some English and Scottish football clubs have longer stadium histories). Also, in the US fairly few own their stadiums since they diddn't solely fund construction. In my book, that makes the Olympic Stadium the "permanent ground" for West Ham.
@@alcazarugerio Manila doesn't have any Olympic-worthy stadiums, nor do they have an active bid for 2036. I think it will go to Istanbul, Seoul or Copehagen. The weird thing about India's bid is why not a more famous city like Mumbai or Delhi? Most people outside India have never even heard of Ahmedabad.
The Gabba rebuild for 2032 might not happen. The stadium does not have its own block of land. It sits on a block that is occcupied by a good number of other highrise residential and office buildings, and they will need to also relocate an entire primary school which has heritage listed buildings, in order to build the stadium. Its cheaper to build an entirely new and bigger stadium from scratch in the middle of a park.
The Brisbane stadium is very contested between government parties (and Olympic and non-Olympic committees) and the people as to the smartest and economically the best option between The Gabba (demolish and rebuild), QEII stadium (demolish and rebuild) and a possible new stadium which could be Albion or Hamilton. Would have preferred if Queensland (The state) chose Gold Coast as the Olympic bid candidate as it held the commonwealth games with very high success both for the community as well as the government before during and after the games.

Ah yes, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, with direct access from the Montreal Metro. For many years afterwards, because of the debt incurred by the city of Montreal, the nickname for it became "The Big Owe".
The inclined tour of the Montreal stadium was far from being finished by 1976. Took years before completed. They also had huge problem with the roof and some beams fell off but no injuries. Took decades before being paid for by, among other things, taxing cigarette smokers. The tax stands to this day of course with multiple other taxes. CAN$ 10 to CAN$ 20 a pack. Used by the Montreal Expos baseball team for a short time, Montrealers now call this stadium the white elephant because it is barely used at all.
Wrong. Maracanã was not the Olympic Stadium at Rio 2026, just the venue of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games. The Olympic Stadium in Rio was the "Estádio Olímpico" built to the Pan Am Games in 2007 and expanded to the Olympics. Just a click on the Internet and you can find hundreds of images of the stadium, where 4 world records in Athletics were settled. This is the right information.
My favorite is the Luzhniki stadium. Beyond the concrete and steel, we could also smell History when you look at these pictures. It would be have better to put the current configuration as a lot of these stadiums have been transformed nowadays.

A real pity the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo was never fully used in 2021 due to the pandemic. Hopefully, Japan will find use for it. I hear the original L.A. Memorial Coliseum will host the 2028 Olympic Track & Field events, while SoFi Stadium will hold the opening ceremonies, and then the aquatics events.
I wonder if the IOC will award an Olympics to Tokyo for the 3rd time sooner than later to make up for 2020/2021 not having any spectators. The infrastructure exists. I'm sure there will be a bid process where none of the candidates have a solid plan and the IOC will just award it to Tokyo because they have the venues already.
South Africa's internal problems and the legacy problems of the 2010 World Cup have taken away any possibility of the country hosting major events again.
Cape Town has an Olympic-worthy stadium but is still lacking in many of the other venues. They also have made a few unsuccessful bids in the past. The first Olympics on the African continent would likely be in Cape Town.

Go LA Memorial Coliseum! One of the three geatest Olympic athletes venues ever!!
Hosting the Olympics always repeats itself
Having existing Olympic venues makes it easier on both the host city and the IOC.
Muito interessante seus vídeos 👏🏾
you should have mentioned that the olympic stadium in montreal was opened for the games before it was finished. the leaning tower you spoke of in the video wasnt even there. it wasnt completed till many years later. now all these years later they are still trying to decide weather or not to fix the roof or just tears it all down.
Melbourne and Sydney 🔥
Omg... 5,5 billion dollars for one stadium!!!???
The man responsible for the stadium, Stan Kroenke, has a tiny penis and a lot of money so he built a mega stadium for his football team to compensate.
The largest, Stadium Australia in Sydney cost a mere $655m and this included the world's largest cauldron.
However, sport has been played there going right back to 1858
In 1956 the stadium held more than 104000 I know there was on day of over 114000 turned up
@@jecos1966The MCG once had a capacity greater than 135 thousand people, but over time and constant modernizations have meant that it currently has 95.000 seats in the stands.
@@debonidaniel I know that and largest Sports crowd was the 1970 grand final of 121.969
Maracana was not the stadium for the T&F events. It hosted the opening/closing and football.
There are several things you should notice in this video:
1.The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens during the first modern Olympic games was also the finish line of marathon games during the 2004 Olympics.
2.The Luzhniki Stadium during the 1980 Olympics was still known as the Central Lenin Stadium. It was renamed after the fall of Soviet Union.
3.The Centennial Stadium used for the 1996 Olympics is rebuilt twice. Immediately after the Olympics, it was a MLB stadiums for Atlanta Braves, named Turner Field. When Atlanta Braves departed for a new ballpark, Georgia State University took the stadium over for the American Football purpose.
You forget that archery was held in Panatenaic Stadium at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
The London Stadium is not a permanent ground for West Ham Utd, it is a multi-purpose stadium leased by West Ham Utd for 99 years.
@@sgu02nsc66
Huh? That's pretty near permanent! Longer than the Boleyn ground!
@@lawrencewood289 Leasing means contracting with another party. That means West Ham do not own, they lease under conditions for 99 years, including the concession to athletics.
So the point being made is it is not permanent and within that time there are contractual conditions to another party.
West Ham had full decisions on what to do with Upton Park (for some reason people referred to the far less used name Boleyn Ground in the final year)
@@sgu02nsc66
Almost no professional sports teams have been in their grounds for 99 years (at least in the US. I recognize some English and Scottish football clubs have longer stadium histories). Also, in the US fairly few own their stadiums since they diddn't solely fund construction. In my book, that makes the Olympic Stadium the "permanent ground" for West Ham.
Mexico 🇲🇽👏🏼
I hope that the 2036 Stadium will be Mexico's Azteca
Mexico withdrawn from the 2036 Olympics bid to focus at the 2027 PanAmerican Games bid.
@@debonidaniel ok hmm now I think the decision it's between India, Phillipines or Turkey
The Olympic Stadium in Rio was the Nilton Santos, not Maracanã.
Maracanã was used for the ceremonies and football.
前に開催された都市で再びオリンピックが開催されることはよくありますが、既存施設を改修(あるいは改築)することが多いですね。
Barcelona mejores juegos olímpicos de toda la historia 🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦
Do one for the Winter Olympics now
The Brisbane stadium is very contested between government parties (and Olympic and non-Olympic committees) and the people as to the smartest and economically the best option between The Gabba (demolish and rebuild), QEII stadium (demolish and rebuild) and a possible new stadium which could be Albion or Hamilton. Would have preferred if Queensland (The state) chose Gold Coast as the Olympic bid candidate as it held the commonwealth games with very high success both for the community as well as the government before during and after the games.
Well I’ve seen White City London which is no more
The old Wembley stadium London, went pass Paris st Denis as was called
And finally Los Angeles colosseum
Would love to visit more
Ah yes, Olympic Stadium in Montreal, with direct access from the Montreal Metro. For many years afterwards, because of the debt incurred by the city of Montreal, the nickname for it became "The Big Owe".
12:42 Paris has hosted them three times now but the first city ever to host the Olympics three times is London.
The Gabba is built already. It's just the renovation that they are squabbling about.
At some point, Buenos Aires must be the host for the Olympic summer games
Argentina can't even afford to host the world cup by itself
Who will host in 2036?
Maybe India 🇮🇳

Oh I'd take that bet. India has never once even bid and you rarely win your first bid.
@@lawrencewood289 Most people outside India have never even heard of Ahmedabad. Why not a more famous city like Delhi or Mumbai?
The inclined tour of the Montreal stadium was far from being finished by 1976. Took years before completed.
They also had huge problem with the roof and some beams fell off but no injuries.
Took decades before being paid for by, among other things, taxing cigarette smokers.
The tax stands to this day of course with multiple other taxes. CAN$ 10 to CAN$ 20 a pack.
Used by the Montreal Expos baseball team for a short time, Montrealers now call this stadium the white elephant because it is barely used at all.
COOL
Favourite olympics are Sydney and London 2012.
tokyo 1964 stadium is closed in 2014, and make a new stadiun for tokyo 2020.(new stadium venue is changed)
Wow.
My favorite is the Luzhniki stadium. Beyond the concrete and steel, we could also smell History when you look at these pictures.
It would be have better to put the current configuration as a lot of these stadiums have been transformed nowadays.
Huh?! Really? try LA! Or Berlin where Jesse Owens ran. Or LA for the great Carl Lewis. Luzhnicki is where the Polish pole vaulter literally flipped the crowd off.
I like Centennial Olympic Stadium and Stadium Australia. 😎
The GABBA is an existing venue. They will be upgrading it for the Olympic Games.
This channel is wonderful; however, it made a significant error. During the Rio 2016 Olympics, the Olympic stadium was not the Maracanã but rather the João Havelange Olympic Stadium, renamed in 2017 (after the Olympics) to Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium.

London Olympic stadium 🏟
In Rio de Janeiro 2016 the Maracaná stadium was not the main stage. But it was the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium with a capacity of 46,000 spectators. 🏟
If I'm not mistaken, the LA Memorial Colosseum will also host the closing ceremonies in 2028.
Meanwhile the whole Africa continent to Olympics : Am I joke to you ?
They win plenty of medals. When they get their economies in order let's talk.
With so much money spend to host the Olympics i dont see them being hosted in Africa, perhaps South Africa could try but doubt
South Africa's internal problems and the legacy problems of the 2010 World Cup have taken away any possibility of the country hosting major events again.
That was in 1964
Its sad Africa hosted NO Olympic games yet Africa is strong at track and field 😢
Africa will host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics. The games will be in Senegal.
