Hi Dave! Personally speaking, there are times after a long day at work that I would like to wind down and watch a long plant video. There are other times that I opt for a 20 min. video. But I definitely prefer to curl up on my couch with my dog and watch a YT plant video rather than some of the garbage on network tv. My husband already knows watching a plant video, repotting a couple of plants or just checking on my collection helps me wind down. Even mixing my soil components in my storage bins is relaxing to me. He’s very supportive and I appreciate that from him. I started giving some plants to friends and coworkers because my collection kinda exploded this year. I still need to downsize more. I am really consumed with Hoyas at the moment, I don’t know how I resisted for so many years! The blooms got me! African Violets used to be my thing at the beginning of my plant journey and that was about 30ish years ago. Yikes I’m aging myself! I did step away for a long time and my daughter showed interest while she was at college so that’s how I got back in. Anyway, I hope you have a blessed Christmas! Oh btw, I get a lot of supplies from the $1.25 store. You just have to think outside the box. I love to have several of those white bins people used to keep dishes in to wash. I dump my soil in there and I use another for dirty pots that need to get washed. You can find a lot of uses. ☺️ I don’t have a lot of luck thrifting for plant pots or cover pots. Estate sales…at times. Garage sales, almost never.
I, too, like and make some long videos, but there are definitely topics that I think 15 minutes would cover it--but with a small channel, I've had some of those pay a total so far of: under $10. The amount of time, setup, filming, editing, posting, etc. That's like working for $2/hours. That was my only point on that. I love the $1.25 store! As long as you know how to see if you're getting a good deal, or if you're only buying one foot of aluminum foil 🤣 Merry Christmas to you as well, an cheers from Iowa City 😊

I feel the same way. My plant life is solitary. No one that I know that comes in ever mentions my plants. Maybe they don’t know what to ask me but I really feel the disinterest. But a positive comment would be appreciated.
@@lisaanglim9588 Lisa, I have a funny story. A friend of mine starting coming over every Friday for old dude chats. Weeks went by, and I figured he just didn't care/notice my plants, since he'd never said one word. Then one day as we stood to leave he said, "How do you do this" and waved his hands around the room. Then he clarified, "Grow plants so nice. I made some off-handed comment about I just pay attention, but he was actually serious. I couldn't believe it, after all those weeks of ... nothing 😆
My first plant was an orchid. I got it in 2021 and the blooms died off so I started watching a TH-cam Chanel and got it to bloom the next year and from there I have bought so many.
This sounds like my plant care journey! I watched Orchid Girl and obsessed over a grocery store orchid. She is, sadly, no longer with us. The sacrificial lamb… 🐑 🤗
I definitely plan to have a variety orchids whose blooms span roughly the four seasons here in Iowa. Which might be tricky considering those summer bloomers look to be warmer weather lovers.
I am definitely enjoying your videos. I have the seedling tray version of those pots and had to get rid of them as well. I will be looking out for your patreon group. I'm looking forward to buying plants as well. Again, thank you so much for making the videos.
I for one watch every single one of your videos and will absolutely sign up for your Patreon once live! I'm also so grateful you started your channel - I learn something on every single video you put out. Thank you so much for your awesome personality and content. Wishing you and your household a wonderful Christmas. Here's to an amazing 2025 🎉
Thank you so much! I hope my reply isn't a duplicate, but I am missing a bunch of responses I've already left ... so ... Thanks so much for all the support you've shown through watching and commenting. I really enjoy it 😊
I CANNOT be on YT for hour long videos. I have things to do! I appreciate the length of your videos. Your channel is the perfect fit for me. I so appreciate you!
@@lisaanglim9588 I do like long videos, and in some ways, it's easier to make them, believe it or not. But sometimes, they just need to be short, right??
I'm equally thankful for coming across your channel. I learned a lot from your content. Thank you for all the work you have put into this channel. Happy holidays to you and your wife!!!
Lasagna pans!!! So here’s the situation. Your wife is like me. I’m passionate about cooking. For example, I will wake up sometimes and I am like, I’m going to cook something. I search and search for the instant pot insert pot. where the hell is it? Then I turn around and unbeknownst to me, it was used for a planty thing and now dirty on the kitchen table. While I feel helpless, I can appreciate her desire to ensure that all of her plants are alive and well. Like her, the plants are always beautiful. Great work my friend, as always.
Somehow I missed the talk about patreon. I’ll join your account. I like your quiet energy that you exposes when you film and speak. I know I can relax while watching you after I watch some political videos on TH-cam
I’ve not missed a video! I just got into plants this year and your channel was very refreshing to find. Thanks for all the work you’ve put in and looking forward to another year of great videos and seeing your channel grow. Merry Christmas!
I picked up Hoya Kerri, laid her gently on the chopping board and said Kerri, I must complete an amputation of your lower half. Kerri quivered and shook frantically, well actually it was my hands, then I laid her amputated bottom to rest -- in the trash, she caused me such aggravation! Hoya Kerri with the addition of mycorrhizae is coming along fine. Hoyas Bhutanica and Chicken farm are on their way to healing. I feel like a surgeon trying to save my plants! I hope 2025 will bring forth new birth. Ok now I sound like an obstetrician! Looking forward to a better plant year, purchase some hoyas on my wish list and move on to trying African violets and orchids again. Thanks for being a fab TH-camr Dave! 💚 Dee, NY
😂 Hilarious! My Chicken Farm is off to.... someplace better 😏 bhutanica was patient zero, or one, with root mealies. Oh if I couldn't do that over again. Here's to a great 2025, no matter what !!
Lovely bloom! I love B. nodosa and its hybrids. They're so fun. I'm so glad I found your channel Dave. I watch every single one of your videos. Thank you so much for making them.
Hi Dave😌🙌Wow! Beautiful Brassovola nodosa🥰👏Mine hasn't budded yet, it's on a mount I attached it to last Summer. Those horrible pots certainly stalled the Hoya's root growth. They will bounce right back now they're in terracotta😃🙏Another easy to grow orchid is Coelogyne intermedia. It loves plenty of water and ample light with lots of humidity in Summer. I enjoyed watching🤲🌟
Thanks, Newman! I'm going to to check out that orchid in no time flat. I don't think there's been a time in my life where I was actually aware of how little I know about a subject 🤣 Now *that's* personal growth 😆
Thank you for these great videos! I have learned a lot. You are so kind and funny that the videos feel like seeing a friend. I will def sign up for patreon to be able to see you even more. You are a bright light in my rather dim world. Thank you!
I LOVE your videos!!!!! I’m new here and have been bingeing through your library! I have learned so much from you and love your sense of humor with everything you are teaching us. Thank you so much!!!! Enjoy your holidays!!!! 😊
Good luck with restarts. I spray my terracotta pots on the outside, especially late spring and summer. Seems to work. Finally, your channel success is due to your humble attitude toward plants and content. Not having a whole lot of money I can relate to your chat and advise. Best wishes for Christmas and the new year Dave. Keep safe and hope 2025 is a year of great plant growth. GOD JUL OCH GOTT NYTT ÅR🎄🥂5
Love your plant chats and your sharing of your knowledge and experience with us fellow plant nerds. 😊 Merry Christmas to you and your wife Dave! You’re a delight! 🌺🌿💚
I am so happy you started your channel. I really enjoy all the information you share and I have learned a lot. I have tried your substrate mix on some of my Hoya and they love it. I enjoy your honesty the most. Keep making these great videos.
I had that orchid when I lived in Florida ❤ I am wondering why mold grows in those pots and not other plastic pots. And yes 15 - 20 minutes is optimal for a video. When I see videos of about 45 minutes I move on.
Must be the silicone? In my original video, sooo many people commented about having the same experience. Ugh. As for the orchid, can you tell I'm quite pleased with it? 🤣😂🤣
thanks Dave for all you bring to this channel i learn other ways to do things and incorperate them into my repertoire happy holidays to you and your family
In the living room, where most of the plants are during the winter (tent excluded), the day temp varies on the cloud cover. But, 58-60 overnight. 64-70 daytime (and 70 is on a good day 😆). Humidity with humdifiers running is in the mid 30s to low 40s, unless we're having a "warm" very moist day outside. I recently posted a pic of my humidity sitting at 12 percent on the plant porch with supplemental IR heating 😖
I’m so proud of you for using that beat up pan instead of your wife lasagna pan! Now next time you have lasagna it won’t taste like dirt lol 😂 Merry Christmas Dave, and have a great new year! I really enjoy your channel.
Super stoked to hear you'll be launching a Patreon, and I will be immediately joining it. Thanks for another great video, I appreciate all of them (even the amaryllis one haha).
Hey, hey! Thanks so much. I think we'll have fun there, and if not, it's not a lifetime commitment! As for the video, and so happy that you and my wife enjoyed it 🤣😂🤣
I agree! Retirement is da BOMB! I'm having so much fun that half the time I forget about my medical appointments. Starting a small backyard houseplant nursery (Hoya and a few other Aroids)has been the biggest reason. Immersing myself in botanicals has led to l, what my friends call my own personal "Renaissance". 😂😂😂
Merry Christmas Dave! Thanks for all the great videos and advice and for sharing your story. I'm so glad I found your channel! I hope you and your family have a house full of love and joy this holiday season 🤗🌿💜🎄❄️😁 to Lexi : I rove rooo! 🐶🥰
My plant journey skyrocketed Spring 2019, and I've been watching plant tube since then. I don't watch anymore, bc you can only see so many hauls with the mouth hanging open & the inevitable endorsements. My main plant tubers are WildFern and you. I've learned a lot from you. I'm still trying to wrap my head around your vid saying I don't have to save them all... but how can I not as I look up at a weeping fig isolated and covered in scale ;)
"How do I not" is the lonely road we must all walk alone 🤣 All kidding aside, I'm flattered and amazed that I made your short list. Thank you so much for the support. It means the world.
Thanks Dave. I didn't know about these basalt and granite type pots. Did you get them at a store or online? Do you have a source you recommend? Happy New Year!
Dang it! I forgot to mention this (of course I did). The chains they can be purchased at are Flowerama and Earle May. My local nursery sells them, so you might have luck there. Mail order ... I've only found them wholesale, which seems seems really odd.
@@soberplantguy Thanks. I have 2 local garden centers that actually have these pots. I have a few. Didn't realize until I checked them just now that they are the Spang Germany pots. Yippee!
just wanted to say, i love your channel. of course i watch most of the OG's, and im a diehard for some of them--- but for a new channel, with a small following, i also really feel that you have a lot to offer and im happy to have found your content. my budget is small, but i hope i can factor in your patreon in the new year! merry christmas to you and yours 💚
Wow, thank you. High praise to be thrown in with the OGs 😁 I've added new, smaller channels, too. And I love them. Whether or not I see you on patreon, I'll look forward to seeing you the rest of this year, and into the next. Which is going to be amazing ... right??
Sorry, you had more plants effected by those pots. If it makes you feel any better, the girl with the hoya Midas touch (or however you put it awhile back) had a bad plant week too and threw out probably almost 100 seedlings and had to chop and prop at least 5 of my larger hoyas due to completely trashed roots. All due to my own doing though. Not anything like crummy pots sabotaging me. On the bright side, my Spartioides gave me my first seed pod and that popped a few days ago. However, it was one of the ones with crummy roots that I had to massacre so pretty sure it only gave me the pod because it was dying. So, there's that. Hopefully, next week is a better planty week for both of us and we can keep the scissors put away. LOL
❤❤ ,merci pour votre vidéo.Je ne me souviens plus si vous avez l’ hoya cummingiana ,si oui pouvez vous svp en parler .Bonne continuation. Bisous de la France.
I have mine in a plastic pot, and use a bit more coco coir. But I'm no expert on this one (or ... anything else in the world 😆). But I can confirm the general information that they really don't like to dry out. Cheers from Iowa City
It’s the best thing for your plant roots! Mycelium is what connects everything under ground. Tons of info on the internet. Your plants will thank you 😊
I won't watch a plant video an hour long..I have YT brain..I may click on it to fall asleep at night, I do that with Basie plants, he puts me to sleep 😂
I do think there's a place for them.... and I make them. But, sometimes nailing a 12 minute "how to" video is more worthwhile. I love to fall asleep to podcasters. They put in so much time and effort only to have someone like me be lulled to sleep 😆
Yahaha At the rate I am going I might be dead before I ever get monatized. Four years and bouncing between 297 and 300 subs.. I think this is my moment of reality. Give up while I am ahead. Hahaha I really was doing this for fun not a job. I am for real retired. I love those Basalt pots. They really look nice. I am so dry here I do successfully use plastic pots. For sure after your experience of those pots with the green bottoms I will be staying away from them.
@ Im not the one hiding them…. 😅 The message is typed… its sent… it appears at the video…. And then later sometimes I feel like I want to add something to it… and its gone.. Ok this one came through… Ill see how much I can retype from memory: Did you know which orchid it was when you got the seedling? Something about easy plants being more rewarding, nothing wrong with growing easier plants, I think we all should have more easy plants… (Though it can be rewarding to figure out what a finicky plant needs) In my downsizing journey I am starting to lean towards rehoming some of the more finicky Hoyas (maybe) What/which did you downsize? I love Hoya aff Lambii.. mine likes to make many vines and kill them off.. its currently growing leaves again so I am hoping it is happy now. The venation on it is so interesting! Will there be an update on the death-pot rescues? And maybe a short insert in another vid about how your Amaryllis flowers turned out? About vids: Im sometimes ok with the long ones But prefer the shorter more bite sized ones that don’t need to be paused Im currently happy to watch whatever you put out But mainly on TH-cam for Hoya content 🌸 Patreon: I like the idea of it… But Im also on the fence… Since its yet another “subscribtion” recurring expense.. Currently thinking about joining some… but also very hesitant 😊 And wishing you a wonderful day/week (Think that was most of it)
@Wubblyt Oddly enough, I left some responses to regulars (aka, I'd remember 🤣) and when I came to the video page, they weren't here. So it's both of us. I understand about not wanting to spend good money on patreon. I figured I'll offer it, and some people may be interested. Quite a few people email me to ask how they can further support the channel, so ... it's for them. My initial "purge" (though I hate that word, generally) was getting rid of most of the aroids I'd been influenced to buy. Then the moss poles except for two ... which is now one ... which will soon be zero. And then it was really a matter of deciding what actually brings me happiness to have, see, take care of. And a lot of those are pretty common. Plus, I've done that crazy thing of deciding to take an interest in orchids ... and making sure I have room for them. I know, I know. That's just wacky. And I like long videos. I just really think that there are interesting tutorial videos that are perfect at 12-15 minutes. But I've had some of those pay around ten bucks, total. For the life of the video. That's like working for $2/hr before taxes 🤣 It works for enormous channels, but that ain't me 😁 So for those who can justify a subscription, they'll be subsidizing those videos in a way. Okay, let's see if this goes through 😉
@@soberplantguy hahaha I strongly dislike all those words and how they are used… Purge/downsizing = sell plants to buy more plants Wishlist = checklist ( = we shall not be happy with what we have) Ah yes… the influenced to get plants and mosspole plants haha Makes total sense I am increasing my mosspoles to 4, not because I want more of them, but I use them to see if Ill like some of the plants that I already have better when they are less…… unruly… Currently Epipremnum skelleton key is on one to evolve its leaves more, Syngonium pink lady is one one for the same reason (how many lobes can it get?), a finicky Scindapsus silver splash that does well on a pole but not without (might rehome that one)…. And soon another Syngonium to see if a full pole of it will look nice in the living room 😅 But NO MORE! 🤣 Its sort of ok with those plastic backed ones and a cup like thing at the top Wow thats waaaaay not enough, they should be ashamed of themselves. During the lockdowns my husband made some 5 minute vids for fun… took about 4 hours to make one 😅 But that was just for fun I hope your responses will surface too someday
Honestly, i think youtubers sharing their wish list secretly hopping for gifts from their audience or swapping with them, but this is just my opinion 😁 for me the aff. Lambii (also called sp. kalimantan SLM004) is not necessary problematic rather than slow grower, lets say i may enjoy it less because its makes you kind of forget about it. when i inspect the plants I'm like there's no point of looking at her, because she doesn't grow anyway.. I also suspect she grows better outside. I dont know, i feel like some plants do very well inside but some just cant wait to go outside "back to nature"
Perhaps you're right 😂 As for my aff lambii, it has grown remarkably quickly. It was one of the last plants I added during summer, as a one node, two leaf cutting. Here's hoping I didn't set it back.......

Even in a house this large, one cannot be too careful.......
I am definitely enjoying your videos. I have the seedling tray version of those pots and had to get rid of them as well. I will be looking out for your patreon group. I'm looking forward to buying plants as well. Again, thank you so much for making the videos.
Yay! 🤗
Well, we are in good company on those dang pots. That's so kind of you to join patreon. I really think we'll have some fun!
I love watching your videos. I even watched the orchid rescue 😊. You enjoy growing plants and pass on that joy. Thank you ❤
Thank you so much! And especially for your support of my orchid video 🤣 Can't hit 'em all out of the park ....
Thank you for all you do for the plant community. Happiest of holidays. Pam
Pam! you WILL have an amazing holiday! 🤣 😚
Thank you, Pam! And you as well 😊
I for one watch every single one of your videos and will absolutely sign up for your Patreon once live!
I'm also so grateful you started your channel - I learn something on every single video you put out. Thank you so much for your awesome personality and content.
Wishing you and your household a wonderful Christmas. Here's to an amazing 2025 🎉
Ditto to all! Happy holidays to you!
Thank you so much! I hope my reply isn't a duplicate, but I am missing a bunch of responses I've already left ... so ...
Thanks so much for all the support you've shown through watching and commenting. I really enjoy it 😊
🎄Merry Christmas to you and your wife⛄️ Thanks for sharing your plants, being uniquely you, and the laughter🪴
You as well, Dee. I've so enjoyed our chats here 😊
I CANNOT be on YT for hour long videos. I have things to do! I appreciate the length of your videos. Your channel is the perfect fit for me. I so appreciate you!
💗
Right back at you! You've been such great support 😊
@@hanstera_deliciosa And you, too, OG 😉
Agreed. I enjoy the short length too. I listen to others that have long videos but I break them up into 30 minute viewings
You've been such great support--thank you so much 😊
Lasagna pans!!!
😭😭😭
She sounds fabulous. Can I be her friend??? 🤣
I mean this out of respect and love ... but this is your fault for waking up and feeling like cooking. I said what I said.
She does sound awesome !!
Thanks, Dave, and glad I found your channel. Looking forward to next year's videos!
🤗
Thank you, Shirley. Let's have a fabulous 2025!
I am always searching to see if you have posted a new video! Congrats Dave! You deserve it! We have snow and lots of it now in Madison!
Thank you, Kelsey! That truly means so much 😊
Somehow I missed the talk about patreon. I’ll join your account. I like your quiet energy that you exposes when you film and speak. I know I can relax while watching you after I watch some political videos on TH-cam
We ALL need to relax after political *anything* these days! I'd sure love to have you on patreon 😊
I’ve not missed a video! I just got into plants this year and your channel was very refreshing to find. Thanks for all the work you’ve put in and looking forward to another year of great videos and seeing your channel grow. Merry Christmas!
Even the early, uh, "less good" ones?? Thank you so much. You are what made it so rewarding to do this, right from the beginning 😊
Another great video Dave. At least those plants can be restarted. It will be fun to see their progress 😊
True, and they were cutting to begin with, so not like I lost a bunch of monster-sized plants 😁
Lol thank u Dave and to you and your wonderful wife as well!
Lovely bloom! I love B. nodosa and its hybrids. They're so fun.
I'm so glad I found your channel Dave. I watch every single one of your videos. Thank you so much for making them.
I appreciate you, and have really enjoyed all of your comments. Thanks so much for the support 😊
Thank you!
Wow, thank you so much. I cannot tell you (though I guess I tried 😅) how much comments like this mean. See you in 2025--or before!

Good luck with restarts. I spray my terracotta pots on the outside, especially late spring and summer. Seems to work.
Finally, your channel success is due to your humble attitude toward plants and content. Not having a whole lot of money I can relate to your chat and advise.

Thank you so much ! What a great Christmas Eve gift, even if you don't celebrate. Be well until the next one 😊
@@soberplantguy You should be proud of it. Happy Holidays and a brilliant 2025 for you.
thanks Dave for all you bring to this channel i learn other ways to do things and incorperate them into my repertoire happy holidays to you and your family
Thank you, and that's so wonderful to hear! Be well 😊
What are your household conditions? Temperature? Humidity? Do you use humidifiers?
In the living room, where most of the plants are during the winter (tent excluded), the day temp varies on the cloud cover. But, 58-60 overnight. 64-70 daytime (and 70 is on a good day 😆). Humidity with humdifiers running is in the mid 30s to low 40s, unless we're having a "warm" very moist day outside. I recently posted a pic of my humidity sitting at 12 percent on the plant porch with supplemental IR heating 😖
@soberplantguy thank you!
I’m so proud of you for using that beat up pan instead of your wife lasagna pan! Now next time you have lasagna it won’t taste like dirt lol 😂 Merry Christmas Dave, and have a great new year! I really enjoy your channel.

🎉🎉🎉
Yippee!

@ I really hope so haha
LOL
✂️ 🤣
A sense of humor about these things is ... mandatory 🤣
@@hanstera_deliciosa When I hit the big time ... I'm going stainless steel. Then I'll *never* put them away....

Would you use the same substrate mix (1/3 coco coir, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 coco husk) for a Hoya linearis?
I have mine in a plastic pot, and use a bit more coco coir. But I'm no expert on this one (or ... anything else in the world 😆). But I can confirm the general information that they really don't like to dry out. Cheers from Iowa City
@@soberplantguy Thank you and Merry Christmas🎄 from Los Angeles! I've only recently started collecting hoyas and I'm super glad I found your channel.

Ok Dave. Harli G is moving towards 25 plants…. 🤔
Yeah ... maybe not quite *that* But good on her. If I adopt a couple of children, perhaps I'll consider it 😆
This is the first time I've heard you mentioned Myco. Care to elaborate?
It’s the best thing for your plant roots! Mycelium is what connects everything under ground. Tons of info on the internet. Your plants will thank you 😊

The Paul Stamets of Hoya's 😂🤣
@@FredLeyda He's had a long, and very specific fascination .........

Stop hiding your comments! You're one of the people I was talking about 🤣
@ Im not the one hiding them…. 😅
The message is typed… its sent… it appears at the video….
And then later sometimes I feel like I want to add something to it… and its gone..
Ok this one came through…
Ill see how much I can retype from memory:
Did you know which orchid it was when you got the seedling?
Something about easy plants being more rewarding, nothing wrong with growing easier plants, I think we all should have more easy plants…
(Though it can be rewarding to figure out what a finicky plant needs)
In my downsizing journey I am starting to lean towards rehoming some of the more finicky Hoyas (maybe)
What/which did you downsize?
I love Hoya aff Lambii.. mine likes to make many vines and kill them off.. its currently growing leaves again so I am hoping it is happy now. The venation on it is so interesting!
Will there be an update on the death-pot rescues?
And maybe a short insert in another vid about how your Amaryllis flowers turned out?
About vids:
Im sometimes ok with the long ones
But prefer the shorter more bite sized ones that don’t need to be paused
Im currently happy to watch whatever you put out
But mainly on TH-cam for Hoya content 🌸
Patreon:
I like the idea of it…
But Im also on the fence…
Since its yet another “subscribtion” recurring expense..
Currently thinking about joining some… but also very hesitant 😊
And wishing you a wonderful day/week
(Think that was most of it)
@Wubblyt Sure, sure. Cool story, brah 🤣
Okay, let's see if this goes through 😉
@@soberplantguy hahaha I strongly dislike all those words and how they are used…
Purge/downsizing = sell plants to buy more plants
Wishlist = checklist ( = we shall not be happy with what we have)
Ah yes… the influenced to get plants and mosspole plants haha
Makes total sense
I am increasing my mosspoles to 4, not because I want more of them, but I use them to see if Ill like some of the plants that I already have better when they are less…… unruly…
Currently Epipremnum skelleton key is on one to evolve its leaves more, Syngonium pink lady is one one for the same reason (how many lobes can it get?), a finicky Scindapsus silver splash that does well on a pole but not without (might rehome that one)…. And soon another Syngonium to see if a full pole of it will look nice in the living room 😅
But NO MORE! 🤣
Its sort of ok with those plastic backed ones and a cup like thing at the top
Wow thats waaaaay not enough, they should be ashamed of themselves.
During the lockdowns my husband made some 5 minute vids for fun… took about 4 hours to make one 😅
But that was just for fun
I hope your responses will surface too someday
