  • In todays episode of Cocktails with Ciara, I'm making a classic Singapore Sling! A beautiful summery gin-based cocktail, this drink was requested by my lovely Patreon supporter James Spreacher. I was excited to try it myself for the first time, so let's see how I got on
    ✨ Ingredients ✨
45ml Gin (I used Bombay Sapphire)
    21ml fresh lemon juice
    7ml sugar syrup
    7ml Benedictine
    15ml Cherry Brandy
    Soda Water to top
    1 dash orange bitters
Maraschino Cherries and lemon slice to garnish
    ✨ Method ✨
Add all ingredients (bar the soda water) to a shaker.
    Shake with ice.
Strain into a collins glass and top with soda
garnish with maraschino cherries and a lemon wheel
    More info:
The Singapore Sling was created by Mr Ngiam Tong Boon in the Raffles Hotel at the start of the 20th Century

Ciara, since you've dabbled with a couple of New Orleans signature cocktails before I thought I'd recommend what may be the one we're most infamous for, the Hurricane. It's a staple here and Pat O'Brien's bar is probably the epicenter. Absolutely love what you're doing.

Many years ago in the late 80s when I was a university student, I noticed nearly everyone my age ordered beer at bars. Occasionally someone ordered wine out of pretension. I wanted to be different and order cocktails. I knew there was more than gin and tonics so I bought a bartending book and began reading. Then I began ordering: rusty nail, Bronx cocktail, old fashioned, gin fizz, zombie, brandy alexander, white russian, whiskey sour, fuzzy navel, the martini family, etc. I learned some bars weren't as fully stocked as they claimed and some bartenders couldn't do more than pour beer.

One thing to remember is that there's a difference between cherry brandy - that is, brandy distilled from cherry wine, and cherry-flavored brandy, which is much sweeter.

I remember having Hurricanes at Pat O’Brien’s many times. The night of my high school graduation I think half my class was there. The Pat O’s version is just the Hurricane mix (kinda like fruit punch Kool Aid) and dark rum on ice in a hurricane glass. When you drink at Pat O’s you are buying the glass too. I don’t have them anymore, but I used to have several filled with Mardi Gras beads and coins. I bet my mother probably got rid of them years ago. I do see recipes for a traditional hurricane which I might try sometime. Just need the liliko’i or passion fruit juice, I have the rest of the ingredients.

After you asked the Benedictine question, I consulted the Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender's Guide, and was surprised at how many Benedictine cocktails there were. The one that sounds most interesting (there are a couple that call for egg yolk) is the Cabaret Cocktail. It calls for 1.5 oz dry gin, 1/2 tsp dry vermouth, 1/2 tsp Benedictine, and 2 dashes bitters. Pretty straightforward. Cheers!

One trick to teach a dog to come when called is to sit on the floor about two meters from a friend [or a wall if preferred] and play with your dog by rolling a ball to the friend [or bouncing it off the wall] and each time the ball rolls close to you, you call "come" to the dog, who will be chasing after it, then just congratulate the dog for their successful "come" when they get to you, treats possible. Eventually the dog will associate "come" with running to you (and possibly getting a treat).

The Singapore Sling is the official cocktail of Singapore Airlines and they make it available on every flight (a simplified version of it).
The real version uses Grenadine, Cointreau, lime and pineapple juices, along with gin, cherry brandy, Benedictine and Angostura bitters. No lemon or simple syrup or soda water (it’s a flat drink). I know there’s a lockdown and things are hard to get. There are countless versions of it, so you’re not wrong. That’s just the original ingredients.

You might try a Silent Night. It is very easy -- Bourbon, Benedictine, and Peychaud's Bitters -- garnished with an orange peel.

Benedictine cocktail: Kentucky Colonel. 3 oz bourbon 1/2 oz benedictine shake over ice until well chilled. Garnish with a lemon twist. enjoy

You should try a 'Silent Night' if you want to use your Benedictine. It's pretty much just that and bourbon. Pretty good. I think you'd like it.

A good cocktail that uses Benedictine is the Monte Carlo Cocktail. It's basically a Manhattan, but with Benedictine instead of Vermouth.

Ciara you are just lovely (had to say it but it's true) I make my own moonshine all different flavors here in the states just for myself and a family member or two and my favorite is coffee shine, it's just cold brew coffee made with moonshine instead of water and a little brown sugar to cut the sting down. Makes a great hot toddy in the bitter cold mornings, afternoon and evenings.

most sneaky thing i remember from when i was young was gin and apricot soda.
you could mix it 50/50 and it would still just taste like apricot winegum.

If making several Singapore Slings for company I cheat and substitute Sprite or 7 up for the lemon juice, simple syrup, and club soda. For a bit more tartness to compensate, squeeze a lemon wedge into each glass and use it as garnish.
Yours would be better, but mine is close and if I'm making several it's easier.

I think you'd like an aviation as a similar cocktail with a less sweetness.
    2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce maraschino liqueur (I use luxardo)
dash (like 5ml or less) of crème de violette (totally optional, can skip in flavor of any floral liqueur )
3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
    Garnish: brandied cherry
    Served up

Have you tried a "Butter knife"? It's 1 part Kamchatka Vodka and 2 parts orange Kool-Aid. We named it that because it's not a screwdriver but it works in a pinch!

Additional cocktails with Benedictine: the Monte Carlo (rye, Benedictine, and Angostura bitters) and the Preakness (same ingredients, plus sweet vermouth).

If you like refreshing drinks, try a Paper Plane, equal parts lemon juice, bourbon, Aperol and Amaro Nonino. Shake with ice and serve.

Benedictine and tonic: In a tall glass with ice, combine 1 ounce of Bénédictine and 4 ounces of a high-quality tonic water. Squeeze a lime wedge into the drink. Repo-Bénédictine Manhattan: In a mixing glass with ice, combine 2 ounces of reposado tequila and 1 ounce of Bénédictine, with a dash of Angostura bitters. Stir all that up until well-chilled, then strain into a cocktail coupe. Garnish with a lime twist, squeezing over the surface of the drink to spray its citrus oils over the top, plus a brandied cherry. Bénédictine Sour: In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine 2 ounces of bourbon , 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 3/4 ounce of Bénédictine, and a 1/4 of simple syrup. Shake all that up hard, then strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a few thin lemon wheels.
