Yep if you lived through it he was a phenomenon. Looking back through YT at his work, it still looks impressive now. Imagine us 30+ years ago seeing it for the first time. There was no one like him before or since. Check out any of his award ceremonies on YT he got standing ovations every time. Much missed.

MJ had some of the best creative talent in the music industry on his team helping him create the music MJ was famous for. MJ grew up in show business from a early age. MJ developed many skills along the way from a business perspective and talented skills.

Ya'll gotta remember this is 1988 and Michael is doing this performance at The Grammy Awards so this performance is in front of his peers and at the end look at the astonishment on their faces because they can't believe the performance Michael Jackson just put on display. It had never been done at that magnitude before at the Grammys and since then all Artist put on their best performance at the Grammys.
Could you imagine watching this performance live and being like this guy's doing this for real? I don't care what anyone says about him there's never been anything like this or like him when it came to music.

I think MJ has been overrated too much. Well, he was an exceptional entertainer, but he didn't create everything on his own, there is also a lot of praise for Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien. At that time Prince, who was not beaten from his childhood to the Supperstar, was an independent all-rounder. Prince's music was in all respects more expressive and funky than that of MJ.
