      I LOOOOOVE MasterClass. Learning so much from all the courses and I only just signed up with them less than a week ago. I watched Disney CEO Bob Iger talk about his life and having a business and leading a business and how you need to talk to people.. then I watched an FBI ex-negotiator talk about how to negotiate and all the out of this world secrets and experiences., then I watched a world renowned make up artist talk about make up and how to apply it and all the secrets of make up art.. now I’m watching Malcolm Gladwell and a super famous graphic designer who broke the ground and introduced new trends interchangeably.. just amazing, amazing, amazing lessons.. I can’t get enough lol. I mean these people are the best in the world at what they do... I wouldn’t be surprised if MasterClass got Oprah one day - or I hope they do, or Barack Obama or Michelle, or someone similar, which would bring on huge amounts of subscribers to them.. or Nicole Kidman, or Julia Roberts.. or Brad Pitt... Tom Cruise.. or maybe that green Earth activist from Europe.. or maybe that other girl who was shot for education.. It’s super exciting, and honestly I think that most of those guys don’t need the money.. but they’re definitely getting way more than that... like recognition for their business, or a place to think about and to process and reflect on their work.. and just this really happy feeling that you’re giving back and helping others grow

    I like the old white dude sci-fi, especially Heinlein. When I found NK Jemisin, I knew nothing about her identity, but I loved The Fifth Season and the Obelisk Gate. I seriously didn’t know if the author was male or female, it was just good. Looking through my audible library, it looks like I bought “Stone Sky” but haven’t listened to it yet (I lose track of what I’m reading and listening to when I relapse). Seeing articles online that say “every women should read this sci-fi” book has me baffled. Everyone, period, should read The Broken Earth Series. And it’s fantasy... IMO (Unless that article was referring to other books by this author). If I could pay 15 per month, monthly, rather than annually, I’d start taking these classes for sure.

    • @antmagor
      @antmagor ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Just to clarify she didn’t say the old white dude sci-fi was bad. She was saying she couldn’t relate to it and that was all there was at that time when she was growing up. In other words that deficit was what inspired her to write the way she writes, and to break into an industry where people like her were not present at the time.

      @@Chocopacotaco1413 remember the days when they would vote on the story actually being good. Not read her work personally, so I can't say for sure if her work is actually worthy of the wins. But even if it was good enough. A trilogy always has a weak book in it (except the Lord of the Rings, i say this because the Lord of the Rings is actually one book, that was split into three by the original publishers marketing team, cause it would have cost a lot to buy back then, as one volume, and there was another reason as well that escapes me at the present time, it's still technically one book) so at least one of her books wouldn't have been good enough to win, the year it was nominated. No one is that good at writing. So I imagine at least one of the books won through virtue signalling.

    This brain hack works to effortlessly eliminate writer's procrastination for both fiction or non-fiction: Simply erase part of the last sentence you've written for that day. Your mind is hardwired to be working on it, so that you "can't wait" for the earliest time to get back to writing some more. Do this every time. If your last sentence is so golden you don't want to erase it, write another line and erase part of it.
    If you're stuck and haven't written in a while, go back to where you left off and erase part of the last sentence you wrote.
    Your last sentence might change almost every time. Who cares because you're on your way!
    IOW, you've just conquered the biggest challenge to writing for most writers and done it effortlessly.

    “As a young black girl reading a bunch of middle aged white dudes, there wasn’t a whole lot speaking to me”
    By her own logic, why should anyone who isn’t black and female take her course, let alone read her books? This toxic ideology needs to stop. Look, I’m Asian and some of my favorite writers are White, some of my favorite actors are Black, some of my favorite comedians are Jewish. My personal heroes are American, European, African, Asian, etc. This idea that ONLY the people who look just like me can speak to me, or understand me, or represent me, or inspire me, this idiotic idea is corrosive and toxic and needs to end.
    And how far are we supposed to take this ideology anyway? Are we to watch movies only made by our own race, only consume news made by our own race, only vote for politicians of our own race? Millions of non-Blacks have been inspired by Martin Luther King Jr, who in turn was inspired by Mahatma Ghandi. We can be touched, and understood, and inspired by ANYONE.
    Identity politics is poison and will destroy society. We must reject it everywhere we encounter it.

      Yeah, i was instantly put off when she started with the racism/victim crap. The logic of fighting racism with racism is, like you said, very corrosive. I mean, I cant think of a single book I have read where the characters skin color is described and used to define them! How you chose to envision the text is purely self projection based on your own experiences. In my experience, writing does not come across as white, black, asian or whatever. It is what you - the reader - DECIDE it is. I simply dont get it, all she did was just appeal to the mass 'woke' hysteria on social media to sell her class.
      Further note: I have read the first book in the broken earth trilogy, and I didnt think "Oh, this must have been written by a black women" i didnt even know N.K Jemisin was a women!

  • @SoundEngraver

    You help change the profession by writing good stories. To suggest a reader can't relate to characters who look different from them is narrow-minded. Taking from her example, stories with alien protagonists won't speak to me. Science fiction works on a deeper, more fundamentally human level than that.

    • @AllezVous222
      @AllezVous222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Of course we can all relate to characters who don't look like us, since the human experience is universal - we all have hopes, loves, hates, etc. However, when you are a kid who is often excluded from things in real life because of your background, and then you also don't see people who look like you anywhere in the genre that you love, you start to feel that no world - reality or fantasy - is for people who look like you, like maybe you don't deserve to be in any world at all. And, even though you know that that isn't true on an intellectual level, that message would still hit you because, after all, if there is nothing wrong with how you look, how come people like you are never featured, you know? You don't have to look like a character in order to relate to them, but when you never see people who look like you featured, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that you don't have the right to your own narrative. I understand your knee-jerk reaction, but you sound like a nice person, and I hope you can at least try to empathize (since we're talking about the human experience and the ability to relate).
      Let's look at it from another angle: look at the people who DO often see characters who look like them. They are unable to relate to the more often-excluded readers. They respond angrily and defensively when diversity in character appearances is brought. They ostracize minority readers in fantasy, sci-fi, and cosplaying communities because, *drumroll*, characters who resemble underrepresented readers are seldom present. A person can be told, in many different ways, that they are excluded, without actually having to be told, "You're excluded."
      I'm not talking about being unable to relate to an alien who doesn't look like you. I'm talking about seeing a white character wielding a magic sword, going on a hero's journey, over and over again, and never seeing anyone who looks like you, not even once, can make you feel minimized over time. If you don't believe me, look at the more hostile and ignorant comments left by white readers below...or just wait for someone to respond to me; it's only a matter of time before someone responds patronizingly in a mocking, stereotyping manner, and/or twist my words.

    • @SoundEngraver
      @SoundEngraver 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@AllezVous222 Thank you for thinking I'm a nice person, I sure hope I am. I grew up in the 90's and all my shows had a mixture of ethnicities. I had a healthy respect of diversity as an American kid. The problem with today's push for inclusion is that it truly is at the expense of a people group, where that group doesn't matter and deserves to be pushed down. I will continue to read the classics, no matter the race or ethnicity of the writer. What matters is story. What matters is good mythology that will stand the test of time.

      Love this. In fantasy someone can be blue-skinned. I think the greatest connection to character goes beyond the thin layer of skin and into the heart: the emotions the characters are going through, the doubts, questions, fears, hopes. Harry Potter was huge first and foremost because every child in a public or private school can relate to bullying. I was considered the most popular girl in my elementary school and yet I was still viciously bullied by some kids (who happened to be black boys and Hispanic boys lol). On the outside, I look white, I'm actually Cuban, but I could relate to Harry and never once thought in my little brain that he was a boy and white so I couldn't relate. Skin color or gender never even infiltrated my thought process. The story had me because I cared about Harry and related to him. Anyways, she sounds like a good writer and I don't give a dang what skin color her main characters are. One last thought...blacks are a big minority. It makes sense there is not many black writers. There's just not as many black people as there are European, Caucasian, even Hispanics. It has nothing to do with underrepresentation--there simply isn't as many to represent. And as for this Latina, don't freaking scoop my work because I'm Hispanic. Scoop it because it's good and you don't care what gender or ethnicity I am.

      see, i want to reply to you in an articulated manner but im too sleepy right now, so if you still care about this discussion, reply back or something and I'll see it in the morning lol
      I cannot create an argument as solid and as cohesive as Tammy's. but I can try to explain something which I think you are missing.
      When any black author or consumer means when they say "a protagonist that looks like me", we dont just mean 'looks', or 'acts'. I think you undertand this part.
      Its about the experience of being a minority. how you see life when you are born different from what society wants from you. This experience is *fundamentally* different from the life experience of any white, upper-class, academic, american or european hetero man in his middle age. very different. And they cannot fabricate that life experience _because they dont know it_. and they never will. shit, they wont even try
      When NK Jemisin described the protagonist of this book series as a black woman with locs, I smiled and cheered. Might seem small but that representation is important.
      A lot of our daily lives are constant fights. For some black people, wearing natural hair in the workplace is risky. For some black people, their _existence_ in some spaces is a political act. And that is because of ignorance. plain and simple. ignorance that turns into intolerance that turns into bigotry.
      So seeing a character with locs in a good story which might be read by tons of people may help break away a little bit of that ignorance.
      Seeing someone that looks like me being succesful in their field brings me hope.
      We really shouldn't have to explain this to you but racism exists lol. A good story IS important, but it is not ALL. (out of curiosity I skimmed your channel and I noticed that you are an artist, so) I expect you to understand that in a world with social imbalance - where some human lives are not treated the same as others for no logical reason - it is the RESPONSABILITY of not just any artist, but of any other decent human being to FIGHT that imbalance. Representation in books, movies, ads, etc IS a way of fighting that imbalance.
      Again: a good story IS important. but social consciousness is JUST AS if not MORE important.
      [this came out longer than i expected. not sorry for any bad english. pls read more black authors]

How did she talk down about them? Well if I complained about sports being oversaturated with Black men and hinted at a bias instead of accepting that maybe they are just talented people and that its a difficult industry to get into without genuine skill and dedication then what would you call it? Another good one is defending such divisiness by calling it lived experience but similar to the story "Animal Farm" some lived experiences are treated as more valid then others when its convenient. I was intrigued by what she was saying initially but instead of just showing us a glimpse of creativity, knowledge and ideas (which she did at the start and I do offer my compliments on that) she had to say something divisive and rude.
