    Yay - a succulent that can survive my winters! WAIT. Backup! Heat? No one ever seems to discuss heat when talking semps. “Full Sun” … “A BIT of stress” - yes, in California. What about Texas when temps are 105 to 115 for weeks or months? Still full sun? I’m thinking maybe not but I’m not sure - because nobody ever brings up heat!!! Errugh?

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! In hotter climates, it's better to plant semps in spots that get afternoon shade. The combo of full sun, high heat, and drought can definitely be too much for them.

    I have had indoor succulents forever. Love them. Windows they grow in are full. Trying some outside in a large terra cotta fountain bowl we drilled a hole in for drainage. I'm in Phoenix, AZ, and have an on going gopher problem, They have killed off everything except citrus, a pomegranate tree, and some lantana. Really discouraging. I'd love to try a rock garden area, but for now, have a few outdoor succulents in my fountain bowl. Worried about the summer--They are in full sun right now, but can move them onto my covered porch this summer. Planted them with a bag of regular cactus soil, and it does seem like it didn't drain well. Now I know it needed the other stuff....great. Informative. I joined the succulent of the month club and have the four guys outside. We'll see how they do. I think they'll need more water this summer, but maybe not. That is the only real question I have. These guys are new, and not certain how dry they can be.....guess I'll find out. thanks for the nice, informative videos.

      Yes, growing Sempervivum in Arizona is more challenging! People do make it work by using shade cloth and watering more regularly in the mornings. Good luck!

    Great presentation . Thank you . Is it better to have a smaller pot for sempervivum or larger pot ? Is it better for them to be root bound ? What fertilizer do you use ? Is Dr. Earth organic fertilizer ok ?

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  ปีที่แล้ว

      Root-bound is just fine for succulents, and Sempervivum are fairly forgiving on container size. Pots over about 7" in diameter can be tricky just because it can take so long for so much soil to fully dry out. Personally, I grow them in-ground and do not fertilize, but you can apply diluted fertilizer once a month in the growing season if you really want to encourage growth.

    I just ordered two of the bulk trays of sempervivum for the rock garden I'm planning to set up this spring. Should've added a couple of these nuggets to the order!! Any tips for laying out / designing rock gardens or favorite places to find inspiration? As always, great video!

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Big boulders are your friend in a succulent rock garden and a top dressing of gravel. Think 50% rocks, 50% plants to start. I find dense clusters/swathes of each variety tends to look better than spaced out plants or mixed assortments of varieties. We'll be publishing more videos of me building rock gardens start to finish this spring/summer, but in the meantime, here's a bit I wrote about the process: mountaincrestgardens.com/faqs-help/#reamaze#0#/kb/planting-and-transplanting/how-to-build-a-succulent-rock-garden

    I started growing gold nugget when they only had one or online two sources and they were 15$ or more for 2inch pot. Then they dropped to about 9.99 for 2 inch pot online. Bought 2 more. Then out of the blue my local market that sells flowers in the spring sells 3 inch potted perienials had a tray of them. $3.95 per 3 inch pot. I bought all 8 of them. No idea where he obtained the larger size pot variety but they had two or three rosettes per pot! The price was great and they looked healthy. Still doing fine 3 years later outside in southern michigan. If i see more at that low price again i will buy another tray.

      Yes, if you're going to fertilize, you could use the same low N-P-K solution for both Sempervivum and cacti and apply sparingly in the growing season. And great choices!

    What are the minimum light requirements for this plant? I get 120-150 foot candles of light outdoors since I live in a shaded area in the pnw where it's cloudy from fall to the next spring... Would it be a bad idea to keep it outdoors in the fall and winter and take it indoors under a grow light in summer? even in summer my balcony is shaded, so would bringing it indoors under a grow light simulate the change of seasons better? Fell in love with this plant but not sure I can make it work 😔
    Also, do you have any resources on debugging succulents when bringing them indoors? Have seen advice to soak plants in soapy water but not sure if this would damage the farina or cause rot in succulents
    Thank you!

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In that deep of shade, Gold Nugget will mostly show its green tones and you'll need to be very mindful about water and drainage to prevent rot. It's challenging to grow Sempervivum indoors and replicate seasonal temperature patterns inside. If you want to get golden tones out of your Gold Nugget, I would recommend keeping it under a very bright (~800 lumens per square foot) grow light year-round. Keep the plant ~6" from the light and keep the light on for 12+ hours per day.
      A thorough spraying with 70% isopropyl alcohol will be a fine de-bugging. If you let the alcohol dry before placing your plant in bright light, it will not harm the plant.
      Good luck!

    Love watching your videos! I've ordered from you guys so many times and never had a bad experience! One question.. I think I have the "slowly acclimate to more sun" down pat. How do you acclimate them to the cold though? It's just starting to get cold here in PA. If I placed an order now, how would I go about getting them outdoors?

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! This time of year, you'll be fine moving them directly outside. It's the big extremes (like moving an indoor plant directly out into winter frost) that you have to worry about. Just be sure to get them planted at least one month before your first expected frost so that they have time to establish roots before slowing down for winter.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can vary between a couple to 10+ years depending on the variety of Sempervivum and its growing conditions. Fortunately, they all tend to produce lots of offsets before they flower that will live on after the mother rosette blooms out.

    • @Ryklian
      @Ryklian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sempervivum can live outside year round, mine do great in the winter outside (I'm zone 6a, they are in pots). I cover them with a frost cloth if expecting ice but leave them for snow.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Sempervivum can grow outdoors in New York winters. Melting snow is not an issue as long as you're using a gritty soil and, if in pots, containers with drainage holes.

    I bought one of these from my local farmers market and it started etiolating because I don’t have good windows. Now I I have it under a grow light and the leaves are healthy and pointing upward, but the color isn’t golden anymore; it’s a solid vibrant green. Is that normal? Will it ever go back to the gold and red?

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So glad you caught the etiolation quickly! It's green because it's not getting outdoor sun and cold nights. If possible, move your Gold Nugget outdoors. You can start it in partial, morning sun then gradually move it into as much as full sun over the course of two weeks. It can absolutely get its gold and red tones back if grown outdoors. Good luck!

  • @ryansmith83

    I purchased one of these from your website on a whim a week or so ago. I noticed on mine, like some of yours in the video, that the bottom leaves of the plant sort of curve downward, while the rosette on top points up. Is this the way they are supposed to look or am I doing something wrong? I am keeping the plant indoors but it’s under very strong full-spectrum grow lights (about 5000 footcandles) for 12 hours a day.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure it's 5,000 foot-candles? That would be very very bright. You shouldn't need anything over 700 foot-candles. Regardless, outer leaves pointing down is the first sign of etiolation (lack of light). You can keep your grow light on for a longer duration and/or move the Gold Nugget closer to the light. And I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest moving it outside after the last frost :)

  • @Scott-N-Atl

    Our winters aren't very cold, but usually very wet (not snowy - at most 1/4" snow). Would it be best to bring the Sempervivum inside during our winter to avoid it sitting in either a saturated ground or pot? (Southeastern US)

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Still preferable to keep them outdoors, you just want to be sure they're planted in raised beds/berms and very rocky/sandy soil. That's how the Sempervivum growers in the rainy Pacific Northwest make it work :) If you are planting in containers, you could bring them under an overhang. But indoor Sempervivum is never the answer, in my opinion.

      Thank you so much for mentioning this! Wish I would have. Growing Sempervivum in the heat of the southwest can be challenging. I've talked with gardeners who've made it work in Phoenix by using shade cloth and judicious watering. So no, you would not want these in full sun in 100F heat.

    Why do the Golden Nugget hatching chicks die in the winter

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say without seeing the plant or knowing its growing conditions. But if they are young offsets that didn't have a chance to establish roots before winter, they will be more vulnerable to frost.

    • @Mountaincrestgardens
      @Mountaincrestgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a combination of things, but two hours is not enough sunlight and it will cause the leaves to stretch and turn leggy. The red could be stress from too little water, but it's hard to say without seeing the plants.
