roast the tomatillos, peppers, onions and garlic whole then peel the peppers, I seed them usually. blend it all with salt, lots of lime juice and cilantro.
Don’t chop before you “grill” grill the tomatillos untill they change color untill theyre a bit toasted on the side and the same for jalapeños, 2 garlic cloves, some onion - blend for a few seconds then add some cilantro & bit water to consistency you like • thanks for the video
Awe some video. we really like the tomatillos. In Indonesia, tomatillos are smaller, when ripe they are orange. it tastes sweet and sour. I will be happy and grateful if I get a new type of seed from Growing The Home Garden.

It's very possible it is a type of caterpillar. I've found a few army worms around our tomatoes. A spray with bt nay do the trick. It is an organic bacterial harmless to animals and people but deadly to caterpillars.
I accidentally ended up with a tomatillo plant. I only have 1 and it is setting fruit. The first one is busting out the husk now. I do have tomatoe plants close, not sure if that is what is used to pollinate or not. Curious to she how it tastes, still trying to decide what to do with it.
Hey Dave I had read to pick the tomatillos when they are about ready to fall off and when skins are papery, is that true? My tomatillos are a yellow gold color and are now about falling off is that ok?
I am also planting the first time black tomatillos...so my question is they are greenish yellow..should I wait for them to turn black??..thankyou for video
I'm growing tomatillos for the first time this year. They appear to be doing well, but are far from splitting their husks and frosts will be coming any time in the next month. Is there anything to do if you run out of time if frost hits before tomatillos are fully ripe?
You could try transplanting to a large pot and bringing indoors or put a covering over them on the frost days and nights. I would opt to put a covering of some kind over it and give them time to grow.
I was just wondering what variety you were growing. Because those are a lot larger than other brands that I've seen Grown. Thank you I appreciate it reply
Thanks for sharing your video!! I'm surprised my tomatillo plants are back from last year. They're growing like yours. Do u have any natural ideas for pests!! I've been using cinnamon. I saw it on Pinterest I.think?? Also I love a good salsa Verde but this year I decided since I get so many I'm gonna dehydrate them then crush them into a powder and as I need green tomatillo sauce add some to water... Similar to any dehydrated tomato sauce. I guess. I haven't tried it yet!! One more think you can cook any kind of meat and veggies, onions etc and slice raw tomatillos and throw them in you dish for a beautiful yummy tangy flavor!!
For natural pest control it really depends on what is targeting your plants. In general a Bt is good for fighting off things that eat the leaves. It's a bacteria that when they consume it poisons them from the inside. Bees and pollinators aren't effected since they don't eat the leaves. Neem oil is natural and can be used to fend off fungal diseases. I used that this year along the stem of our squash plants and held off the squash vine borers. Cinnamon is an antifungal that can be used over soil to eliminate fungal gnats since it takes away their food source. The list of natural pest control can get quite long!
My tomatillos are being attacked mercilessly by spidermites. I use these to make a Colorado style Green Chili that is fantastic. But The florida heat and humidty makes these not last very long. Second set getting ready to go in. Using isopropyl alcohol and diatomaceous earth spray to try to eliminate spidermites
Insecticidal soaps usually work well against spider mites. Neem oil may help. You would need to apply every 3 days to make sure you completely interrupt the spider mite life cycle.
I have tomatillos this year and it's gone crazy with husk. But no big fruit yet. Still little guys inside. I have frost coming and I'd like to give these guys a fighting chance. The plant is still flowering. Should I prune it back to let it focus on what's there now? I would have to prune it back quite a bit. Any thoughts?
I would give it a light trim and perhaps pick off any flowers blooming to transfer energy to the fruit. Also you may want to consider a little covering of some kind for the first couple frosts and see it you can help it last a little longer. Here in TN we often will get a frost then have a couple weeks of good weather without a frost. So if you can make it past that you can still harvest a little. I'm not sure where you are though so your weather patterns may be different.
You mentioned you have two that were growing close, how close would you say is too close to have them grow well? Naturally 2 that are just a couple inches apart of the 8 I have planted are growing the best. Thanks and great video!
Ideally the plants should be 18 inches to 2 feet apart. I will say though that the plants did fine last year as close as they were. The produced a ton of tomatillos, more than we could use!
Don’t chop before roasting. Roast whole with hatch chilis, Anaheim peps, jalapenos and poblanos. Also a cool trick is to roast some romas. Like 90-95% tomatillo then a small amount or romas that will give your salsa depth and a touch of color. When done roasting put into a container and wrap with plastic wrap to let the peppers steep for as long as you can, 20-40 minutes this helps the skin pealing process. Also roasting garlic and a mixture of red and white onions doesn’t hurt. Add red wine vinager, sugar, salt, cilantro and lime juice. Enjoy!!
Awesome video. Thank you! I’m hoping to harvest some of my first tomatillos soon. Do you know roughly how long it usually take for a husk-formed tiny tomatillos to a fully ripe one? Also, I love your channel profile picture of the flower that has pink petals, such a beautiful flower, what is it called please? :)
I'm sure it varies depending on growing conditions but it seemed like a just couple weeks feom flower to fruit. I may not be remembering accurately as they were so loaded it was hard to track.
Sorry about that! One of the challenges I always had with filming was the neighbors mowing their yards. It seemed like every time I went to video a mower came out. We're in a new location now with fewer neighbors that are more spread out so hopefully that will be better!
No worries still learned alot just didnt know if it was in my head or if my room had a echo my dogs noticed it right away then i picked up on it, thanks for sharing your info!
I live in Japan and have been growing tomatillos on a small farm I have here for many years. Here in Japan, we have a major rainy season, so farmers here cover their tomatoes to keep the rain off of their tomatoes. Since tomatillos are related to the tomato family, do they need to be sheltered from too much rain? Also, much of my tomatillo fruit is no bigger than a large cherry tomato. When I lived in California, my tomatillos were always as big as a medium sized tomato. How can I improve the size of my tomatillos? How should I fertilize? Should I trim back tomatillos like I do with tomatoes to improve crop volume and quality? I would appreciate any advice anyone has. By the way, summer weather in Japan is very hot and quite humid. Not sure if that contributes to tomatillo size.
According to my mother there are different varieties of tomatillos. Some grow big and some stay small. Her favorite are the variety that stays small because they are less acidic than the larger ones. I would research varieties and find out which type you're growing.
How long after you start getting flowers do you start getting fruit Because mine right now has tons of flowers but no fruit has started yet I have 6 plants together
I have mine in a 5 litre pot and the plant started to get flowers when it was still in a 200g double cream pot and about 30cm high. Now it is in the 5 litre pot, I'd say it has about a dozen flowers at least.
I have two tomatillos next to each other with tons of cross pollination between them (I see the bees going back and forth) and nothing... the flowers are all there, but not fruit. I really hope they do soon. The tomatoes right next to them are setting fruit and ripening... so I'm starting to wonder if I'm just not getting any tomatillos this year. Sad times.
@@Growingthehomegarden oh wow!! Yes, it has been very hot and it’s rained a lot this summer. So much so that many of my tomatoes are dropping some of their blossoms.
I have also had good luck with tomatillos.........easy for me to grow region 7a/b...........we have lots of fruit but yours are bigger fruits than I have
They may have some carry over in uses like in Salsa verde but I really don't see them as interchangeable. I really like a good tomato on a sandwich but I don't see myself putting a tomatillo on one. ;)
I came across some at a Mexican grocery store here in Texas. They had tomatillos that had the outer leaves removed. I couldn't decide if they were green tomatoes or tomatillos, so I bought some and fried them up like green tomatoes. They were very good, in fact they have more meat than tomatoes.
Unfortunately hornworms like tomatillos just as well as tomatoes. I'm sorry that happened! Plant basil nearby if you can. I find that basil acts to disguise the plants a little from pests.
My tomatillo's have somehow spread ALL OVER my yard! I grew some plants last year and this year they are all volunteers. Nature is pretty amazing
Wow, what an awesome "problem" to have! I see lots of salsa verde in your future!
@@Growingthehomegarden that was the first thing I learned how to can! I really can't wait!
I do have tomatillos in my garden. Love to mix it to our salad. Thank you for sharing
Whatever variety of tomatillo this is, is massive. Mine are probably a little larger than a golf ball. Cool video!
Thanks Sean! I'm not sure how they got so large. I think it's the variety but also they were planted where a compost bin used to be.
roast the tomatillos, peppers, onions and garlic whole then peel the peppers, I seed them usually. blend it all with salt, lots of lime juice and cilantro.
That sounds delicious!
Wow! I really needed this video of information!
I looking forward to growing Tomatillos this year! Looks just like growing a tomato plant. Im excited about growing these.
Very much like tomatoes except even easier!
Don’t chop before you “grill” grill the tomatillos untill they change color untill theyre a bit toasted on the side and the same for jalapeños, 2 garlic cloves, some onion - blend for a few seconds then add some cilantro & bit water to consistency you like • thanks for the video
The southwestern palette is awesome.
Adventitious roots? Nice...

Ground cherries?

Thanks how many plants do you have and how high and wide are they hard to tell as there is only close ups. Thank you

do you prune the bottom branches at all?
It's a good idea to. Same as tomatoes or peppers.
I am also planting the first time black tomatillos...so my question is they are greenish yellow..should I wait for them to turn black??..thankyou for video
I was kind of hoping to grow these or cherry tomatoes on my porch. Looks tasty
Yeah I heard Tomatillo's taste changes when they are cooked VS raw!

Try the smaller tomatillos, the "tomatillo milpero" purpel tomatillo, it much more tastier 😋
Curious what seed you used. I'm trying some Tamayo R hybrid this year. Supposed to be very large and don't require cross-pollination.
I believe they were just a Tomatillo verde from Baker Creek Heirloom seed. No special variety. They turned out well though!
How was the salsa verde?

You have to plant several to matillo's tomatoes They have to cross-pollinate, unlike a regular tomato plant.
what variety are those tomatillos? i'm growing toma verde and they aren't this large or as green.
I believe Rio Grande Verde, but they are growing in a spot that used to be a compost bin, so they may essentially have been on steroids!
What seeds did you use or did you grow from started plants?
If I remember right these were Verde tomatillos from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed.

What makes those tiny holes on the leaves?
The most likely culprits are flea beetles.
