  • Nairobi Kenya, May 2022,
As I embarked on my first volunteer trip completely on my own, I would come to realize the amazing possibilities and friendships, more like family, I would meet along the way.
I woke up one day in March and decided to just say YES. Little did I know what that decision would later discover.
It uncovered an endless love for a country I knew little about, but upon leaving, knew so much.
I remember the first thing the head teacher told me at the school I would be teaching at, she said "Learn as much from the kids as they learn from you."
I didn't quite understand what that meant in the beginning, but I soon began to realize what she was saying.
As I began to teach my class of 6 graders, I soon realized how different we were, but also the same. I began to learn their backgrounds, their struggles, successes, interests, likes and dislikes.
I learned what the school means to them and what the school is struggling with.
As a society, growing up in the United States, we don't realize how lucky and fortunate we are to grow up with the education and resources we have.
Kenya has opened my eyes to a new way of looking at how the world revolves and how each person might not be as fortunate as you.
For that, I say Asante Sana Nitarudi.
