I learned a lot of stuff today on this Matt's Off Road Video. Matt mentioning Carl Sagan struck a bell in my mind. I had forgotten Carl and a google search brought him up with Johnny Carson and several other articles that I had long forgotten. Matt can be very educational. Also watching this episode I discovered 2 more things. Kaulin is so good in front of the camera. He is certainly wise beyond his years and when he tells us something it is usually very good. They really "click" with each other. I also hope Jake, Colby and Kaitlyn stay around for a long time. This channel has lot's a turnovers in staff, but this present group really works. Matt goes out of his way to inform the driver that you CANNOT "right foot" the brake. Seems to me you could still "double foot" when you need to AND right foot when you want. Hi, Ed. Don't feel bad about the guy hitting your truck in the side. I had someone do that to me many years ago. The truck in front of me pulled off to the right side of the road and stopped. His tail lights, turn signals, and brake lights were so dim you could barely see them in the dark. This happened during the middle of the day. He decided to turn in the driveway on the left as I was going past him. He said he did not see me. If he had cleaned his mirrors, he would have. He scraped the side of the van I was driving, just like your truck. It was just minor damage and no one was hurt. I am glad to see you are okay. Your truck could be replaced, but you cannot. Stay safe.
@scottcampbell4678 , I was under the same impression. However, both the vehicle being passed and on coming traffic are required to yield to passing traffic. This is because the passing vehicle is hung out in no-mans land. I had a co-worker turning left (same as Ed's case) when a car passing (in a no passing lane to boot) hit him. He was charged with not yielding the right of way. Now I guess this could vary state to state or cop to cop, but we looked up the law and yep that's what it said. Before you make a turn you must make sure the way is clear in both directions.
I never fail to be amazed how educated and well-read Matt is. That is NOT common in the towing industry. I'll bet you dollars for cow-cookies he's THE most erudite and eloquent towing company owner in the whole of the United States.
Matt I like the old school. But please everyone do not do it with computer controlled vehicles, a surge when disconnecting or reconnecting may send a surge and wipe the control unit out. There is another old school to try. With the vehicle running touch a screwdriver to rear alternator bearing, if it is charging it will create a magnetic charge. I used to rebuild alternators, starters and generators.
Depending on the vehicle removing a battery cable while the alternator is turning can destroy the diodes inside the alternator. Grab a multimeter and check the voltage of the battery with the engine off. Then check the voltage with the engine running. The voltage with the engine running should be a little higher. A good alternator should be making around fourteen volts.
I remember teachers like that. That thought public humiliation was a good way to teach kids. But its sweet when you can get them back. My 5th grade teacher pronounced both "s's" in Des Moines. Boy, did proving her wrong feel good!
Rod ends in bending was a big no-no when I competed in FSAE during my university days. They can't handle transverse loads at all. The threads snap pretty easily.
The exact quote from Dr. Sagan was 'If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe' meaning you have to start at the beginning. Also, NASA used metric to land on the moon, the computer converted it into imperial for the astronauts but the engineering and the computations were in metric. After all, Von Braun and his crew were German.
The problem isn't the imperial system. It's when you have to use a mix of both. The Gimli glider is the great example of a unit conversion screw up. I'm a Canadian and you all might not realize that we experience the same hassle with measurements as the US does. But I don't like working with fractions, and since 1mm is between a 1/16 and a 1/32 of an inch, that's more than enough accuracy for me. Canadians are not 100% metric. While we use Celsius to measure temperature, we still use Fahrenheit to set oven temperatures, for example.
Imperial vs Metric. Tired of this argument. Metric is more thought out and easier to use. But when your whole dang nation is rounded off to imperial, you would rather break your own fingers than convert. Its that easy. The only thing worse than either one is both at once.
I think of Ed the same way I think of Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty…. Totally diff kind of men, totally diff personalities, but LOVE THEM BOTH!! So heartwarming to watch the way that Matt & crew help him along! Very easy to tell how much Ed appreciates it also!! Merry Christmas to all, and I saw where someone had requested a video about Ed’s life, and what a WONDERFUL idea!!
I have to agree with the nay sayers on the buggy. "Over building" still is iffy to finish Baja 1000. Maybe the Hurricane 24, but never the Baja 1000 in that jalopy. That thing was built for sand. Rock a tillo would kill it. Been there, done it.
To add to the Lincoln Log trauma story. My dad, a child of the 1930s, received a Lincoln Log set at a community Christmas Event (probably the only gift he was getting that Christmas). At the same event, some big headed kid got a hat.. which didn’t fit his big head. So the adults took the Lincoln Log set from my dad, gave it to the other kid, and gave my dad the hat. He told that story into his 80s.
Happy birthday Kaulin 🎉 It is so rewarding that you guys take time out to take extra good care of Ed. It's the same thing I do for my father in law. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the first official run of the 6x6 with all the equipment mounted properly.🤠
Matt, NEVER pull the battery cable on an alternator!!!!! You are right, that was old school, on generators you can do that but with an alternator there is a very good chance the spike you get when you pull the cable will fry the regulator or diodes.
This might get buried but when i was in pre-school i was playing with Lincoln Logs and I made a basic catapult like a see saw (one fulcrum point and a log on top of it). I loaded it up with a smaller Lincoln Log and slammed that bad boy down so hard that It came up and hit me in my forehead and it split it open. I had to go to the urgent care and get 2 stitches. So I too have an embarrassing story in pre-school or Kindergarten every time Lincoln Logs are mentioned. Big fan yall, keep up the good work. Matt you're a legend.
🤣 I'm sensing an emerging pattern here, similar to what happened with the Bombi: - "We're gonna be working on the spud truck" - (side-shenanigans ensue) - (some last-minute panic grind ends up pushing the spud truck out of the way and takes all the time) I can't complain about the side-shenanigans in this video, though, because I always love seeing Ed.

I got the opportunity to visit the yard last month. Matt was very busy shooting video so I did not get to actually meet him, but I did get to meet and talk to Ed for a while. Such a great guy..
26:00 Hey Matt, did you know that the "Alabama native" Wernher von Braun and his team who made it possible for NASA to put someone on the moon, did use metric and when they were done, converted it so that manufacturers and astronauts could keep using the colonial measurements you guys are so fond of? And they even used precious cpu power in the modules so that measurings would be converted for the astronauts. (You don't want to have them think too much in times of stress, so let them use what they are used to even if it makes less sense) I had a good laugh at the scene in "the right stuff" where the old american figure in the shade asks "are their germans better than ours?" (when the russians seemed ahead in the space game)
Hey, bub - did you know that nobody in the US gives a damn what measuring system you use, or what you think is better? 🤷♂️ WE. DON’T. CARE. Please return the same courtesy and mind your own business.
Hey Matt, That buggy was built like a sand dune play toy. On the Baja, that car is a death trap ! For the Baja you need to build your pre runner as good as your race car is built. It does not have to be as fast as the race vehicle but it must be as strong ! Pre running is not as much about learning the course as it is, testing your equipment ! You have learned a lot about building tough vehicles for the area you work and play in at low speeds. Imagine you are driving in that same area at a hundred plus miles per hour stopping for nothing. That is what the Baja is like ! I am not trying to discourage you. I myself have not run the Baja, nor have I ever wanted to. But I have helped to build and worked on cars built for the Baja as well black top and dirt circle tracks. I have worked on cars that could not finish the Baja because they were under built. I am far from an expert. I am just offering some advice about machines that people have built and the people who will drive them. Now a word about human endurance for the baja. via your videos I have seen you do some recoveries that just about kicked your butt. Now imagine non stop hour after hour of that stuff. You ready for that ? Work Safe, Be Well Enjoy
You're offering words of wisdom! Their efforts at prepping for a race such as the Baja 1000 are very laid back. Perhaps they are not planning on actually racing in the official Baja1000 but some related adventure?
Good video, seeing Ed get his hands dirty, shows he's still got it! When some things are broken if your healthy enough to fix it, you fix it! I've read some of the comments and I have to agree, it would be good video to see of Eds life tastefully done of course! Catch you on the next. ✌️ 😊
I really hope for the full on BAJA corvair that you guys do it right and build a true race chassis. I really think a collab with someone like Robbie Gordon or Blake Wilkey would be awesome on the design and prep of the chassis. (Like Wilkey's Jaws, where they got most of the chassis and chassis jig CNC cut.) It would take your build (and dream of racing BAJA) to a totally new level. You could easily make it a series, like golden nugget, with collabs on various aspects of it, the engine, painting, transmission, coolers, drivelines, etc. Your team could focus on the welding of the chassis to keep the old school feel of the channel where you do your own building that everyone loves.
sawzall cutting the cakes. 🥳 reminds me of a pig roast, couple hours in and a leg moved over hanging up on the spit. only thing there to cut the bone without getting burnt and pulling it off was my sawzall, which I just used the day before cutting 4" cast iron sewer line. 🤣 scrubbed, scrubbed and scrubbed some more before using it. lesson learned to be more prepared, of course that was over 20 years ago.

Robby Layton needs to come down to fix that door for Ed. I think the b-pillar got moved a little bit. I know that those Dakotas still has a good amount of life in it. Those LA block based engines can get lots of miles to them. It looks like Robby is just too busy with that build.

12:34 if you have some thick wall pipe, you could weld it on the outside and gain all the lost material back + extra strength in the part. And it could be done in style. Take the pipe, imagine it's inside a box and cut it diagonally. Then you have two halves to weld on the two holders.
That alternator test was for old "generators" not the newer alternators. That test on newer cars and trucks "could" damage the alternator or even the ECU. Voltage on some newer cars can be controlled by the ECU. Not a good test. Use a volt meter or a battery/alternator test box used at the brick and mortar parts or repair stores.
On a truck that age it’s very unlikely to hurt anything, but yes on anything modern, it’s not a great idea. A battery tester or multimeter is very cheap and easy to use

I picked up the street pic a few weeks ago, and if you want a lightweight, comfortable defense knife, I highly suggest it. The only thing I've done to it was run it across my strop. It was not needed when I received it. That's something I do to all my knives.
Hey Matt, would be good if you could put those front points on the chassis in double shear, spherical bearing in particular are really hard on things in single shear
It might be interesting for Matt to know that in soviet times Ukraine there used to be a car, ZAZ-966, that was modeled after Corvair. It kinda looks like a mini Corvair.
Good job Kaulin knowing that bushing self centers ... i know guys twice your age that wouldn't know that and would end up trying to spread out the bracket
The spud truck is going to be mostly for side-by-side recoveries, and tourist/rental season is pretty much over for 2024. I expect to see them working more on the Bombi and preparing for Baja over the next few months. Once they have the engine back they'll have a lot more to do on the spud truck. They need the Banana back up and running worse than they need the 6x6 right now.
Well, it’s good that you at least did one recovery on a Sunday show. I know Sundays are building shows and not recovery shows. But it’s good that you did a recovery keeps a lot of people happy.
Lol. Hush. Common practice to check and see if alternator is making charge is to disconnect the battery while the motor is running. Electricity has to have a load.

They might be better off just buying a better platform for a pre runner. Toyota Tacoma? Just seems a lot of trouble for low reliability.
Hey Matt, where do all the dads store their dad jokes?
On a dadabase 😝
It really warms my heart to see how well ALL y'all take care of Ed!
@ 12:15 he's like lightning with that hammer, never strikes twice in the same place.
I think he is wishing it would keep still so he could hit it. At least we'd have got a funny one liner if it was Rhett with the hammer.
Happy birthday Kaulin 🎉
It is so rewarding that you guys take time out to take extra good care of Ed.
These Sunday shop uploads are the BEST!!
🤣 I'm sensing an emerging pattern here, similar to what happened with the Bombi:
- "We're gonna be working on the spud truck"
- (side-shenanigans ensue)
- (some last-minute panic grind ends up pushing the spud truck out of the way and takes all the time)
I can't complain about the side-shenanigans in this video, though, because I always love seeing Ed.
Good Dog Peanut.
l met Carl Sagan at a 'Cosmos' book signing when l was a kid. lt remains my favorite book lve ever read 50 years later. Highly recommended reading for all to create a better world.
It's like a panther in the Serengeti😂😂 things Coby says makes my day
I liked that. He's pretty good value, and does a mean edit.
haha... loved the crow joke, as a finnish person i never understood why they were called "murder" - for us english as 4th language people
it makes no sense.
Finally i know :-) cheers matt
I have to admit, I liked the crow joke!
I don't get it
That's a solid joke
I got the opportunity to visit the yard last month. Matt was very busy shooting video so I did not get to actually meet him, but I did get to meet and talk to Ed for a while. Such a great guy..
26:00 Hey Matt, did you know that the "Alabama native" Wernher von Braun and his team who made it possible for NASA to put someone on the moon, did use metric and when they were done, converted it so that manufacturers and astronauts could keep using the colonial measurements you guys are so fond of?
And they even used precious cpu power in the modules so that measurings would be converted for the astronauts.
(You don't want to have them think too much in times of stress, so let them use what they are used to even if it makes less sense)
I had a good laugh at the scene in "the right stuff" where the old american figure in the shade asks "are their germans better than ours?" (when the russians seemed ahead in the space game)
Hey, bub - did you know that nobody in the US gives a damn what measuring system you use, or what you think is better? 🤷♂️ WE. DON’T. CARE. Please return the same courtesy and mind your own business.
The love you guys show for Ed is amazing!! It worms my heart. He a an amazing guy.
Hey Matt,
That buggy was built like a sand dune play toy.
Work Safe, Be Well
Enjoy
You're offering words of wisdom! Their efforts at prepping for a race such as the Baja 1000 are very laid back. Perhaps they are not planning on actually racing in the official Baja1000 but some related adventure?
Good video, seeing Ed get his hands dirty, shows he's still got it! When some things are broken if your healthy enough to fix it, you fix it! I've read some of the comments and I have to agree, it would be good video to see of Eds life tastefully done of course! Catch you on the next. ✌️ 😊
Matt, removing the batt cable while running is really hard on the voltage regulator and that one is in the ecu.
Yeah, a voltmeter is pretty simple to use and no worries about frying the regulator.
Jake is a gift to the channel....behind the comic is a person with a heart of gold.
Love how you all take care of Ed!
Peanut is the best doggo. She is smart and always ready for a kiss or giving kisses.
sawzall cutting the cakes. 🥳
reminds me of a pig roast, couple hours in and a leg moved over hanging up on the spit. only thing there to cut the bone without getting burnt and pulling it off was my sawzall, which I just used the day before cutting 4" cast iron sewer line. 🤣 scrubbed, scrubbed and scrubbed some more before using it. lesson learned to be more prepared, of course that was over 20 years ago.

So Wise , Thank You for the Ed sightings . a fine example of team Work in action. Fun and Adventure was had by All , And MEAt for the Frezer
If you want to make a spud truck, first you have to plant the spuds. I think the "spuds" in this equation are broken side by sides.
Don't worry, their customers do that all the time. If you plant them nose first into the sand they're ready for picking in no time
Ed is such a treasure. It's pretty fun to watch a video when he's around doing stuff. MORE ED!!!!!
Did you know crows drank at home before the crowbar was invented?
Good morning! Thank you for a great video! I think there's a lot of us that would like to hear story time with Ed. He's been an important piece of the beginning of the channel, and it would be great to hear his story.
Why does a chicken coupe only have 2 doors? If it had any more it would be a chicken sedan! 😂👍
Hi Matt
I have a similar memory of humiliation at school by a teacher …
But remember…
The teacher is still stuck in school whilst we are doing cool stuff that we love !!!
Makes it all seem OK !
P.S.
Just gotta love ED !!!
30:58 "It's like a panther on the Serengeti"
Nice easter egg there by Kolby, since the Crown Vic is on Ford's "Panther" platform.
I doubt he knew that though.
Robby Layton needs to come down to fix that door for Ed. I think the b-pillar got moved a little bit. I know that those Dakotas still has a good amount of life in it. Those LA block based engines can get lots of miles to them. It looks like Robby is just too busy with that build.
Good to see Ed turning wrenches. You guys help keep him young and going. He didn't appear too happy about the door not fitting right. You have a great crew. Always enjoyable to watch.
Good to see Ed helping out.
Great day with everyone pitching in.
A bartender says "We don't serve faster than light particles in here!" A Tachyon walks into a bar.
Chuckle. Thanks for Probable Caws dad-joke. It'll probably be years before I get to whip that one out when someone tries to stump me with, "murder of crows"... but I'm armed now. Thanks for all the interesting projects, family and lighthearted content. It's appreciated.
I love how you all take care of Ed and let him still be independent. He is amazing.😊😊😊😊
Matt loves to let others drive his rigs, with so much invested in them, that is a rarity, such a great mentor and friend!!
The show was 11% better with Tom (and less mistakes).
Have had several mechanics and auto parts guys tell me the same thing. Disconnecting the batterg while running can damage t.he ECU.
edit. I love old school. I'm 68. LOL
On a truck that age it’s very unlikely to hurt anything, but yes on anything modern, it’s not a great idea. A battery tester or multimeter is very cheap and easy to use
Matt over here casually dropping my FAVORITE Carl Sagan quote, that I put in like 6/10 presentations at work, when I do my lectures to the new-bros about how our Infrastructure works
What do you call two crows on a fence ? Attempted murder
😂
I can't remember what the joke with "a wake" was, but that was a good one too.
😂😂
I picked up the street pic a few weeks ago, and if you want a lightweight, comfortable defense knife, I highly suggest it. The only thing I've done to it was run it across my strop. It was not needed when I received it. That's something I do to all my knives.
Hey Matt, would be good if you could put those front points on the chassis in double shear, spherical bearing in particular are really hard on things in single shear
Honestly your sunday videos are what make my week. You have the best team and honestly you all are an inspiration. thank you.
I hope you are going to replace the Wrecker winch line Matt!
It’s good seeing you bring Ed in to get his project worked on
It might be interesting for Matt to know that in soviet times Ukraine there used to be a car, ZAZ-966, that was modeled after Corvair. It kinda looks like a mini Corvair.
Good job Kaulin knowing that bushing self centers ... i know guys twice your age that wouldn't know that and would end up trying to spread out the bracket
Happy Birthday Kaulin!
Hey Matt, Laura Farms has said in one of her latest videos that she is looking forward to being invited to the Off Road Games for 2025.
8:00 - Probable Caws 😂😂😂😂 I’m gonna find somebody to tell that joke today
Told it to my wife over FaceTime she hung up on me lmfao
@@kevinlappan323sounds like a good joke hahahaha it made it better after I told my mom cause I made a loud “CAW” noise to accompany the punchline 😂
Two of my kids love it my wife and the other three kids hate it 😅
If you haven’t already it would be awesome to see a t-shirt with the hood of the wrecker viewed from inside. It’s almost a Mona Lisa smile. 😊
Nearly everything but the spud truck
The spud truck is going to be mostly for side-by-side recoveries, and tourist/rental season is pretty much over for 2024. I expect to see them working more on the Bombi and preparing for Baja over the next few months. Once they have the engine back they'll have a lot more to do on the spud truck.
They need the Banana back up and running worse than they need the 6x6 right now.
Yeah, I was excited to see some progress on the spud truck. Nope. Another video about everything else that's going on.
Well, it’s good that you at least did one recovery on a Sunday show. I know Sundays are building shows and not recovery shows. But it’s good that you did a recovery keeps a lot of people happy.
Baja has always been a “Bucket List” for me. Never raced but have watched a bunch everything Baja. BEEF that baby up. Great video.
21:44 we all are, Matt. Gladly you are doing what you want in the meanwhile 🎉
Watching from KENYA 🇰🇪 EAST AFRICA love your videos very much.
I think I'll go for that gal in their team 😂 Her smile is infectious
@@eliudwambugu5185 dude!! Kindly delete this comment. Objectifying a lady doesn't work in other cultures as it does here.
Never disconnect battery terminals when a vehicle is running and reconnect them, that is an excellent way of frying the computer.
that lil welder is so cool
That old Dodge Dakota still has a long life ahead of it. Might be a little beat up now but it still sounds really good.
If a group of crows is called a "murder", what is a single crow called? ... "attempted murder" :)
Matt you should really sneak Ed's truck up to Robby Laytons, and have him fix Ed's truck up right and stencil Doggy Door on the back panel 😊
never pull the battery wires while its running, that is a good way to blow the new alternator
Lmao! That’s not how that works
Why, it builds up energy in the flux capacitor?
Lol. Hush. Common practice to check and see if alternator is making charge is to disconnect the battery while the motor is running. Electricity has to have a load.
"Like a panther in the Serengeti" really got me! Well done Kolby!
“Do you need a hug?” Good one Kaulin.
Kaulin has mastered the art of a claw hammer and plastic handled chisel. Excellent
