@@javierqb8898 if only hahaha, I expect within my lifetime, 50-60 years most likely, the most optimistic estimate I have seen is 30 years, but I feel like that is wishful thinking.
Just saw the news on the breakthrough in fusion reactor energy and how the chances of it being practical have increased significantly hopefully it'll be a reality soon.
No matter how small, thanks for your work. Even if it won’t happen in our generation or the next, fusion is bound to be the energy of the semi-near future, and it’s important that we pave the road to it right now. So thanks again for your work
If not any big problem occurs during the next few years, the first fusion in ITER is programmed for December 2025. Go on their TH-cam channel ! It is so impressive ! They post videos at least once a week and we can see how it goes... These weeks they are assembling some parts of the reactor ! It is so impressive
4 years later and 100 million degree temps have been achieved for 20 seconds straight, with more improvements on the way. It's 100% possible, it's just tremendously difficult

the weirdest thing just happened, I was doing my chem homework, started thinking about nuclear power, that led me to this video, which led me to look up fusion reactor progress. Amazingly 3 hour it broke that for the first time scientists actually had a positive net gain energy from a fusion reaction . Absolutely nuts.
It was only after I watched this video that I realized Sam Raimi actually researched fusion reactions and didn't just make things up in Spider-Man 2. When Doc Ock talked about "Precious Tritium" and how it was what made his project possible, I thought it was just some imaginary substance. Now I realize that there's serious legitimacy behind it.

After watching many Kuzgesagt videos, I have come up with the steps to mastery of the solar system: 1. Create moon base using skyhooks for cheap transportation 2. Get large amounts of energy using helium 3 and fusion 3. Using this energy, construct and power a station capable of mining asteroids autotamanously. While this is under construction, send a shuttle to a nearby asteroid rich in resourses and bring it back using gravity math stuff 4. Expand asteroid operation until rich in resources 5. Expand to Mercury, and set up a system to propel solar panels in order to begin construction of the Dyson Sphere 6. Complete dyson sphere and set up system that can effectively move the solar system using the energy from the sphere and mass from the sun. 7. Come close enough to a black hole that we are able to construct a large glass dome around it and use it as an infinite energy source 8. While were still along way from it being commercially viable, its proof of concept and can now allow fusion energy to advance at a much faster pace, and other countries will also likely catch up with this new development and it'll become a arms race to make it more efficient and cheaper for commercial use. This can only mean good things as it means near limitless clean energy, which would fix many problems in the world and is very desirable.
@Sunny bob Quackers yes, they do. People in power can't stop natural advancement and why would they? This is simply a good thing that can help so many people. And somethings are free. And even if free energy means more humans, free, clean energy means no global warming, pollution, energy crisis's etc. Fusion is the way foward.

@Ezio Auditore Europe has invested lots of money on it. France has the largest fusion reactor currently (the ITER mentioned in the video); this year Italy is building an experimental prototype that should improve on France's technology--the so called DTT project. So, the US is not alone in this--it's actually a worldwide project, as it should be (many teams from plenty of countries work together, often in real time)
Only in technicality. They may have just put 6 loops, and then the pixels become too small to see anyway. Try watching it in a bigger screen, or zoom in.
FUSION ENERGY UPDATE PLEASE. This channel is the best way to explain to people in lay-man terms how this breakthrough will positively affect our planet and species as a whole.
remember, this is simply proof of concept and not commercially viable. However now it can advance at a much faster rate and other countries will enter a arms race to make fusion energy more efficient, cheaper and commercially viable, which can only mean good things as global warming will become less of an issue, same goes for pollution, and there won't be energy crisis's anymore.
They did a set on nuclear fission, they mentioned advanced reactors. If they did a video on LFTR, it wouldn't be long enough likely, but if they did one all advanced reactors they might fill the time. Hopefully they know some people to iron out the details, and if they don't me and my nuclear engineering buddies can point them in the right direction.

Please make an update of this video! :D :D :D We are all so excited about fusion + National Ignition Facility made 2 major breakthrough; one in August 2021 and then a few days ago they managed to produce more energy than they used, first time ever. Never thought so much progress would have been made in only 6 years :) With the US government, Google, Chevron and other companies starting to pour billions in fusion energy, it really looks like it might happen in our lifetime. And with recent news, more funding might even pour in these projects from other investors.

@@javierqb8898 and with the proof of concept people are going to now try to make it more efficient and cheaper, and more people will convert to using fusion. I only wish we had poured this kind of effort into fusion earlier so we wouldn't be in such a bad situation.

@@TheRatsintheWalls Quantum computing already exists. In vitro meat is not feasible because of cost, like nuclear fusion. I don't really know if a "sky hook" is even a feasible idea in the first place. The rest (true AI, curing aging) is likely not possible, but at least definitely cannot happen anytime soon. Aging can be treated as we already know how, and AI can constantly be developed. The AI topic is a very interesting one and honestly is probably the most feasible in our lifespans.

@@kaungsatthein8172 you know, you need a lot of protons ie, H+ and gravity with high temp to start the fusion reaction, but the sun has way more lot of hydrogen, but only 20% of it goes for fusion, and till now only 5% have turned into helium among those 20% hydrogen, the remaining 80% hydrogen only contributes gravity and cannot be used as fuel for fusion you know a star will be a star until it undergoes fusion.

Trump was talking about bringing back Coal for example to "create jobs", or the Germans I think are still subsidizing the manual Auto industry because they say switching all cars to Automatic would be much cheaper and simpler and would destroy tons of jobs. So they intentionally remain inefficient to avoid mass unemployment. -Actually a video about how future labor and economics could work that adapts to more and more efficient industry would be interesting. As we get more efficient we have less and less jobs and more people need to become entrepreneurs to even have a job. That last one would interest me the most xD

Agreed. Fission is an underrated energy source and the technology has vastly improved since the '50s. Thorium reactors may be the best way of getting rid of today's nuclear waste, even.
Holy shib I thought it was well known Thorium isn't a feasible replacement to nuclear power. To those who don't know chemistry it might sound great but chemically it just doesn't function in the fission process the same.
You didnt research did you? Actually thorium is considered a possible nuclear fuel ( liquid fluoride thorium reactor) trought breeder reactors or a MSR reactor. the problem as all new is that it needs more research, investigation and the key word ... FUNDS...

jediyoshi64 Fusion technology plans and the science behind it has been in circulation for decades, It just hasn't worked beyond about 50% efficiency until these past two.
This is a great video I show to everyone when the subject comes up. Which is maybe 1-2 times per year. And that’s the reason we don’t have nuclear fusion: there is almost no public awareness of it. Nuclear fusion is a proven idea. If we have any doubts, just look up at the sky every day (not directly of course). It’s an engineering issue, not a concept issue. $10 billion may seem like a lot of money - and it is. But we spend more than that every year in the US alone on unproven, obsolete, or inefficient energy technologies like fossil fuels, solar, wind, and hydro. More public awareness and promotion for nuclear fusion, and less for dead end “green” tech, and fusion will finally get the funding it deserves. And in a generation we will have solved our energy problems.
If a tokamak is the way to go, we won't have confirmation by ITER research project until 2035 or later after it goes full fusion. In the meantime, we need to figure out how to replace coal plants with non-fossil fuel energy. Maybe geothermal (in places like Hawaii) or offshore wind.
We create tritium in our CANDU reactors. Tritium reactors can also make their tritium by bombarding lithium with their high energy neutrons. The engineering of tritium breeding may not be as out of reach as lunar mining. Molten lithium salts can deliver the thermal energy to the power plant and breed the needed tritium. If we use deuterium (D-D) fusion then we would have all the energy we would ever need here on earth with no radioactive fuel at all. Most of the tritium produced in this reaction is consumed in secondary reactions. D-D fusion is harder to break-even which is why ITER uses D-T fusion.
Tritium is produced in relatively large quantities at basically all nuclear power plants. It's even commercially available in the form of small phosphor vials used in watches and glow sights for guns. I've even got a tritium vial necklace.
***** Heavy water is only one neutron away from making tritium, so a CANDU would make lots more compared to a LWR. Light water needs 2 absorptions to make tritium. Tritium fears are also exaggerated, gun sights are powered by the stuff.
Would you be able to replace the cadmium control rods in a nuclear fission reactor with lithium to absorb the thermal neutrons, or is the flux too high to safely use that for tritium production?
Hi I'm from the future, Dec 11 2022 and a fusion reaction just created a net gain of 20% press conference coming Tuesday. Interesting to see who will try to hold back and oppose the steps needed to develop this now that's proven possible.
The only problem is if you just write scientists $10 billion cheque they wouldn't quite know what to do with it. The parts for the ITAR reaction has to be made by specialist companies from all around the world, and even then they don't always meet the requirements of what the scientists want, and has to be sent back for modifications. Even then they still don't know if the machine will work. Certainly more money will be helpful but sometimes when making new science there's no substitute for patience.
All true, but it would still help a lot if governments contributed more to science budgets, which tend to be rather overlooked compared to shit like buying more missiles/planes/aircraft carriers etc.
Not true, patience does not get you anything. We sat on our ass for decades and starved nuclear research and space R&D off funding, and progress basically stopped there. This is not fundamental research like general relativity, instead it's an engineering problem. Engineering problems are solved very well by correct application of £££. If there was a sustained high level of funding then you can build the industrial complex you need, train more scientists, etc.
We never advanced as a species by "Sticking with what works." We kept expanding and experimenting, testing new ideas, some of which ended up working better.
I don’t agree. You must have slept through the last 600 years. Good news is farmers are not feudal property anymore, human rights were conceived, reason made its way to the top human value, wars, poverty and illiteracy are on an all time low... Wait until fusion power comes to end with the last resource we have there’s not enough for everybody. Can’t wait.
The difference is that all of these experiments that changed the world didn't take 40 billion dollars upfront just to see if the technology was viable. Otherwise, fusion would already be pumping energy into your house.
@@facuigua12 Not necessarily. There are 100s of companies and 1000s of oil barons who probably don't want fusion to succeed in their lifetime. They may even have taken steps to slow down the research funding and spike public opinion to keep fusion from becoming a mainstream power source. Nuclear fission it's still a good choice tho. It produces a LOT of clean, low cost energy and the "nuclear waste" it's very little and almost completely recyclable. It's also very safe, reactors can handle earthquakes and tsunamis, and so are the cask containing waste, just look on yt all the test they put it through: trains, missiles, fire.

Well actually yeah. Thermal energy and kinetic energy are the same thing. Heat is merely the sensation of the transfer of kinetic energy. Running fast will produce heat through friction between him and the ground, him and the air, him and his clothes, between his own muscle fibers, etc. Not to mention the enthalpy released in all the chemical reactions to keep his body running and in homeostasis. Yes, the faster you run, the hotter you are. You may notice this if you have ever sweat before... swote.
There are many other elements that are required for nuclear reactors, apart from the fuel. There isn't enough on Earth to satisfy the demand of all other industries, so where are you going to get more? Mining operations in space are still a long way off, and likely to be incredibly expensive.
Cept it's already being done. Tomoaraks exist and have for a while. Stellarators are coming, and the Wendelstein 7-X already test fired successfully. By this time next year, they will have run the 'continuous' test as well, and if it proves viable, which the results they have so far are more promising than they originally expected them to be, then it won't be long before someone makes a reactor.
the most interesting thing to me about this, is that its just the heat source. the fusion reactor will probably do what all other power sources do, boil water, spin turbine, create electricity. It will just do it without any wast product.
OK... you need about a trillion more, though. The US has spent $30 billion on fusion energy research since the 1950's with no practical application yet. ITER has cost $15billion (triple the initial projection).
+Jeremy Patton And unnecessary wars have funding in the trillions of dollars. The money is out there. It is just in the wrong hands. Also, you do know that 30 billion in research since the 1950's is basically nothing, right? The '50s were almost 70 years ago. The only reason it is not being funded is regulations and restrictions are put on fusion tech by legislators that were influenced by lobbying and their own personal interests. The money exists. It is just not being put in the right places. No, a rich billionaire would not be able to help alone, but if one wanted, they could help pay our "elected officials" to actually pass what is needed to be passed. That said, billionaires are human and humans are naturally greedy and short-sighted.

Um, that's great and all, but doesn't solve the energy problem at hand. I think switching money from fusion research into renewable infrastructure development, and battery R&D is money better spent at this point.
Jeremy Patton At this point, yes, it probably is, but in the long-term, fusion energy seems like the logical next step if we are to engage in large-scale space involvement. We may never get to that point, but if we do, easy access to the moon and its dust would mean massive energy generation. Right now, we just need to get more of a push behind any form of renewable energy. In many areas, there is no funding go into any of it at all.

@Tuosan That is precisely the reason that alternative energy solutions meet such resistance in the US. A large chunk of the US' massive economy is fuelled by the war industry, which has not stopped since WW1.

A small fission bomb inside brings the fusion material to the needed temperature to detonate and sometimes around the fusion material is even more cheaper but lower quality fission material that cannot be detonated on its own. Pure fission bombs are rare today because the combination bombs have a way higher explosive Force with better weight and cost.

The Genzs would also make sure that the earth is safe and clean. I'm doing this at Uni right now :) So a few things, fusion is unproven, but the ITER reactor that is being built in France is a huge international project (costing more than the ISS) which should take us a huge step forward. I'm told, by my lecturers and industry experts who work at places such as the JET reactor in the UK, that fusion is no longer a scientific problem, it's down to engineering. Even though fusion has been 10 years away for 50 years, it is making progress. Even nuclear fission is cleaner than most forms of wind and solar power, but fusion is next level. Unfortunately with fusion, testing it is expensive as reactors are expensive. Virtually any other form of power generation you can test till failure (in fissions case you can even just blow up reactors and make a new one), but with fusion its millions to billions to make a test reactor, nevermind test it till failure! That's one of the main reasons progress is so slow. Great vid as per, getting so many snippets of info into one place. I'm confident fusion will get there, especially as material technology is advancing such as high temp superconducting magnets, they vastly lower the amount of energy that needs to be put into a reactor. Lol I could ramble about this all day, but I'll end it here for now haha.
An update on this comment, I'm now heading on to do a PhD on irradiation of metals for the first wall of a fusion reactor! In association with a project called STEP in the UK!

If not any big problem occurs during the next few years, the first fusion in ITER is programmed for December 2025. Go on their TH-cam channel ! It is so impressive ! They post videos at least once a week and we can see how it goes... These weeks they are assembling some parts of the reactor ! It is so impressive

Amazingly 3 hour it broke that for the first time scientists actually had a positive net gain energy from a fusion reaction . Absolutely nuts.

After watching many Kuzgesagt videos, I have come up with the steps to mastery of the solar system:
1. Create moon base using skyhooks for cheap transportation
2. Get large amounts of energy using helium 3 and fusion
3. Using this energy, construct and power a station capable of mining asteroids autotamanously. While this is under construction, send a shuttle to a nearby asteroid rich in resourses and bring it back using gravity math stuff
4. Expand asteroid operation until rich in resources
5. Expand to Mercury, and set up a system to propel solar panels in order to begin construction of the Dyson Sphere
6. Complete dyson sphere and set up system that can effectively move the solar system using the energy from the sphere and mass from the sun.
7. Come close enough to a black hole that we are able to construct a large glass dome around it and use it as an infinite energy source

We are all so excited about fusion + National Ignition Facility made 2 major breakthrough; one in August 2021 and then a few days ago they managed to produce more energy than they used, first time ever.
Never thought so much progress would have been made in only 6 years :) With the US government, Google, Chevron and other companies starting to pour billions in fusion energy, it really looks like it might happen in our lifetime. And with recent news, more funding might even pour in these projects from other investors.
Six years ago fusion was a fairy tale, yesterday the news said we made it profitable in energy terms, when are we going to make it cheap enough? In January? XD

I don't really know if a "sky hook" is even a feasible idea in the first place. The rest (true AI, curing aging) is likely not possible, but at least definitely cannot happen anytime soon. Aging can be treated as we already know how, and AI can constantly be developed. The AI topic is a very interesting one and honestly is probably the most feasible in our lifespans.

the sun has way more lot of hydrogen, but only 20% of it goes for fusion, and till now only 5% have turned into helium among those 20% hydrogen,
the remaining 80% hydrogen only contributes gravity and cannot be used as fuel for fusion
you know a star will be a star until it undergoes fusion.

Holy shib I thought it was well known Thorium isn't a feasible replacement to nuclear power. To those who don't know chemistry it might sound great but chemically it just doesn't function in the fission process the same.
You didnt research did you? Actually thorium is considered a possible nuclear fuel ( liquid fluoride thorium reactor) trought breeder reactors or a MSR reactor. the problem as all new is that it needs more research, investigation and the key word ... FUNDS...

This is a great video I show to everyone when the subject comes up. Which is maybe 1-2 times per year. And that’s the reason we don’t have nuclear fusion: there is almost no public awareness of it.
Nuclear fusion is a proven idea. If we have any doubts, just look up at the sky every day (not directly of course). It’s an engineering issue, not a concept issue. $10 billion may seem like a lot of money - and it is. But we spend more than that every year in the US alone on unproven, obsolete, or inefficient energy technologies like fossil fuels, solar, wind, and hydro.
More public awareness and promotion for nuclear fusion, and less for dead end “green” tech, and fusion will finally get the funding it deserves. And in a generation we will have solved our energy problems.

If a tokamak is the way to go, we won't have confirmation by ITER research project until 2035 or later after it goes full fusion. In the meantime, we need to figure out how to replace coal plants with non-fossil fuel energy. Maybe geothermal (in places like Hawaii) or offshore wind.

We create tritium in our CANDU reactors. Tritium reactors can also make their tritium by bombarding lithium with their high energy neutrons. The engineering of tritium breeding may not be as out of reach as lunar mining. Molten lithium salts can deliver the thermal energy to the power plant and breed the needed tritium.
If we use deuterium (D-D) fusion then we would have all the energy we would ever need here on earth with no radioactive fuel at all. Most of the tritium produced in this reaction is consumed in secondary reactions. D-D fusion is harder to break-even which is why ITER uses D-T fusion.
Tritium is produced in relatively large quantities at basically all nuclear power plants. It's even commercially available in the form of small phosphor vials used in watches and glow sights for guns.
I've even got a tritium vial necklace.
***** Heavy water is only one neutron away from making tritium, so a CANDU would make lots more compared to a LWR. Light water needs 2 absorptions to make tritium. Tritium fears are also exaggerated, gun sights are powered by the stuff.

10 billion doesn't seem that bad when a single B-2 stealth bomber costs tax payers nearly 2 billion dollars.
The only problem is if you just write scientists $10 billion cheque they wouldn't quite know what to do with it. The parts for the ITAR reaction has to be made by specialist companies from all around the world, and even then they don't always meet the requirements of what the scientists want, and has to be sent back for modifications. Even then they still don't know if the machine will work. Certainly more money will be helpful but sometimes when making new science there's no substitute for patience.

Not true, patience does not get you anything. We sat on our ass for decades and starved nuclear research and space R&D off funding, and progress basically stopped there.
This is not fundamental research like general relativity, instead it's an engineering problem. Engineering problems are solved very well by correct application of £££. If there was a sustained high level of funding then you can build the industrial complex you need, train more scientists, etc.

The difference is that all of these experiments that changed the world didn't take 40 billion dollars upfront just to see if the technology was viable. Otherwise, fusion would already be pumping energy into your house.
@@facuigua12 Not necessarily. There are 100s of companies and 1000s of oil barons who probably don't want fusion to succeed in their lifetime. They may even have taken steps to slow down the research funding and spike public opinion to keep fusion from becoming a mainstream power source. Rich People can be pretty petty when it comes to money and who gets it.

Nuclear fission it's still a good choice tho. It produces a LOT of clean, low cost energy and the "nuclear waste" it's very little and almost completely recyclable. It's also very safe, reactors can handle earthquakes and tsunamis, and so are the cask containing waste, just look on yt all the test they put it through: trains, missiles, fire.

Well actually yeah. Thermal energy and kinetic energy are the same thing. Heat is merely the sensation of the transfer of kinetic energy. Running fast will produce heat through friction between him and the ground, him and the air, him and his clothes, between his own muscle fibers, etc. Not to mention the enthalpy released in all the chemical reactions to keep his body running and in homeostasis. Yes, the faster you run, the hotter you are. You may notice this if you have ever sweat before... swote.

There are many other elements that are required for nuclear reactors, apart from the fuel.
There isn't enough on Earth to satisfy the demand of all other industries, so where are you going to get more? Mining operations in space are still a long way off, and likely to be incredibly expensive.

Cept it's already being done. Tomoaraks exist and have for a while. Stellarators are coming, and the Wendelstein 7-X already test fired successfully. By this time next year, they will have run the 'continuous' test as well, and if it proves viable, which the results they have so far are more promising than they originally expected them to be, then it won't be long before someone makes a reactor.

OK... you need about a trillion more, though. The US has spent $30 billion on fusion energy research since the 1950's with no practical application yet. ITER has cost $15billion (triple the initial projection).

Also, you do know that 30 billion in research since the 1950's is basically nothing, right? The '50s were almost 70 years ago. The only reason it is not being funded is regulations and restrictions are put on fusion tech by legislators that were influenced by lobbying and their own personal interests. The money exists. It is just not being put in the right places. No, a rich billionaire would not be able to help alone, but if one wanted, they could help pay our "elected officials" to actually pass what is needed to be passed. That said, billionaires are human and humans are naturally greedy and short-sighted.

Um, that's great and all, but doesn't solve the energy problem at hand. I think switching money from fusion research into renewable infrastructure development, and battery R&D is money better spent at this point.

At this point, yes, it probably is, but in the long-term, fusion energy seems like the logical next step if we are to engage in large-scale space involvement. We may never get to that point, but if we do, easy access to the moon and its dust would mean massive energy generation. Right now, we just need to get more of a push behind any form of renewable energy. In many areas, there is no funding go into any of it at all.

A small fission bomb inside brings the fusion material to the needed temperature to detonate and sometimes around the fusion material is even more cheaper but lower quality fission material that cannot be detonated on its own. Pure fission bombs are rare today because the combination bombs have a way higher explosive Force with better weight and cost.

I'm doing this at Uni right now :)
So a few things, fusion is unproven, but the ITER reactor that is being built in France is a huge international project (costing more than the ISS) which should take us a huge step forward. I'm told, by my lecturers and industry experts who work at places such as the JET reactor in the UK, that fusion is no longer a scientific problem, it's down to engineering. Even though fusion has been 10 years away for 50 years, it is making progress. Even nuclear fission is cleaner than most forms of wind and solar power, but fusion is next level. Unfortunately with fusion, testing it is expensive as reactors are expensive. Virtually any other form of power generation you can test till failure (in fissions case you can even just blow up reactors and make a new one), but with fusion its millions to billions to make a test reactor, nevermind test it till failure! That's one of the main reasons progress is so slow.
Great vid as per, getting so many snippets of info into one place. I'm confident fusion will get there, especially as material technology is advancing such as high temp superconducting magnets, they vastly lower the amount of energy that needs to be put into a reactor.
Lol I could ramble about this all day, but I'll end it here for now haha.
An update on this comment, I'm now heading on to do a PhD on irradiation of metals for the first wall of a fusion reactor! In association with a project called STEP in the UK!
