Tune: William Billings, 1787
Words: Edward Young
Meter: Prose
The Lord is ris’n indeed! Hallelujah!
Now is Christ risen from the dead,
And become the first-fruits of them that slept.
Hallelujah, and did He rise? did He rise?
Hear it ye nations! hear it, Oh ye dead!
He rose, He burst the bars of death
And triumphed o’er the grave.
Then I rose, then first humanity
Triumphant passed the crystal ports of light
And seized eternal youth.
Man, all immortal hail,
Hail heaven, all lavish of strange gifts to man,
Thine’s all the glory,
Man’s the boundless bliss.
Bill Billings. The Boston tanner and Singing School Master.
I have heard and sung this piece many times, but this may be my favourite recording. You all capture the spirit and style of sacred harp perfectly.
Our small group, The Sweetwater Shape Note Singers from Gainesville Florida, are just starting to learn this so your example sets a high standard! Wonderful!
Lord bless you. I get terribly confused reading shape notes!
I sang this divine hymn the first time last Saturday, April 6th, with the Grand Rapids Shape Note Singers in Grand Rapids, Michigan. God be praised!
He is a great leader. I have watched this several times, at least. Look at the smiles on all of those Altos.
What a triumphant hymn and masterfully done. I have never heard this before. I wish the words were posted across the video or down below.
I love this. Listen to it on repeat. I'd love to learn this style of singing!
This is a nice, balanced recording.
Maybe, the best from the first and second annuals.
Spectacular singing! Wonderful hearing all the parts so clearly, great leading.
Edwin does a masterful job! Great vocals by all... I a distantly related to these folks!
Hallelujah! Praise be to God!
I have watched this video so many times and I never tire of it! Thank you Edwin and everyone who is singing on the video. I spy several friends there.
Y'all do the Sacred Harp (and Billings) proud!
WOW ! Awesome worship sound ! very well done.
Wow! Just . . . WOW!
I love his tie
I'm not sure what is printed on his tie. Can you tell please?
I'm not entirely sure myself, to be honest, but I like the design
This pleases the Lord.
Love this group!!
beautiful. simply beautiful
Happy Easter 😊

Hey, this is now my new favourite. I will release a video game port of it when Easter comes.
"He burst the bonds of death!"
Beautiful!!!
Great stuff, and Edwin doesn't look a day over 70!
I would love to hear this group singing "O Virgin Unspotted".
Why, they are beautiful, Protestants and think Mary was a sinner saved by grace, like any other saved by grace. A Saint for certain and called blessed for her role as mother of Jesus. But not any more saintly like Paul or John.
great
Perfect.. this guy looks like Herry from Hendersons..
Was it necessary to SCREAM through it? I hear no attempt to capture any of the nuances of either the text or the music, no any attempt for the voices to BLEND--each individual singer seems to be trying to sing louder than his/her neighbor. These kids do a much better job: th-cam.com/video/cGUpwEWLZxU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2EEo5d6DtZACwtRU
Is this leader a music professor? He seems like one
Beautiful but a shame to see all the women with shorn hair.
