    As a newer trapper, I found the explanation of the angles of your dirt holes very helpful! Thank you!

    Great video! Always put your bait, lures, scat, urine, whatever you want him to smell behind your trap. Make him cross over your trap to get a sniff. You're doing a great job. You'll have those fox in no time! Be sure to post your scouting cam video of catching them!

    I always play the wind I learned that many years ago not to age myself but been trapping fox since 1978. It's no different than deer hunting or predator calling. They live and die by the wind. Keep up the good work.

    Get some cotton under your pan and a lot less dirt on the trap. I want that pan almost level for foxes. They are so hard to catch. Use some natural feature or sticks in the road to guide them where you want them

      Actually gives me some pretty good ideas cause I have had a bunch of coyotes this year walking by my sets and having foot prints around them but not close to the trap to where I would even think they stepped on the trap and felt it , I am using a 3” auger this year instead of my 2” and drilling them more at a 45 and I am thinking now that could be my problem

    i agree completley with the adjustments i just had the same scenario this last week on the line, i was puttin so many sets in the ground that day i started accidentally making my bait holes at more of an easy angle for me drilling so quick really... rushing, catch rate was horrible on that first couple 2 or 3 checks and then i pulled the cards when i seen how they practically fully committed and io still didn't catch and it was the same 4 traps 3 days in a row i pulled moved 20 ft and re dug there hole at a more challenging angle for them to have to work a little longer and next check had 2 greys 30 ft from each other lol. i swear its fun to me to rewatch and learn from the cameras makes me a much smarter and more efficient trapper and helps the confidence too ! appreciate the videos bud!

  • @DarJenoutdoors
    @DarJenoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The bait hole angle theory is spot on. The way that one pawed at the set looks to be almost exactly what the one I'm playing chess with at the moment did. I think you're right about the scat, and in all honesty nothing should be in front of the trap pan. Everything should be behind it. I remade my set this afternoon, now lets hope I don't lost a bishop tonight!

    • @johnmead8437

      Everything behind forces them rather than persuades. Going from one lure to another might distract them from detecting a trap. have used that tactic on different species seemingly successfully. But without a cam interpretation has an element of guessing. Note the camera only tells the story in the frame, & if it triggers.

    Clint Locklear did a study and I think it was for both fox and coyotes. But he found that I think the number was close to 80% work a set from the right.

  • @joshmounce1520
    @joshmounce1520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like you said. Once they got down wind, they came back and worked the set. In that particular situation, Id have set the trap on the left. I know you said you always set to the right but certain situations should be set to left. I think most animals lead with the right foot. Perhaps even putting straight in front of hole for that wind. Looked like the red put his right paw in front of the hole to dig with the left. Agreed on the steeper angle on hole tho

      Can't see the angle of the hole being the issue.
      I don't think they didn't go for your bait because they didn't like its looks. It was dark.
      I've caught with 2 traps within inches of each other when 1 wasn't working. ☝️

My question is is seen u putting fox in some milk crates and I was watching a video of yours and you said you had some new and I didn’t get finished the video and can’t find it . I use a dog kennel right now lol had to rework the bottom are they will come out WHAT is a good size for coyotes to transport em . I got something for my foxes if I get on.

    Do foxes leave scat on top of features like grass clumps and rocks, dirt heaps like dogs do?
    They didn't seem to have detected the traps, although that is difficult to tell. Having dogs that know traps they avoid them so casually it is difficult to realise they aren't just incredibly lucky not to be wearing bling. Elevated attractant may divert attention from the ground.
    Seems traps etc in the same spot could easily get them next time. Having a treat for them to get out of the hole would distract them, like a sausage etc. They should get to like that hole. Would be interesting to see what they do on a buried but not over-dressed up camo set, just smooth soft dirt for soft paws. See whether they detect and react to it. If feeding from the site successive reactions would show if they drop their guard, if they had it tuned.

    IMHO trap placement should be downwind from the scat, in your video, trap slighly off center to left front of bait hole with scat on right so he comes upwind to hole crosses trap to get to scat.

    Looks like ya had a down hill grade. With them being set to the right, uphill side, the critter is going to use his down hill foot to brace while working hole with up hill side. Noticed this a while back and offset to down hill side and improved catches. Everything else you said is spot on. If you ever run them in midlands of SC let me know. Got plenty of land and need some help.

    Not to argue, but I think you're misreading about the angle of the dirt hole.
    It's their nose that wasn't satisfied, not their eyes. Covered bait catches.
