Thanks for this, high quality. Rosedale Park was my hood from 64-68. I attended Redford HS. You showed the Community House where we attended dances, and our block on Piedmont St. The McDonalds at 5:39 was where the "greasers" and "frats" would rumble. Ted Nugent lived in North Rosedale then.
Racism, Redlining, White Flight, Poor Schools, Disinvestment, Lack of Grocery Stores, Roads that were ignored for decades, and this Neighborhood is STILL beautiful.
I love your Detroit and suburbs videos! I grew up in Dearborn on W. Outer Drive in the 60s and 70s. My father had a business downtown Detroit on Woodward Ave. I’ve returned many times since and have seen blight and transformation. I think your videos are honest and I especially appreciate the stats you provide. I’m addicted so please keep adding more. Perhaps updates as Detroit improves?
Detroit is still beautiful. Born and raised in Detroit. Still here and not going anywhere. I love my city. It has it's moments like any other city. Yet Detroit has come a long way from being just the Motor City. I haven't been to a city yet that doesn't remind me of Detroit. I lived in Louisville Kentucky for 2yrs. And let's just say It make Detroit look like a field of roses.
I been here all 34 years of my life and grew up in Rosedale Park. The shock that a city of 140 sq mi actually has nice parts to it is quite offensive, and very small minded.
I understand why it’s offensive, I grew up there too(been in the south 10+ years). But outside of Detroit, all people know is 8 mile. I’m shocked when someone even says Woodward because there isn’t much discussion about Detroit outside of Detroit unless it’s negative.
My old stompin' grounds! First McDonald's I ever saw was on Grand River and Fenkell. In the seventies, houses in Rosedale Park could be bought for $25K, the same price as smaller homes to the northwest.
I grew up in South Rosedale. That McDonald's opened in I think 1960. I remember it took me and my sister two years to convince our parents to let the family have a meal there. You see hamburger places in Detroit had a bad reputation with gang toughs hanging around at the pay phones. I later learned that was why McDonald's restaurants never had pay phones because the founder Ray Kroc was sensitive to that fact.
"Grandmont" and "Grandmont #1" probably come from the name of original subdivision "plats" when the area was first sold to be developed. If you check real estate listings, you will find nearby areas that are "Grandmont #3," and so forth. My guess is the other platted Grandmont subdivisions built around that time were not as ritzy, so those subs might not have had organized owner groups maintaining signs proudly stating the name of the sub.
Checking further, the plat for Grandmont # 2 is between the Southfield freeway and Memorial, north of Glendale, and one block south of Schoolcraft. The plat for Grandmont # 3 is tiny, just a couple of blocks near the corner of Glendale and Memorial. There does not seem to be a Grandmont # 4, etc. The Grandmont without a number looks like it was established in 1916, and the other ones were in 1923 and 1924
What a beautiful neighbourhood. Modern America has become so ugly, cheap and throwaway. Look at the design, craftsmanship, quality materials that have gone into this era.
Another great video Chris! You did a series of comprehensive videos for all neighborhoods of Detroit, do you have any plans to do so for other major cities?
Violent crime? I been living in Detroit since 2010 & I have not witnessed anything violent personally. I think it's who you run with here. I stay to myself and have zero issues 🙌💯
I had a friend who lived on Glastonbury back in the 60s. Other local lore: those of us growing up in the Brightmoor area pronounced it Staheelin, and pronounced Lahser, as Lasher.
My sister recently connected with a cousin of ours in North Rosedale Park, on Bretton Road (sister's in the Dallas area, we're in LA). I recall as a small child (around 1950) visiting our cousins on Warwick in Rosedale Park, and being SO impressed at how the "rich" people lived. I'm pleased to see how well the area has maintained, tho' I recall a few years ago that many of these houses could be bought for $2,500 and the promise to live there and maintain the property. NRP is beautiful, with wide streets, tall trees, lovely lawns, and large brick homes. It amazes me that one of these large homes can be bought for what amounts to the down payment on a house in Los Angeles. Maybe we all should retire to North Rosedale Park!
Houses in Rosedale Park never went for 2,500. even during Detroit's darkest days. This area has always been affluent. not sure where and how you got that information from.
I grew up in South Rosedale and my grandfather built the first private house in North Rosedale. I asked him once why the streets were so narrow. He said when the subdivisions were built the predominant car on the roads then was the Model T and that determined the width of the streets!
Detroit has some absolutely glorious neighborhoods ,unlike most cities who could only dream of. The stated value of $94,000 is a little bit more than questionable looking through the listings. They are there easily double that and many more than that.
My mother grew up going to a highschool in this area. She cleaned many of the nice houses owned by well to do families. She did so to put food on the table for her & her little brother. Her Detroit policeman father was too busy gambling away his paycheck.
There's a good nyt article on Rosedale Park and how one of the reasons why it survived the downfall of the city was because it was historically racially integrated and harmonious. It wasn't gripped by the white flight of the 70s and 80s like the rest of the city.

This is a beautiful area. Detroit must have been magnificent when it was all intact and kept like this.

So much nicer than modern suburban development (post war). I think the high point of American residential design was the 1920s

what is the area around Mumford high school called. Used to live there
Not sure if there’s a name for that neighborhood. Maybe that area is just referred to as Wyoming and McNichols?
Bagley is one of them, there’s also Lodge Heights, Blackstone Park…Sherwood Forest, Palmer Woods, and Green Acres are also not far from Mumford.
