the ANNIE cast album was playing on the living room stereo a lot when we were kids and even back then my sisters and I recognized how bright and strong Janine Ruane’s vocals were in the Smile number. It wasn’t a fluke because you can hear it on the Tony awards performance as well. Talented girl.
My daughter and I just watched Seth deconstruct songs from Annie. What an entertaining way to educate us about this classic and nostalgic piece. We were both cracking up but also taking notes on the art of vibrato musical theater-style.
First of all the "Star to be" was my audition song forever.! Then I met Laurie and she told me I looked like her sister.. Random I know, but it was an amazing moment. I was offered Grace Farrell in a production of Annie, and turned it down because I wanted to do all the Laurie Beechman parts. yes, true story. So they gave me Star to be, and I understudied Grace.
OMG! I'm obsessed too!! Laurie Beechman's parts have been my absolute favorites since I first heard that album back in 1977. Thanks for doing what you do Seth! Love it.

I was in a school production that split "star to be" into 3 girls, all carrying little suitcases, and we had to change the line on opening night to 3 bags, 2 bucks, 1 me to make sense with the props. Even split into 3 it was a really nice part, and I got to sing the E.
I'm so fond of this video, it made me obsessed with the star-to-be solo in N.Y.C. --- I've learned the easiest way to find this song on Spotify is to type "N.Y.C" since there's a mini type forgetting the final period in the song title
I recently played Star-To-Be with a community theatre in my city and I wanted to do what Laurie Beechman did when she went up on “to N Y C ee” while the chorus went down on the “ooohs” but the music was written the opposite so I had to go down on that part while the chorus went up. Still such a fun solo to sing and I was happy I got to add some of my own flair to it.
WOW! Seth. I never realized that THIS was the album (while as a kid) I used to learn how to turn on and off or accentuate my vibrato - during the EXACT segments you are highlighting. I wasn't a fan of the musical - but LOVE the soundtrack. (Used to blast it when my folks were out. The poor neighbors. Bet they thought I would be blasting rock or metal. NOPE, I blasted Broadway. In short segments. OVER AND OVER. hahahhaha) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE!!
This simple idea was probably one of the hardest shows to put together for the stage. The songs and the book are perfect. I saw the original, it was GREAT.
Judy Garland belted Ds on multiple occasions, and in one song shortly belted an E flat, but thats pretty much it before Barbra came along in Funny Girl.

It's Seth talking and talking and talking while playing - and replaying - the same few notes repeatedly. This is my first and last attempt to watch one of Seth's "performances." Unbelievably annoying.
