Just thought I'd add a warning that the original version of the Wiim Ultra has a few compatibility issues in their HDMI eArc PCM implementation (i.e. periodic micro audio drop-outs for HDMI input.) The good news is that I reported this to WiiM and they sent out a replacement unit free of charge. Now I have TWO streamers, with one serving for TV duties 😎 Bravo, WiiM!
I bought a 2nd hand one last week for $280. $263 new, you're right, that's crazy! I've got mine hooked up to the TV and Roon going out to full B&O system and just just a Cayin RU6 Dongle DAC between the Ultra and the Amp. It sounds amazing. This one ultra replaced a Sonos Beam and Sonos Port.
Done…arrived tomorrow to be hooked up to a 50 year old amp/receiver and speakers. Can’t wait to try the room correction…and liberate my WiiM Mini back to the basement stereo lair.
Fun unit…can’t say that either the better DAC chip or the room equalization helped a ton over the WiiM Mini…but who’d know? Nice unit, nice presentation, and the remote helps immensely with the volume adjustment that is somewhat awkward within the app when controlling song play from a streaming service. Now I can put the mini back onto the basement music lair system. Funny to have a 2024 component feeding a fifty year old system…but also delightful.
Wiim Ultra -> Acoustat TNT-120 amplifier -> Acoustat Model 3 electrostatic speakers. Feeding Technics SL-1200GAE turntable with Denon DL-103 cartridge directly into the Ultra MC phono stage. Life is very good!
Doesn’t the Pro Plus have a better chip set with the AK4493SEQ or do the options on the ultra outweigh the Pro Plus? I am always looking for the best sounds.
I can’t say enough good things about the Wiim Ultra! I put it in my bedroom set up with an Apple TV 4K, using the HDMI eArc out from the TV into the Wiim Ultra. I then feed the audio signal via RCA to a Mytek Brooklyn Amp (250 watts/channel) that feeds a pair of LSA Statement 100 speakers. I also feed the sub out on the Wiim Ultra to a Kanto SUB8VMB 300W Sealed Powered 8 Inch Subwoofer. The sound in my bedroom is stellar!!! I love the Wiim Ultra because it just disappears in my set up and does what it is supposed to do. But with its great app and its room & parametric EQ, along with great audio and subwoofer management capabilities, it just allows you to dial your music or sound right into your sweet spot! And because of the wonderful HDMI eArc integration, I only have to use my simple Apple TV remote to turn on and control my entire system. I love it! Such a great product!!! 🎼❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️🎼
I can’t wait for mine to show up tomorrow. It’ll be used in my bedroom system too, which is a Sony STR-DH190, Schiit Modi- 3 DAC, Pioneer BS22 Andrew Jones speakers, and a Jamo C910 Sub. HDMI ARC, EQ, and bass management should round be a great addition to this budget system. Got some stuff used or open box, and into the whole thing for like $500 with the Ultra!
I'm using my Ultra with an Emotiva BasX A2 which I picked up on a clearance deal for £370 and its bloody awesome. Almost killed my 22yr old B&W DM601S3's when I accidentally turned on the Fixed Volume Output. 160 Watts @ 100% volume. Yeah. Grills got launched off the front by the drivers trying to rip themselves out of the housing. Managed to turn the amp off within a few seconds. Thankfully no harm done. Lesson learned!!
@johnloupis9344 nice! I recommend the following... In Audio Inputs turn the input gain all the way down and in Audio Settings put the volume limit to 90%. This will let you use a wider range on the volume. With everything on default once the volume reached 30 it was crazy loud. After those tweaks 30-40 is my normal level and 60 is where its absolutely rocking.
Just ordered the Ultra. Been looking for a good streamer for a while that doesn't cost a house payment or two to get. A friend got the Ultra a few weeks back based on your recommendation and it's an outstanding piece of gear for the money. Even with the on-board DAC, it sounds fantastic. Keep up the good work good sir.
Ordered yesterday morning, was waiting for me when I got home from work. Running it through my Aleph J into some BR03s...sweet! Will probably add in my Mani 2 for the phono stage.
Snagged an Ultra on sale to replace my Wiim Mini feeding a Geshelli J2, figured I'd try the Ultra's internal DAC first, it took me about 10 minutes to put the J2 back in the chain particularly after my wife said it sounded tinny, I thought it was flat and lifeless compared to the J2, just goes to show the J2 is the real deal. I mainly bought the Ultra for the room correction which I'm happy to say works great, now it's time to get a SMSL PO100 "reclocker" to see what all the fuss is about.
Bought it in August in UK £349, went on sale December £279, bummer for me. Mine developed a problem with the touchscreen late November, where it would flicker rapidly when playing any music, couldn't turn screen off either in the settings, after a few emails back and forward with Wiim Customer Support, they sent me a replacement, fingers crossed for this one. I asked about a possible feature I would be interested in on a future update, where you could directly select tracks on a connected USB drive, without using the Wiim App, and they said it would be a thing!
Just bought one! Can’t wait to hook it up tomorrow, through a Schiit Modi 3E. (I have a SU-1 too, to compare). Thinking an Emotiva A2 will be a great budget option (currently at 20% off) and be able to run nearly any speaker out now (Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52 and Kef Q Meta Concerto are on the list!) Thanks for the great content, and frequent uploads, Randy!
Currently running the Pioneer BS-22LR speakers (Andrew Jones design), Jamo C910 sub, and the Sony STR-DH190. Can’t wait for some EQ, HDMI ARC, and bass management to dial it all in, and simplify to 1 remote.
I'm very pleased with the WiiM ultra, I love the EQ and app functions and it sounds good. The space grey and silver look similar in colour, I ordered the space grey and was expecting a dark grey almost black as seen on Amazon site but it looks like silver to me. Great product.
They could lower the cost even more without the touch screen - If I can access the whole thing from my phone why would I ever need to touch it? Just leave it as a display screen for the visual aspect.
There’s a valid reason. Sometimes you’re moving around the house tidying up or whatever and it’s faster to just walk up and press next song than find my tablet, unlock the screen (keep it passworded) and change the song. I doubt losing the touch aspect would shave any significant cost off.
I bought the Pro Plus for $175 since I don't need most of those connections, besides they're useless because it needs the clock corrector and a separate DAC.
@@naastradamus Just get an optical to usb adapter then the clock corrector for you mini. Buying the Ultra just to spend an extra couple hundred to fix it is pointless.
@@JohnKelly2 Would the re-clocking device be hamstrung in any way by the Optical conversion? Specifically, would there be less ability to go back to the source to get data vs. a straight USB connection? If there's some "talking" back and forth required, I'm guessing that USB would possibly be better for that. But I'm just speculating.
This ultra vs WiiM mini optical to a nice dac probably isn’t gonna change much. I have a mini going to the topping dx3 pro plus whatever it is called, just using it for its streaming capabilities. On WiiM website you can compare all the streamers side by side but if it’s doing optical I’m not sure there’s a difference
If I am not mistaken the WiiM's DAC gets bypassed if you connect it digitally to an external DAC. So there should be no difference in sound whatsoever since the DAC inside the Topping E50 does all the work.
Well this is hilarious, this video popped up for me and it started in Japanese, thought Randy was doing a bit, but for whatever reason the Engilsh audio version isn't an option for me
This happened to me too and I had to reboot my TV. I had English on my phone watching the video but not on my TV for some reason. TV is a Sony Bravia 4k.

This one plus the 2 topping mono blocks and you are ready Oh and speakers? I guess the Wharfedales? Or the Polks R8 they get very good reviews and look gorgeous
Something to keep in mind is when prices are given in the US it's without VAT so for example in Ireland it's 399 EUR but without VAT it's it's 325 EUR which is about 340 dollars.
I have one coming in tomorrow . . . I plan to use the USB out to a DDC that will split between Optical & Coaxial. The Optical will go to an amp with Bass Management so I'll turn off the WiiM bass manager for that. I''ll turn on the Wiim Base Management for the Coaxial & Line outs as those are going to use a manually adjustable sub that will be directly connected to the Wiim. (Aiwa TS-CD20) When the dust settles, the Wiim will be shared between 3 separate systems using 3 different DACs . . 1 AKM, 1 ESS, and a Analog Devices AD1955. 🙂
@@IainMacUK Hi. 🙂 It took Amazon until Yesterday to deliver the Ultra. 🤬I hooked it up and tested it today using the USB out to A DDC as well as using the LINE OUT. Seeing that the SMSL PO-100 wasn't available, I used the Douk Audio U2 XMOS XU208 Digital Interface DDC between the Wiim Ultra USB Out and my Emotiva TA-2 Optical input. Even though the Sub Out was active in my Wiim Home App, no sub signal was sent to the secondary sub when using the USB out. I read that WiiM is aware of this and will fix in future firmware releases for the Ultra. The TA-2 comes with Bass Management & has its own dedicated sub so no issue there. The DDC coaxial output went to a Schiit Modi 3+ DAC then to my STA-95 . . . no bass management but excellent sound nevertheless. 😎🔊 Interesting finding here . . . the Douk Audio U2 will drive both the Optical & Coaxial output simultaneously! 😮👍🏽
Interesting. But with some much streaming options from phone or computer, I am scratching my head about the extra box. Spotify etc can go right from your phone or computer to your speakers.
On my smart TV, you were speaking anything but English. I thought it was a joke, but this was not reflected in the comments. Long time subscriber. Thanks for your hard work.
Well because of your great advocacy I now own every model of Wiim made. Thx! I was shocked at how heavy the box was. This ain't no tiny plastic streamer! Screen is larger than I expected and I think I'd rather own two or three of these than an eversolo or hifi rose streamer. Those units are beautiful but just like cars the purpose is to get from point a to b.

Thanks for your reviews on this. After watching about a Brazillion reviews I pulled the trigger on an early Black Friday sale from Amazon which came to about 400 CAD all in. I’ve been using the WiiM Mini with a Cambridge DAC Magic Azure for a few years and thought it was time for an upgrade. Am currently running a McIntosh MC7270 and a Decware preamp but I thought I would try the Ultra as a standalone streamer, preamp and DAC to see how it sounds and out of the box it was incredibly… underwhelming. But I kept reminding myself it was 400 bucks so I left it in the chain. After running the WiiM room correction twice, I think I’ve got it sounding quite nice. The soundstage is very far back which I don’t love but I’m hoping that trying an external DAC and possibly that little SMSL reclocker might help with that. All in all, I think it comes down to trying to strike the right balance between sound quality and convenience and for me, SQ always comes first. That being said, I’m hoping I can get squeeze every last drop of juice out of this thing sound wise because the convenience factor is unbeatable for the price. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Re external power supply. The goal of an external power supply is to reduce electrical noise that bleeds into other circuits thereby degrading the sound quality. With all the stuff wedged into the WiiM, I kind of doubt an external power supply's noise reduction will have much, if any, effect.
I've been sitting on the fence for a while now between this Wiim or the CA MXN10. My 2 channel system is a bottom line CA Amp and CD player so the MXN10 would be the best choice. But at this price point on the Amazon Black Friday sale at $367 here in Canada I ordered one after watching this video.
I wish I’d seen this video earlier. That was a really nice discount. I’ve subscribed again that should help in the future. I have the mini and it’s much better with the external DAC I use. I’m wondering if the Ultra has the ability to send the phono or other analog inputs as digital outputs (ADC)?
Just purchased the Wiim ultra, SMSL PO100, and a SMSL SU-1 DAC & I have the Emotiva Basx A2m amp per your recommendation what would be a good set of speakers for this setup? Budget friendly for this music lover?
Whats your budget for speakers? Lots of options : Sony SCS5s, Elac Debut 3.0, etc. Do consider a sub it changed the game for me , for 299 usd the RSL 10e can’t be beat plus it’s an awesome company regarding customer support:
Can I run my PC via USB to the WiiM Ultra and then to my receiver via RCA? I would appreciate any input on this! I would be using Ethernet hard wired! I watch TH-cam videos and streaming services via my PC so not sure I have need to connect PC or if using the Ultra would bypass needing to connecting PC.
Since my comment got taken down explaining how to use a USB splitter so you may use the USB input and output simultaneously. You should do a video on it. Readers will be appreciated 😊.
I would be sort of interested, just one question, it has HDMI ARC in, but not out ? Or is this HDMI out only would make more sense? Oh by the way, WiiM has also it's own power amplifier ... PS: oh wow room correction through app that is really cool !!
Admittedly, I’m entering the curmudgeon stage of life and have no clue what this box does. My very good friend has two of them and he says, “I can’t believe you don’t have a WIIM box.”
Yeah most reviewers do this. The brands want this because they don’t want you to realize that it either won’t work, won’t help, or has limited usefulness. He’s a good salesman tho.
It allows you to pay some internet company a couple hundred per year and then listen to pop and rock music over the internet. Classical not so much generally. This is good because instead of putting in a cd or record, you can sit on your ass and pick your next song moving only your finger. So your legs will go and you'll die younger and cheaper, saving Medicare (the prepaid "free" Healthcare) thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I am three weeks late to the party and the prices mentioned in this video are but a fleeting memory. So sad...sniff...its oK...I will be ok....thanls for the video. I have subbed your channel.
Sadly ... $446 here in the UK (£349) ... it's quite often the case that audio stuff here costs the same 'number' of £GBP's in the UK as it does $USD in the US ... we just keep getting ripped off!!! .. but, thanks for a great video, entertaining and informative, ignore the people that winge, should do this, shoud do that .... just keep doing what you're doing :)
I put a Iancanada power supply on the Pro, immediate audible benefit😊 Think it cleaned the Shhhh(JITTER) up? I don’t know, but it sounded not immistakeably cleaner on top. Have a golden day brother❤
I would be interested to know if there's some truth to this idea. Linear PSU effect on jitter. Seems like it would be totally separate, but the audible effects I've heard from using linear PSU seems to match what others describe hearing when they use re-clocker devices. Or, maybe those audible effects are similar because in the end, they're both "cleaning up" the signal, but in different ways.
@@naastradamus The better the power supply to anything seems to be the Golden Fleece in this hobby. And then you have your variable quality of incoming power across the country that doesn’t help matters. So I guess the old saying “your mileage may vary” applies😊
You’ll just log into your Amazon music account and it will pull all of your stuff over and then you’d use your phone or tablet to navigate things from the Wiim amp
Watching the video and you just gave me a light bulb moment. We all have old cinema receivers in the attic that. I must have 3 or 4 wasn't worth the hassle of selling on as didn't have hdmi Could just add this and use them just for amplification. Amazing thank you.
Was considering this, mostly use the phono, but occasionally stream Bluetooth from my phone to the stereo. Question is, can i sent from my phone to it, and will it improve the sound from phone bluetooth?
If you use the DAC in your Wiim then yes. If you benefit from HDMI ARC, then 100%. If you like the screen again, easy yes. There are also other contributing factors from other features, but those were the highlights for me.
I want just streamer transport with airplay 2 as I have several good DACs at home.. If someone insists on integrated DAC within streamer, well then I would expect balanced output.
@@dinglebarrybonds as far as I know, there is newer amp called PRO without airplay 2. They are ridiculous - Ifi, Cambridge, Buesound, etc, everybody have it

4:00 - for that exact reason is why I simplified my setup and just got a pair KEF LSX II connected to my TV via HDMI ARC, with a sub. Easy peasy.
Mine arrived this afternoon! Outputting via USB to a Dragonfly USB DAC. Sounds great.
The Wiim Ultra has a DAC that sounds significantly better than the DAC in the Pro+. So if you are using the onboard DAC that's a reason to upgrade.
As stated in the first response, the Ultra actually has the superior chip, the ES9038 Q2M SABRE DAC.
No human can distinguish between the two DACs, that's how good the DACs are between these two streamers.
@@menageartois Why did they upgrade the DAC it if no one can hear the difference?
@ Outstanding! I’m excited for you to get this, as I know how much I love getting good new gear. Enjoy!
2 minutes in.....still have no idea what it is or why it's so good.
It's mind boggling.
I Just got a Basx-A3 a month ago. Get the Ultra tomorrow. Think I better remember that!
@@drichcymru After 12 days have gone by I have just read this. That's exactly where I have the limit set! Thanks for the confirmation!
Thanks! Enjoy. It’s a ton of fun
I've been waiting for this to go on sale! Thank you for letting us know. I just placed my order at Crutchfield.
Ordered yesterday morning, was waiting for me when I got home from work. Running it through my Aleph J into some BR03s...sweet! Will probably add in my Mani 2 for the phono stage.
Added in my Klipsch R-100SW and ran room correction. Sounds pretty amazing for $263!
Congrats on the new car Randy! Great taste.
Monoprice is on it today - just increased the price to $299 as I was looking at the amp-
@@SteadmanShorts that SUCKS! I was legit going to make a vid about it tomorrow morning.
@cheapaudioman well the good news/ silver lining is that they probably saw a jump in traffic to that page because of your video! kudos my friend
Yup, 201$ price was there and now gone…some sale… Not spending money there, wonder how the after sale service follows the same model.
I don't get it. Can you help me understand? Why use this instead of just wifi powered speakers controlled/streaming from phone?
@@kittykittygumdrops because of software. I have the WiiM pro and I can say that the software is awesome and it just works every time.
The only reason I'd consider the Ultra is to try the re-clocker tinkering. With the mini or pro, you don't have the option. (I have the mini).
@@naastradamus Just get an optical to usb adapter then the clock corrector for you mini. Buying the Ultra just to spend an extra couple hundred to fix it is pointless.
@@JohnKelly2 Cool, I didn't know this was an option. Definitely introduces more in the chain though. But worth a try if it's cheap.
Just ordered one. Glad I waited for black Friday sales!
Same!
Got mine for $80 after applying for a credit card affiliated with Amazon. Didn't really need another credit card, but I did need a Wiim Ultra...
Great price, but is there any sonic upgrade over a Wiim Mini into a Topping E50? I don't really need the functionality.
IMO, I would say No.
@@tedkay5272 I appreciate this answer to my very similar question
This ultra vs WiiM mini optical to a nice dac probably isn’t gonna change much. I have a mini going to the topping dx3 pro plus whatever it is called, just using it for its streaming capabilities. On WiiM website you can compare all the streamers side by side but if it’s doing optical I’m not sure there’s a difference
If I am not mistaken the WiiM's DAC gets bypassed if you connect it digitally to an external DAC. So there should be no difference in sound whatsoever since the DAC inside the Topping E50 does all the work.
The mini is perfect with an external DAC, just missing the room EQ correction...

How about the WiiM Pro Plus AirPlay 2 Receiver, which is available for 175.20 at Amazon? Is it worth the plunge instead of the WiiM Ultra?
I just knew that this had to go on sale...glad I waited.....just ordered!
If you have a sub don't use an external USB DAC. Currently no base management with that option.
@edricjr7930
Let me know the result! :-)
@@IainMacUK - Will do! 🙂👍🏽
@@edricjr7930 thanks for the feedback
Interesting. But with some much streaming options from phone or computer, I am scratching my head about the extra box. Spotify etc can go right from your phone or computer to your speakers.
The DAC inside for better fidelity phones and laptops etc have horrible DAC abilities.
@ ….right to a powerful Blue tooth speaker. My speaker needs no daq and sounds great.
It’s even on sale at Amazon Canada!
Add another $50ish for the Aussie tax and it less impressive , also most shops artificially raise their prices before any big sale.
Not on sale here in the UK....and we already get charged more for it.

Hi. In Amazon Spain the price remains still at 399€. You're lucky. Thanks for your videos!
Re external power supply. The goal of an external power supply is to reduce electrical noise that bleeds into other circuits thereby degrading the sound quality. With all the stuff wedged into the WiiM, I kind of doubt an external power supply's noise reduction will have much, if any, effect.
Can you tell me what the product does? That would be the first thing I want to know.

Same here! How and where would I use it with existing Yamaha AVR?
Yeah most reviewers do this. The brands want this because they don’t want you to realize that it either won’t work, won’t help, or has limited usefulness. He’s a good salesman tho.
How about hooking it up to a vintage Yamaha cr2020 receiver 1969?
Would it work?
It allows you to pay some internet company a couple hundred per year and then listen to pop and rock music over the internet. Classical not so much generally. This is good because instead of putting in a cd or record, you can sit on your ass and pick your next song moving only your finger.
