I interprete this song as a hymn to humility. Miss Honey has suffered so much in her life but she's still happy with the small things she has. I think she is an example of how trauma is not an excuse to be a horrible person so other people. Maybe that's why Miss Honey and Matilda made such a good pair.
As much as this song is a testament to Miss Honey's kindness and humility, there's something so tragic about the line "It isn't much, but it is enough for me." Miss Trunchbull's abuse has demolished her self-esteem, left her feeling that she doesn't deserve anything, just the bare minimum. Even though we know she's entitled to so much more. We know as an audience that Miss Honey deserves so much more, and Matilda knows it too. But the way she keeps repeating the line over and over again, it's like a mantra that has been drilled into her for years. Because if she ever stopped believing that; if she ever stopped believing that she could have so much more in life, it would mean she would have to stand up to her abuser and risk getting hurt again. Even though this house is not much, it is much safer than confronting Aunt Trunchbull. And that's enough for her.
This song has my heart 😭💔 Not only does it have my heart; it breaks it every single time. Lashana Lynch is superb as Miss Honey, and so is everybody in this splendid cast. If there’s anything I’ve realized in this scene alone, it’s that the moment Miss Honey put the scarf on Matilda parallels the moment her father put the scarf on her. Simply put, Miss Honey didn’t want to say this out loud yet, but it seems she really, REALLY wanted to care for Matilda as her own and eventually have her for a daughter. 🥺💜
