I’ve had this car in Ireland now for 2 and a half years and I’d only change it for another one or an egolf if they looked a bit better I’ve 20000km on the clock and I’ve used approx 900 Euro s of fuel 75% of my driving is in electric with a charger at home and work This machine is genius
Nice one lads. Bought my GTE a couple of weeks ago and your analysis was pretty similar to my initial thoughts. Battery hold comments were the same as my understanding. City councils will increasingly put tough emission standards on central areas. Therefore, drivers will need to save the battery for that leg of their journey.
In regards to hold, I do use it on a daily basis. This is due to the fact that I cannot charge the car at home, but I will do within the next little bit. For the meantime I charge at my local Tesco lol. So for me, it ensures I still have battery left. Hold is a bit weird, it doesn't not use electric at all. It will actually use Electric at lower speeds and revs until it gets to a certain percentage below the current charge rate, and then charge back up the level it was when you put the vehicle in hold. This is usually between an eighth and a quarter of the gage. Again, it's a weird one that has small use cases, but for myself is very useful for the circumstances I'm in.
Re hold, it's really useful if you are driving into an ULEZ zone (e.g. London) from a distance further than the battery would take you. Charge day before, then drive in 'Hold' until reach ULEZ, then swap to E-Mode. I use this quite a lot.
Excellent presentation as always. Always enjoy watching your reviews, especially when looking around at cars at the depot. Great backing sounds as well. Thanks guys.
I would maybe guess battery hold might come in handy when you know you’re going to hit standstill/rolling traffic in rush hour. So you can use the engine for good mpg on motorway for example, and then just slow roll in traffic on your battery to get the best ‘mpg’ overall, as that’s not efficient for the petrol engine!
battery hold on motorway, and ev only in the emission zones like london, at some point cars will have to use a gps tracker system, which will switch between the 2 automatically as you enter/leave emission zones.... the ford transit phev thats been trialled in london at the moment uses this system...
You can try the b mode in hybrid mode to get the GTE battery charge with the hybrid energy consumption. Although i do not know if i then brakes on the engine or brakes when throttle is off.
@@benjamintjnneng4213hen you press the E-mode button you wil see the 3(or 4 in older model) options on the infotainment screen where you can choose the mode.
I live in Norway and use Battery hold every time i drive with my caravan. I have a Burstner 460 premio that is 1500kg I want to save my battery for when i need the boost from GTE mode when i climb up our mountains, and when i need power to pass all the slow Danish motorhome drivers on our tiny Norwegian roads. Always trying to use my battery down to 10% at the mountain top, then i dont have to use my brakes on the way down and get back to 100% battery when im back to sea level. If im not at 100% battery close to when im on my way down, i switch to battery charge and charging battery faster and at the same time driving down the hill at a realy low cost. This make me drive my car + caravan at the cost of 0,85 to 0,90 Liter pr 10 kilometer. Thats not bad for a total weigth of 3540 kilo if you ask me :-)
I also love to save some battery for when i drive into a big camping late at nigth on electric mode. When camping the electric is incluided in the cost, so i always leave the day after with 100% battery :-)
Yess the production cost can come down when you produce more but you need to keep developing and sell those slightly better developed cars too. So the best thing to do is to spread the inovation cost over all VW models.
I mostly driving around town so I use e mode and charge every two days, I start to see a massive difference in charge level, my range I started with, I started with 38 miles, in a week I started to only get 33 to 36 miles and after two weeks I only got 28 to 30 miles, I then went on a 80 mile round trip using hybrid mode and let the car do its thing and now I’m back up to 33 mile range, if I do the same journey it will go up again, II have managed to get a 42 mile range charge doing this, so what I have learnt is driving in just e mode is rubbish idea , driving in charge mode in the flat or up hill is rubbish and wastes off fuel., but if you drive it down a long stretch, it’s not too bad ,and for the gte mode, yes its thirsty but fun.
Excellent presentation and informative - I await delivery of my GTE. The 35mile issue is an important one. My friend who does similar distance uses hybrid on motorway and battery in town doing his but to town environment- don’t know the mpg on that one. Many thanks

Have you tried to use the VW Data Plug with the GTE? According to Volkswagen, all features of VW Connect are not compatible with GTE models. But I'm curious about what features are working. I can not find this anywhere on the internet.

Can you do a vid where you investigate the 'battery charge' mode and how much petrol it uses etc and whether it's worth using that mode maybe when you're on the motorway and then using the electric when in a town centre

Wow that's a big delay! Hope it's worth the wait.
We use battery-hold to give us a charge left for a zero emissions zone👍
Thanks for helping out on that one...couldn't understand it.
Battery hold mode is also supposed to be used by the guys dropping demonstration cars off so you have full charge straight away !!
the gte mode recharges the battery so you don't lose range and can drive in gte mode all day.. ehm maybe check the specs??
Battery hold is used for commuting to a zero/low emission area, so petrol to get there then ev mode in the zone.
Interesting - seems weird when you see them in places that aren't even near a zero/low emission zone though.
not sure what you mean, i'm just commenting on the "battery hold" feature

Good point, next time we get a Golf GTE we'll test the B mode (brake mode) I think most people generally just leave it in D.

Hope it's worth the wait Terry, sure it will be. VW producing 3 electric or hybrid models across their range isn't taking it seriously we don't think.
Can the GTE be driven without ever having to plug in but still making use of the battery like I think Prius drivers can?
You wouldn't ever have to charge the battery, but you could still benefit from regenerative braking for example.
The answer is yes. Though it makes no sense...

A lot of people buy a hybrid because you pay a lot less taxes, usually these people never charge or drive the car electric.

We don't think the battery charge mode is worth it at all! We'd rather use full petrol than be burning fuel for short electric miles.
