Now that the sale of our beloved club has been approved by FIFA and the UK government, I’m excited to see a return to normality for everyone associated with the club, from the back-room and ground staff all the way up to the managers and players. I have high hopes for increased funding for the academy, the women’s teams and the youth squads, in addition to the Premiership guys. Firstly though, I am anxious to see the UK government immediately step-back from the front-seat position it inserted itself into a couple of months ago regarding the operation of our club. I am glad that they were clear that sanctions were justified against Russian oligarchs and I fully accept that that included the owner of our club. However, it cannot be denied they CFC and all its staff became a proxy whipping-boy for everyone who dislikes Chelsea or who supports another team/sport. The number of people calling for the immediate dissolving of the club as punishment for our history under RA, the levying of multiple-tier drops out of the FA, etc stung a lot and were clearly cheap-shots motivated by jealousy/hostility rather than a true sense of sporting fair-play. Thanks to repeated news stories and press releases issues by the government, the final months of the premiership season were overshadowed by messages of censure and multiple trips for our team to the sporting naughty step. CFC was the perfect high-profile target for the world’s collective disgust at the disgraceful behaviour of Russia in Ukraine. It hurt to read stories on the BBC of the “special licenses” granted to our team, as if our players and staff were on some kind of probation for their previous bad behaviour. Here’s hoping that the government loudly and clearly disentangles itself from our club, leaving us to move on from a difficult few months, find our feet under new ownership and begin building for the 22/23 season. Well done everyone for achieving so much this season, in spite of the challenges thrown your way.
