There are no slums in Helsinki, there are only good and slightly better neighborhoods in Helsinki.

It's just that the finnish standards are kind of high so what would be totally acceptable for someone is absolutely unthinkable for a finn who has grown in a middle class neighborhood

The night time grill lines are traditionally the official battle grounds in Finland. One grill even arranges the Grill Fighting Finnish Championships. The contestants are expected to cut in line, talk big and demonstrate general aggressive drunken attitude. A commercial about the subject: "Banned Oulu city commercial"

I guess by Finland standards and Helsinki, Kontula is the hood. I have a few friends, who are poor Finnish born. They been mugged several times over there. Only good thing is guns and ammo meant to inflict the maximum damage (hollow points etc) are much less common then in the USA. But not any worst then a typical working class neighborhood in New York or Chicago. Ive been to Kondula a few times, it does have a ethnic vibe to it, reminds me of NYC, LA or Chicago. Last time, they had a street concert in Kondula.... Reminded me of the ethnic areas in big city usa.

Funfact in 6:36 theres a little park with strange statues over to the left of you in which I almost got stabbed by a guy high as a kite. Its the only dangerous moment I've had in my 20 years of living there. So no, not necessarily the most dangerous place in finland, but it is somewhat unsafe, more so for women.

    • @lex6637
      @lex6637 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Also forgot to mention the forest trail close by is currently under some investigation as apparently some guy is walking there trying to provoke dogs and stuff currently. A few weeks ago, this guy allegedly kicked a dog to death. Only targets women with small dogs tho. An R-Kioski at the fork in the road down Kontulankaari had been robbed so many times they sold the place because all the cashiers refused to work there in fear of their safety.
The area is mainly only unsafe because some people that frequent it or live in it are really weird. Theres only maybe like a 10% chance youll run into someone with actual evil intentions, most are just drunk or high.

The bad neighborhoods in finland usually mean "there are many immigrants and substance users there"
Of course socio-economic problems are overrepresented in areas where there are proportionally more immigrants, alcoholics, drug users and others of less fortune but that doesn't mean those places are even remotely no-go zones
The reality however is that you're not going to have to fear for your life even if those places are kinda ghetto

Most robberies and violent crime happens at 12-4am, when people are drunk and leaving pubs and nightclubs. Usually near or in public transport, buses, metro, train stations etc. I don't know what time this was around, probably earlier in the evening since there were a lot of people walking around, so it's not entirely accurate. Try going to an ATM at 3 am, this is a very typical place to get robbed.

I actually wonder if the experience differs depending on how you look, you seem like a decently burly fellow but if realistically someone would get mugged I think the muggers would choose a smaller target like a woman or a lankier guy. :shrugs:

You did a perfect job at looking as unappealing to criminals as you could. You're a quite big dude, you didn't have any expensive-looking clothes on. If you mind your business nothing will happen, pretty much same thing in any country. Finland is safe, kontula may be a little bit unsafe, but theres so many more "dangerous" places in Finland.

My grandma and grandpa used to live on the other side from metro station in Kontula. To me Kontula reminds me of cozy childhood memories. Playing in the wwI fortifications on the rocks or on the playgrounds with all sort of folks. A lot of immigrants there already back in the early 00s but as kids you don't really think suchs things, you don't even need a language to play around. The side where you were walking had some of my great aunts living. All of them moved there in 1960s when Kontula was just being built. One of them still lives there at the age of 87! The metrostation itself reminds me of the "metrochappel." Not sure if its still there but to me that place brings just memories of Pentecostalism christianity! So, to me it always sounds really funny when people speak about that area as some dangerous place to look out for. The metro station has it's fair share of people with substance problems for sure and it would be horrible to live in an apartment next to people with "no care" attitude but mostly it's pretty chill.

The most dangerous thing in the whole Finland is the ice at winter. It's constantly trying to end your life. Perhaps Helsinki railway station at weekend nights. But I would still go there if needed.

Helsinki was worst after the war. In central Helsinki in the 1950 and 60s, there was a street called Rööperi Katu. Where you can really can be mugged back in the days. They made a movie about it.

Why would anybody attack/steal somebody recording? Then you have evidence against. Also it's usually woman who feel more vulnerable in certain areas than men.
I have no idea if Kontula is as bad as people say but those are just couple of observations I thought of 😃

Sometimes I ride my ebike to Kontula and when it's warm gypsy drug dealers and their clients spend time around Metro entrance but they have never bothered me. Near the mall is a place called mäyrä-baari (badger bar) where some alcholics and drug users gather. Police has made some raids and arrested African and Middle-Eastern drug dealers. 25 years ago Kontula mall was better, very few migrants but now it starts to look like a Bazaar.

I've always assumed the bunnies (for kids) is a European thing, like teddy bears in the U.S. My stepmother is German, and when my half-sister and brother were born the bunnies were everywhere. It looked like Easter all the time. They spend half their time in Germany and used to bring back chocolate bunnies for me.

Our media agencies and some politicians want to portray Kontula as a really bad place but mostly its just another dormant part of the city. The same media agencies and politicians keep on telling how people get stabbed in the Central Railway Station of Helsinki and I haven't really felt threatened there either. Mostly those places are exactly as bad as they were decades ago.
It might be that situation is getting worse and I don't see something that is bubbling underneath and most certainly we always need to work on keeping our society safe for everyone but so far I'm not really concerned about us sliding into that what I read from media about what is happening in certain parts of Stockholm.
Be nice to other people. Treat other people like you would like to be treated. Work on achieving good enough safety nets in society and you are likely to have less problems and crime in society. Understand that these things most definitely don't mean communism. These mean healthy society that strives to improve itself and human condition.

Of course, it is no comparison to Detroit. But for Finland, the aura of the place looks already very unpleasant. And hey did have a ton of immigrants from Arab and African countries during th past years, which deliver a sort of criminality and disturbing, agitated behaviour that simply wasn't known in Finland before that. I'm from Germany, and when I went there with my little camper, my aunt was really worried. The overall atmosphere has changed a lot.
