I see in this man's face such a history. A history of profound suffering and persecution. As he whimsically strikes the keys in the most melodic fashion, one can see the past memories of his executed family and friends. But in these grey eyes, I see--no feel--a sense of liberation. I see relief and moreover I see the memories of that courageous German who saved Wladyslaw's life that day. May all who unjustly suffered during the days of the Holocaust rest in peace, and they surely can with Chopin's heavenly composition.
About the finest interpretation of this piece I've ever found. Played exactly how I've always heard it in my mind, but never realized. The wistful reverie in the center is so perfectly expressed, you know only a human is capable of such nuance.
Sir, I honor your spirit and music. Thanks for having survived to share your unmeasurable pain and amazing victory, and humanity of a german with many people throughtout the world.
A beautiful piece of music most fitting for what the player had suffered and yet live to tell his story. Chopin's feelings come through his fingers as no one else could have felt! Beautifully sad and yet so really human!
I visited his grave in May 2012... i walked 5 1/2 miles to find it, in the polish military cemetery... i am glad i was able to visit and pay my respects to this man....
There is a film based on the book about his life. The Pianist (2002), a great movie. Adrien Brody as him. The film is the journey of survival when he was Nazi hunt. You should watch this film :)
Thank you for been existed, Wladyslaw Szpilman. Your life move and inspire me and make me feel futile a little bit for the things I care of before knowing you.
OMG there is still a recording of him, and it is Chopin's Nocturne in C sharp minor. The same one that is played at the beginning of the movie The Pianist which is about Wladyslaw Szpilman.
This movie and this piece (my favorite) intrigued me about the holocaust. I went through many books and documentaries about the holocaust. Indeed a sad sad event in the history of mankind. This piece makes me sad even though its such beautiful melody.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I always wanted to hear him but couldn't find a good mp3 recording. What a wonderful gift on a Sunday afternoon to actually see him playing.
A lot of people shouldn't have died. But many millions did anyway. Millions. A number so large it's hard to wrap your head around. We can relate to one person, or one family. THAT we understand. THAT we can FEEL. To multiply that millions upon millions of times is unfathomable. If we mourned one victim per day, every day, for the rest of our lives, it wouldn't be enough time to mourn even 25,000 people. (assuming sixty years from today)
No he was not. Educate yourself. Szpilman was not a crystal person although he was a great pianist. You saw a fiction movie from Hollywood and you think it was true. It was a wartime and German butchers murdered millions civilians. Szpilman did not even help a fellow Jewish singer Wiera Gran. Szpilman said in the court that he had heard of her collaboration in "aryan" Warsaw during the war since August 1943
he wasn't a hero. he was hiding during the war but to my mind, no one should blame him for this. We can't even imagine the cruelty of war and no one can predict how they would have behaved in such a situation. And we must remember that he had a very "Jewish appearance" so it was impossible for him to fight as a soldier/upriser because if someone had seen him on a street he would have been taken immediately to a camp or shot. He was a great pianist and a good man, but heroes were these people, who were dying on the streets of Warsaw for their Fatherland.

that Nocturne must bring so many sad memories to his mind, i mean think about it, he played this just before the war, and during the war if im right he lost all his family, and he played just after the war. I guess playing this piece means quite a lot to him :(
It's a pity that Wladislaw Szpilman has already passed away. He was a real pianist in flesh and blood, and all his efforts during the World War II are really to be mentioned
this man was my idol before i even saw how he really looks like. The movie The Pianist is beyond amazing. Life changing. when you have the power and will to live, nothing can kill you.

Chopin's music is the essence of the Polish spirit
Justyna d maybe or not, However- this clip is more about Szpilman than Chopin ..!
Justyna d of the human spirit
I'm not going to lie, I just cried listening to this. He's such an inspirational man. It just makes me want to sit playing my piano for days.
He plays different. Every second of his play tells his story. Such a brave soul..
About the finest interpretation of this piece I've ever found. Played exactly how I've always heard it in my mind, but never realized. The wistful reverie in the center is so perfectly expressed, you know only a human is capable of such nuance.

This makes me bawl my eyes out, his story is so beautiful in such an abstract way, it proves that history should not repeat itself.
This is the best ever nocturne played by Mr.Szpilman
A beautiful piece of music most fitting for what the player had suffered and yet live to tell his story. Chopin's feelings come through his fingers as no one else could have felt! Beautifully sad and yet so really human!
Chopin's nocturnes are melancholic
r.i.p Szpilman & Hosenfeld
this is the best movie i have ever saw. The Pianist (2002)
Safe Your avatar describes it all :)
DJ Daemonix No. Not because I'm Jewish. I watch a lot of movies, this is the best one.
Safe I agree.
I agree partially - it is one of the best films ever. Another one is the Son of Saul which I've seen recently. (I'm not Jew...)
+Tamás Selmeczy What genre of movie is that?
When I listen to his play,
I'm always moved!
His play reminds me of his film. I wish his life was stable...
I love him and his play♥
I visited his grave in May 2012... i walked 5 1/2 miles to find it, in the polish military cemetery... i am glad i was able to visit and pay my respects to this man....
It is really hard to describe feelings when I hear this...no more war and misery for my country.
Wladyslaw Szpilman forever great man.
A wonderful post. Thank you for sharing this great music!

This nocturne brings tears in my eyes. Such a lovely composer! Genius!
So good to see the real "pianist" play this piece! Thanks for uploading
Danke
This is so beautiful! His playing tells the story.
Thank you for been existed, Wladyslaw Szpilman. Your life move and inspire me and make me feel futile a little bit for the things I care of before knowing you.
His memoirs are awesome
Szpilman looks like he was tearing up toward the end.. That broke my heart. I wish he was still alive, this music is truly amazing
I just love this piece of music. It sounds so sad and at the same time so powerful and so heart felt.
OMG there is still a recording of him, and it is Chopin's Nocturne in C sharp minor. The same one that is played at the beginning of the movie
The Pianist which is about Wladyslaw Szpilman.

Great man! Great artist!
the emotion with which the art is made/played can evoke feelings .... this really did.
Indeed, this performance is a phenomenon of Chopin's sensitivity and pathos.
This is the best of its kind of Chopin.Up Thanks.
Thanks for your post. Two fine men. On 25 November 2008, Yad Vashem recognized Wilhelm Hosenfeld as Righteous Among the Nations.
Gracias x haber existido!! Spilman
Oh my God!!! What a man, what a destiny, what a talent. Blessings lay upon you and that German officer!!!
A soul gentle enough to channel Chopin, yet tough enough to withstand the worst of humanity. A fine man.
The Pianist!
Beautiful man, beautiful music xx
This man is better than every single one of us.

I think its amazing that he tried to help free the man that helped him. How many others would do that.
No flaying of arms or pulling monkey faces here...!!!! performed perfectly, played as it should be played...no silly affectations...bravo maestro
Im proud to be pianis, seeing his movie "The Pianist" human with art soul can survive with every way...
the same Chopin Nocturne by the same man ... after 6 years of war ... shocking ... epic ...
