Thank you so much for this video. after 2 years we just had our first pair visiting and they followed exactly what you were saying about the male crouching when the female arrives.
Fascinating, the one I am now assuming is the female in my nest box is even more scruffy than this, she appears to have dark patches on her cheeks where the other is pristine.
It very obvious egg laying must take it toll ! If she's sitting in the nest cup or making the nest, or even siting on eggs she is the female :) Thanks a million for watching 👍😁
Fabulous thanks so much! I recently had to move, back in January, but for the first time I have a communal garden. A neighbour put up a nesting box and I've been watching the blue tits since I first started seeing them. I couldn't quite figure out whether they were nesting in there earlier on or just checking it out because sometimes I didn't seem to see them for ages. It's May now though and they're in and out like yoyo's! They are so busy all day, they don't seem to go far from the box, they fly to the garden feeders and back to the box but I have seen them going in with what looks like feathers and things like that, and handing stuff to each other through the hole. I think they're amazing, along with the other birds we get too they are a real joy to watch. The trouble is it's difficult to work because I want to see what they're up to every five minutes 😂
Great video mate, super interesting! I've been watching and photographing birds my whole life and never knew about this nesting behaviour. Found you through your man Jordan in Vancouver! Keep it up mate
My friend at school and me were playing a matching game with bird cards. I saw this bird at the bottom of the deck and fell in love with the bird amd laughed. He found the male blue tit and i grabbed it for a match. He said " they are so hard to find that's why they are so cute" I almost died laughing 😭👌
Lovely hearing you talk about the 'shuffle'. My partner wrote me a (fiddle) tune called the 'blue tit shuffle' after we'd enjoyed following our camera-enabled nest box I made. Often have a rooster over the winter. Prolific pooper which my partner tells me must have been the male! No worries though; 8 eggs and 6 hatched yesterday. Cheers.
Hi Richard Clare, sorry for missing your comment 😥 I use the hd cameras from greenfeathers Thansk so much for watching be sure to look in at this year's activity :)
We have had two successful years now with bluetits nesting and in 2019 we had 11 eggs hatch and leave. Last year we had to cork the box off as we were having a new roof. Please can you tell me though which camera you are using as its a much better quality picture than ours. Thanks for the awesome video.
Glad your enjoying :) 11 fledged that's a good year!!! I'm using the greenfeathers wifi camera for this one 👍😁 lovely camera app can be frustrating tho ! Be sure to follow this year's aswell 🙏😁 dunno if they will fledge 11, but hopefully some 😅
@@FionnODonoghue Ha ha it was a tremendous turn out.We absolutely loved watching them in the mornings before going to work. We had 9 eggs in 2018 but only 7 hatched then. Out of the eleven one of the chicks wasn't quite as developed as the other ten and was rather scrawney and still displayed the white head tufts throughout. We named her "Flossey" and she was the last to leave the box. She dropped like a stone bless her, so we took her in and fed her mashed up egg yolk & milk and she was strong enough to fly the length of the living room after two days. We reluctantly had to place her in our Camelia tree outside and the other bluetits were going mad calling to her. We never saw her again after that but sure she would have made it x
Hello 😁 nope they nest in any cavity they can find really :) check my latest video out where I find a natural nest site of some blue tits in an oak tree :) ..(about 5 mins in 😁) th-cam.com/video/HicnQU5tgIk/w-d-xo.html
We've a pair of blie tits nesting in our wall.. unfortunately the cat has managed to have one. Absolutely gutted as my little girl is really invested in them. A couple of chicks have hatched and we can partially see into the nest and those two chicks came upto the entrance and have died in the nest. The remaining tit is still visiting the nest. Would this ne happening if there are no living chicks and hiw can i tell which parent is left 🤷🏻♂️ also should i try to remove the two dead chicks as they arent throwing them out as I'd expect

Haha there antics do be amusing to watch alright, and being distracted from work by them is a very relatable problem ! Thanks for watching !

Cheers Joe ! Glad you enjoyed ! Will do :)

Amazing !! Great to hear !
Thanks, this is so informative! I too have a nest box and observed the submissive, nest swap behaviour from a male blue tit for the first time today 🙂
Really glad you enjoyed 😁, Its a sure sign of spring 🙌
I guess its the female who makes the final decision on whether the nest box is suitable to move into?
I always think so anyway :) thanks for watching be sure to check out this year's nest box series 😁👍
For me, The big difference between them is that the male BT has a black vertical stripe on his belly.
Exactly, It is far more dominant in the male !
scruffy: she just had a bath
Beautiful birds
What time of year is it on the video

The female is duller in colour also.. but yes you can definitely tell by the behaviour also.. thanks great video and commentary. 😊✌
That is very true ! Thanks for watching 😁🙏
I read the scruffy look is due to a feather molt
Could very possibly be :)
I just watched 2021 nest box season waiting for more to come now bing watching 2020🇨🇦❤️
Glad you enjoyed !
great video, what camera do you use...

Hiya Do bluetits only nest in actual nest boxes ? Or do they nest in trees too?
