In 1980, my dad directed a production of Charlie Brown for a community theater in NJ (they were very happy to have him, as he had a bunch of Broadway experience). The guy who played Snoopy was fantastic, and a year later he was offered the title role in the national tour of "Snoopy" (which was not nearly as good a show as Charlie Brown, but had some lovely moments). He turned it down in favor of starting college. We couldn't believe it -- college would still be there after of the tour! 30+ years later, when I reconnected with him on Facebook, he mentioned that he had previously turned down an audition for the role of Tobias in the original production of Sweeney Todd! He thought it was a yucky subject for a musical. Best I can figure, he was a rich kid (Haddonfield, where the theater was based, was a very wealthy little town) and didn't feel any particular pressure to do anything in particular. FWIW worth, he became a very successful writer (mostly writing gay-themed fiction in a number of genres). I read one of his short stories, and it was some of the best writing I've ever encountered. There's a fantasy sequence that is so compelling and engrossing that I was as surprised and shocked as the character when it ended abruptly. His name, while I'm praising him, is Hal Bodner. If something like his WeHo Vampires series (about gay Vampires in the West Hollywood milieu) would interest you or someone you know, seek him out. Sorry for the rambling reply. I just have a lot of associations with this show. I musical directed a fantastic Equity production of it in 1993 in Hollywood, FL, and it's one of my fondest memories in the business. Man, that score is a joy to play! Again, sorry. I do go on.
Darren Zieger Wow! First, never mind about rambling on. It was a nice tale. Hal's choosing college over Snoopy was a good choice. Seems as if his talent didn't run dry and his reasons for turning down the Sweeney Todd part may run deeper than you know. I'm a screenwriter not yet sold but aiming for the moon in the next universe. Your father sounds interesting and it runs in the family? Cool! Here's a good article on Hal. fangirlnation.com/2015/09/16/bite-club-getting-to-know-the-author-hal-bodner/ Happy New Year and grand success to us both!
Yeah, I've seen that one. It's a nice article. He's had a really interesting life, actually. But it's too late, and my hand too sensitive from a paper cut, to do that much typing at the moment. Later, perhaps...
Actually, here's his official bio on his site. Like the rest of the site, it hasn't been updated in, at a guess, 7 or 8 years, but it's intriguing. www.wehovampire.com/author.htm
never been in a musical in my life, never done any concert performances ever, but auditioned for this a week ago, and got charlie brown and was double casted. This is my second favorite musical.
Me personally, I'm using this to study. I'm in musical theater and my teacher chose this as the musical we're going to preform. I kinda want to audition for Lucy BUT I'm new to preforming and an introvert plus she has A LOT of dialogue, now I have no clue who I should audition as. To anyone who's using this to study for theater this is a good video to watch for reference in my opinion
my theater department is also doing this musical, and as a fellow introvert, go for Linus! its really easy for me to slip into his character, and it helps me warm up to being on stage. he also has his song (only one big moment), which is really great because i got used to being in the spotlight real quick. If not Linus, go for Schroeder!
Everything you said is EXACTLY the same for me. Seriously I’m kinda scared. I’m thinking about going for Lucy but it’s my first time so idk what to do. I think I might just go for it.
This was a perfect cast for this production. I did this show in Los Angeles in 1992 as a Lighting Director with a cast of kids ages 8 to 14. It was the highlight of my 14 years as a volunteer in children's theater.
Mad props to the pit and music director/conductor here... I'm following along with my script and score preparing for casting of our HS production tomorrow, and WOW did you manage to follow some serious rushing.
This is my second favorite musical. I was cast as Frieda in fourth grade. The part was created because we didn't have a cast member that looked like Patty, but we did have girls that looked like Violet and Frieda. This was before they put Sally in the show.
@@TheMiniClix No, we were all very talented, we all sang very well. We just happened to actually look like the characters that we were cast as. The way they cast it was the school choir was already in the play, so, they already knew that we could sing. We only had to read, and learn the dances to get a character. The kids that had the most talent, and looked like a character got the parts. That way we didn't need to use makeup.
Anyone here came to see how good and underrated this is man this reminds me so much of the part the goof the bad and the sad times of you are still reading this, I wish you the best for you to overcome your current struggle
I’m Linus in a local production, I’d just to thank the cast as I’ve watched this video about 200x. Also Justine Cohen, if you’re out there, will you marry me? Lucy really stole the show for me.
My school was gonna do this musical, I was casted as Sally but since this whole Corona thing it might get canceled, so it’s really fun to see it performed by other people! They definitely did a good job😊
It's interesting how nobody gets this musical. It's supposed to be an adult's impression of "Peanuts," not a literal translation. In the original production, no effort was made to make the actors look and dress like the comic strip characters. It doesn't matter much, but it tends to reduce a once classy show to children's theater.
It was an amazing production! My only comment is that the guy who played Charlie Brown was a bit off key and isn't as strong (vocally) as the others. However, he was an amazing actor. Everything else was incredible!!
Awww lucky! The theater that I'm doing it at had only one boy audition, so he got Charlie Brown- despite being really bad. I mean, I got Lucy, but still...
This is a performance of the revised version from 1999 and not the original from 1967. The original had Peppermint Patty instead of Sally and much of the script was changed including the musical numbers. I was Schroeder in our 1977 middle school performance of the musical and I'd like to find a recording of the original.
Yeah, I queued this up for my girlfriend who'd never seen it, and it was very disappointing in quality, and very much not as I remember. Thanks for clearing that up. That is *not* Gary Burghoff!
Actually it wasn't Peppermint Patty it was a different character named just Patty, she was a very major character in the strips early years but eventually was phased out for other, more developed characters.
at my school we are doing this play and i can’t decide who i wanna audition for. i’m between snoopy and sally. we can only choose one to audition for. i’ve been wanting to be in a musical for so long! i hope i get one of the two
PrinceTrexus I feel like the guy who played Charlie Brown could easily cover up the fact that he’s not the best singer by over acting the group number parts and solos
I was in my schools production of this this year, and it was so much fun, I was a dancer. We did it a lot different though, all the dancers were female, we had a platform in the background and lots of other things were different to
I was casted as Charlie Brown and our first rehearsal is tomorrow! Also, I’m a girl, and I can’t find anything on TH-cam about a girl playing him. Has anyone heard of a girl who played Charlie Brown before? I’m just really curious.
I played Linus many years ago in high school and I'm now musical directing the show. First...congrats! Linus is such a wonderful role. He's the most centered, thoughtful, secure, and, of course, the smartest of the characters. He needs to have an air of the guru about him, though always calm and without any attitude. wow the girl who played Snoopy was really good!
I disagree she did okay. she should have gone over the top with the character.
I gained the part of Snoopy by scaring the heck out of Sally in auditions. I went over the top. We all have our way to do it. :-)
Paul Plumlee, our C.B. had a beautiful tenor voice. The Kite was gorgeous ! Our Snoopy was horrid. A B.J. was his audition !
Sara um well she's not as good as the snoopy in my play
