Welcome to Sohyang's world. :) This is my favourite song of hers.
She was actually sick during this performance. Sohyang does her own arrangments & one of the things she is known for is her ability to take a song,rearrange it & make it her own. If you think this performance was a feat of endurance,wait til you see her performance of 'everyone' ,again from the 'immortal songs' series, 7.5 minutes of pure class, a complete vocal lesson in one song.
Hard to believe she was sick during this performance... The queen has many many followers that enjoy her uncanny angelic voice instrument to soothe us during these duress times! I think many people mentioned this performance. Before this performance she was in the hospital because she has Pneumonia. Doctor told her don't talk but she decided went to stage because her fans were waiting for her.
We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

This was not one of her better performances but her Epic rendition of “ everyone” is far from screaming. And many more are high pitched but not screaming. I do prefer her best and closest friend “ Park Kiyoung” Voice because her vibrato is a tad richer. Listen to Park Kiyoung” rendition of “ Nella Fantasia” and you might find it incredible.

@@prestonfranco9594 If she is nothing but a screamer and a disgrace, why did Michael Bolton himself call her performance of "Lean on Me" a 'virtuoso' and invite her to tour with him? Why did SONY offer her an international recording contract last year (which she turned down several time because she does not seek fame or fortune)? Why is she one of the very few female singers to have a "Star" rating alongside Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce, etc.? Why do expert, knowledgeable vocal teachers (not the run of the mill "vocal coaches") like Roberto Delli Carri (master teacher of vocal coaches), John Henny (John Henny Vocal Studio) who is published and has taught professionals, Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice), Recao Imediata, Hannah Bayles, etc. etc. say that she is one of the best singers today (and some say of all time)? Finally, Shane Filan of Westlife (who sings this song) in this video gives her a standing ovation, and loved her rendition.
By the way, I am American too and have a right to speak (have no idea why you say this)!

Sohyang is from South Korea and amazing singer. She is a devoted Christian and gospel singer. She is a cancer survivor and she easily infected with pneumonia. She was sick for this performance and doctor advised her not to sing but she did carry it on.

She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world.But She wasn't known as well as popular because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 43years old. .She has so many legendary live performances .
She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention...

It's one of her legendary performances, but it's a performance that feels more emotional than her vocal technique. If you see her other performance, you'll be even more surprised by her incredible vocal technique.
Sohyang was asked in an interview as to which is the most difficult song for her to sing. Well, it was Everyone, and the reason was the "breathing" rhythm of the song. Surprisingly, she did not say that it was the intensity, the length of the song, nor that amount of belting required.

So hyang one of my favorite female vocalists. Her performance of “ everyone” is beyond amazing. Far better than “ you raise me up”
But I have a request that you react to her closest and best friend, “Park Ki Young”, I like Park Ki Young because they have about the same vocal range but Park Ki Young is a tad more versatile and can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz flamenco, and classical ( opera). A few of my favorites that are worthy of reacting to: ( either privately or publicly)

I want to suggest to u another high level singer, "Hua Chenyu", check him ob Singer 2018, same show that Dimash started to be famous, check the song " Qi tian", u will definetly be surprised, definetly! Reactors get a lot surprised too with the performance " Fake Monk" or "Nunchucks".

lifetime with those many illnesses..
uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up
She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol
It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be
in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician
and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.
Hi Gabbsi, glad that you decided to react to one of the greatest singers on this planet today (not just her fans, but also by knowledgeable vocal teachers/coaches. She is the queen of the mixed voice , belting, and vowel modification.; she has near flawless technique while singing with great emotion. Glad you appreciate her performance; each of them are mini-masterpieces. I suggest 1) Bridge Over Trouble Water and 2) "Everyone"- the performance that many of her fans think is one of her greatest. *Please find the one with English subtitles which will make her performance most poignant.

Thanks for this reaction. You got the main characteristics by mentioning "passionate" and "great rendition". Considering her doctors didn't consent for this performance, as she was recovering from pneumonia I think, she gave this one for the audience and Shane Fillan who was an honorary guest on that episode.
She is a unique artist, soulful performer, a true antistar, commited to truth and conveying feelings with her singing and arranging and writing songs.

The fact she had pneumonia at that time and still gave this performance just shows how incredible she is.
Sohyang did self all arrangements of her songs,she teaches music at an university,she is 43 and a cancer-survivor. "I have nothing" she sang better and higher than Whitney, "I will always love you"she sang the saxophone part. "Power of love, "Arirang Alone"OMG !!

After this performance, she has been inactive for about two years, and she started again from last year.
