I was actually wondering where all these magnificent photos came from of Cooranbong.......until I saw the end credits and saw that my auntie Jenny Hill was the contributor! Like, wow!
Great Producton but you didn't mention the bushranger Dave (the jew boy) Smith he ranged around the area. He held up an American settler in Newport (Cooranbong) as well as the Rev Tinkfield (twice) that ran the aboriginal mission in Toronto where Toronto pub is now and in one day held up 6 bullock drays at Branxston toll gates he held the drivers in the Branxston inn and made them drink while he loaded up pack horses. His Mother fenced the stolen goods out of a 3 story general store she owned with a sly grog shop on the second floor and her daughters working on the top floor in Newcastle the great northern hotel stands on the site now. When Dave bolted from the convict barracks in Sydney he crossed Dora Creek on a ferry hawled by other convicts they cut the ropes to slow down the traps. Dave was shot near Swansea heads as he was loading a pack horse to go see his Mum. I got this info from a book called A Orginised Banditry its a good read.
Thank you Heather for accessing many archival records and stories to bring this interesting and informative account of Cooranbong together. Well Done.
