    This brings back great memories! As a rookie in Tampa under Sam Wyche my job was to pick signs from other teams. Everybody uses the same 2 screen signals LOL... As a junior in college Mooch and I sat in the office for hours figuring out signals.. Great stuff coach. Truly..don't overthink it.

    there's a lot to be said in simplifying the communication. We have to remember that, as coaches, we (generally) have more football IQ than our players. It is our jobs to make sure that our communication is easily translatable to ALL players. I've spent this whole offseason thinking how I can make it as easy as possible so as to communicate the best way from the sidelines. I've landed on colors = runs (words L go left, words with R go right) and the pass plays just have a signal for the concept. Stick is breaking a stick. Flood is pouring down rain (like in itsy bitsy spider). Be sure that you are also sure that your assistants know the calls ;)

      You are correct coach. It isn't what we know. It's what our players know.

    Good video, nice and short which is how easy you should make your communication system.
    Personally have used 4 different ways over the years; hand signals, rotating guys in w/ the play, QB radio helmet, and wrist coaches. I've found wrist coaches are the easiest/best even if it's extra work for me during the week.

    • @CoachMcKie
      @CoachMcKie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s why you need more than one signal for each. And wristbands + one word plays + tempo

      That's what I do. Scout signals. Bad part is I never get to see our team play, always on the road on Friday nights. You wouldn't believe how simple some teams signals are, and they don't change them all game. Most of the time I got em figured out by the end of their third series unless it's a 3 and out or a house call. Funny thing, last year a team I scouted ran the same signals all game. When we played them they had changed them. They were up 16 points at half. They switched back the second half and we won by 5. Off to another state championship game, the only one I get to watch if we make it. Word of advice, you need to change your key, and your wipe off signal every series. Key meaning you giving all the fake signals you want but means nothing until: for example, you flex your muscles, or touch the top of your head. Wipe off is if you want to change what you called for any reason, like you see a package change on the defense you can take advantage of by changing the play. You best believe every good program has people watching you at nearly every game

    Is it the quarterback's job to know the offensive line calls to relate it to them, or does the oline look to the sideline for the play?

    • @CoachMcKie
      @CoachMcKie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both. QB relays but tackle closest to sideline calls play as well

    How about for Pistol 2x2? Would it be the same signal as Gun? Or would you say “Pistol” and then signal the 2x2

    • @CoachMcKie
      @CoachMcKie  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could give a code word dealing with guns in front of the formation and that tells your kids what you want.
