This channel is truly magical. I just watched a 15 minute video about big corporations doing taxes, and I was entertained the whole way through. This community is incredible.
So, the question is: "Why do franchisees agree to these terms so frequently?" Well, running a restaurant is very difficult, and the vast majority run on slim to no margins. Brand name alone helps to improve your chances. But also McDonald's does a large part of the work for you. At least as far as planning goes. You get to run your business in an area the franchise has deemed optimal...and they probably know more about that than you do, considering collective experience. You are also given your menus, which means you know what you are going to make, and how you should make them. This standardization also helps to get customers, due to them knowing what they can get, regardless of the McDonald's. Being a Franchisee is basically the entry level job of starting a business. It shows you the ropes, and guides you through many of your responsibilities.
There's also a bit of a fail-safe in that if your franchise location is unsuccessful for one reason or another, the franchiser will get you closed down and sold back before you're knee deep in debt. Or if, god forbid, some mob decides to burn down your Wendy's, you'll probably have the building insured through the franchiser.

Food Theory is wrong by that i mean their calculation for taxes are wron. Even if you make loss in year 1 you can claim that loss in next year to set off your profits i.e. if you make 50,000$ at the end of year 1 it will be setteled with the earnings from Year 2 which is again 50,000$ so at the end of year 2 you will show IRS that you have not made any profit so you are not laible to pay any taxes in 2nd year also but from 3rd year there are no losses and so you have to pay taxes which will end up $31,500 even without depreciation. The real reason is not that they will save taxes but is something known as "Discounted CashFlow". DCF is why any business shows Depriciation rather than claming all costs at year 1.
Hey, accountant here. I really enjoy your videos but there is a couple of things I want to point out, although I am not a tax specialist. The first is that companies prefer using bonus depreciation, which allows them to use 100% tax depreciation in the first year rather then what you said about a preference to straight-line over the life of the asset. This is so companies can have their tax benefit immediately rather then in the future. Then that goes into the whole idea of present value of money but I will gloss over that for now. Also, your point about going over your income in the first year is incorrect. There is the concept of deferred tax assets that will carry-over losses for future years, so that tax benefit is never lost.
From a CPA, IAgreed. He really messed up that whole part of the video. The IRS REQUIRES companies to use depreciation over the life of the property and allows for exception to deduct it all immediately like the business really wants to. In his example, if they were allowed to deduct it all immediately, they would show a $50,000 loss in year 1 and then in year 2 show a $50,000 profit, but would be a to deduct the previous years Net Operating Loss and would show $0 profit for year 2 as well. They would then pay tax on $50,000 in years 3, 4, and 5 like he said and like you said companies will defer that tax bill as long as possible because they would rather have the money now than later.
DING DING DING. Tax specialist here. you nailed it. It is interesting how little people understand how taxes work. Even then, doing some research about a tax topic will not yield useful information unless you understand the basics of the specific area you are researching. In short, there is a reason CPA firms earn what they do. Taringator and Brian B nailed it on the head here, guys.
I came to the comment section looking for this comment. As a Accounting student I knew he got a lot of facts wrong, but I knew I didn't know enough to do the subject justice. Thanks for helping me understand what he was wrong about.
Former CPA here... a-yup. Tax law is incredibly complex and always changing. If MattPat had actually done all the necessary research in to taxes, land, depreciation, etc - he could have passed that section of the cpa exam! Ie, it’s a LOT to take in.
Very informative. Thank you, Matt. Wish rich companies didn't have these sort of bs tax loopholes when individual people trying to make ends meet have no access to this kind of thing.
Well actually in other branch including us, we do not really prefer to say, "Welcome to McDonald's" because you know, you're already in the McDonald's why would the crew need to tell you that?

I'm glad to have known the crazy fact about McDonalds being more of a real estate company than a restaurant a couple of years back because of the film 'The Founder'. @Buttercup Ghost Maybe it's a Pacific Northwest thing. I've never left the Pacific Northwest, and every state I've been in has had dragonfruit in the major grocery stores.
Technically restaurants themselves are "owned" by "independent" contractor. So you actually don't work for McDonald, just in McDonald restaurant. Also it isn't a theory. McDonald officially is a real estate company.
@@maddogerios This pops up as a notification for me, I check, and see that it's gone up twenty since you posted that. It's amazing how popular the idea of a conspiracy theory channel is. Take a hint, MatPat.
"I think MatPat had too much fast food and all the salt dried his brain". People say this theory is far fetched....but be honest, what MatPat theory ISN'T farfetched? Isn't that one of the reasons why we like them?
But this one isnt farfetched, its simply a fact. If their earnings from real estate exceed their food earnings then they are absolutely primarily a real estate agency regardless of how they want the public sphere to recognize them.
I know i’m seeing this video a little late but I think when matpat was calculating the tax for “burger bot 2000” he made a small discrepancy that actually means they are the same amount of tax. When he was calculating it for the second year with no depreciation it went from -50,000 from the first year to +50,000 even though in the second year you only made 50,000 when it should have leveled out to zero with this you would takeoff 10,500 of the total making it equal to the amount you would make from separating the costs. Love the theories keep it up.

I often talk to my family about stuff, then find it on my recommended vids or in Tumblr ads. Even having gone through all the available steps to disable my phone's smart assistant, and denying mic/camera access to any app that doesn't need it, it is essentially still spying on me to target advertising at me. These days there are so many smart devices around that privacy isn't really a thing any more.
This was probably my favorite theory episode. I know this was all about how Mcdonald's isn't a restaurant but I started a 3D printing business this year and my goodness this was incredibly helpful just to hear and watch. I played through it a few times to try and make it stick. Some people may see these business practices as sleezy but really the government is kind of trash so it's just all about how you play the game. Matpat, this was so useful for me to watch. I really feel like the stuff outlined here can benefit my business greatly. I've been worried about taxes since I just started this business of mine but I feel like I can make it through. Thank you Matpat and all his editors for making this visually pleasing and incredibly informative. Also, I kinda want the fourth theory channel to be a business theory channel now
Johnny Harris has a video on why the McDonalds ice cream machines are always broken, and it has a lot to do with the fact that these stores are individual franchises. Would love to see MatPat's take on it.
Some times I look at these titles and I wonder two things: Is this even real? How is he going to pull this theory off? Yet MatPat surprises me EVREY TIME

Taringator and Brian B nailed it on the head here, guys.
lol I have nothing to add, but I'm amused at how many CPAs watch this channel and since I am one too I wanted to pile on.

Yep
