First match at Shanghai was insane from both. I remember Wawrinka was playing the tennis of his life but in the end Roger is Roger..

Poor Wawrinka. At least he got his moment against Federer at the Monte Carlo 2014 final

And it was Fed's best chance at winning Monte Carlo

I remember that Federer finished a match in the 2014 finals with a back problem. If you look at his facial expression after the match, you can tell he finished the match injured. After this match, he couldn't play in the final against Djokovic and withdrew from the tournament to prepare for the Davis Cup final.

Mirka had his back during this very short lived scare

and what a week of rest/prep to get ready for David Cup final…
he had to struggle with the back problems and put things on the table with Stan…
Tension was there during this SF, with Mirka adding oil on the fire xD
No really to see these 2 winning the doubles match in Lille a week later was definitely an houdini-act

i feel like AO2017 deserves an honorable mention here. stan pushing roger to 5 sets in a GS semi when roger was just coming back from a 6-month break due to injury. plus it was a prelude to that amazing final roger won against rafa!

Nah. Roger was coming back from injury and Stan still couldn't seal the deal. That SF was Roger's 9th or 10th match back (if you include the XO tournament he played before the AO). Now way he should have been match fit enough to take down Stan after Berdych and the Nishikori 5 setter. All the concentration lapses he had in that match is the only reason it was close.

2018 Camera angle was so annoying. Not sure if anyone else also felt so.

Do you have Roger's match against Goffin from Basel 2015? Thanks.

Watching Alcaraz play recently, I have a new understanding of "mental strength". Djokovic and Nadal are indeed more likely to show their willpower, but for all-around players like Alcaraz or Federer, they have to improve all their skills to a high level at the same time, otherwise it will seem that the so-called "mental strength" is not enough.

Wawrinka had too much respect for Roger

Yea I agree with this, it's so strange seeing people not bring this up. It's the same for Serbs when they play against Novak. They have way too much respect and they lose the match before it even begins. Wawrinka is obviously better than Novak's countrymen but the principle remains - most recently with Djere vs Novak at the US open, 2 sets up and couldn't close. Troicki as well.

las voleas de Wawrinka en ese partido del 2014 fueron bastante cuestionables, recuerdo que había momentos que hasta a Federer le molestaba estar perdiendo el partido con alguien que voleaba tan mal

Stan lost a lot of close ones vs fed on hc. Another being iw13. Eventually couldn't register one W vs fed on hard

    You forgot 2013 Indian Wells.
Federer had a sour back and was destined to lose the third set.

wawrinka should've won in 2014, but federers wife called him a crybaby as stan was winning and that threw him off his game, hence for why i have no respect for federers wife
