A Short Antenna On 80m With The Mad Dog Coil.

- Getting on 80m is not always easy given the antenna length requirements, but with a coil you can use a much shorter wire or telescopic whip. Here I test the Mad Dog Coil from Australia, which works really well and is well built. Note that the uSDX is performing surprisingly well too with this antenna and less than 5W!

nice to see you back on youtube 😊
Thanks! 😊
One little point on your video, the bottom terminal at the mounting bolt ISN'T for connecting counterpoise wires, you connect the loading wire to it to bypass the BNC connector. It might work for a counterpoise aswell, but the primary purpose is as I mentioned. Watch Marty's video's on the use of his coils for multiple bands, clearly presented, friendly and well made, showing setup and use of all the coils he makes. I have the 80m and a 17.5 foot telescopic whip, it easily tunes 80m - 10m, with all bands in between on the one antenna, depending on how long the whip is. BEST investment in an antenna I have made in a long time.
Thanks, my bad!
@@RadioPrepper NOT a criticism, just pointing out one feature of the coil you missed. You can use a secondary coax connection if your not a fan of BNC and their built in looseness of contact.
Thanks for the coil review. I purchased a TR USDX after your earlier reviews. Great little radio!
Excellent presentation. Thank you.
Thanks for video Gill.
Love your channel Gill !
Thanks for the video. I was looking at the Wolf River coil, but their website is rather poor and the prices steep, so I was considering building my own coil. The Mad Dog is very affordable and is a well thought out design, so I just purchased one.
How are you liking it?
I use Yaesu radios so I've recently been using the ATAS 120 for portable operation. It's good on tuning and transmit but not too hot on receive, which is what one would expect with so little metal in the air. Antennas are like alchemy:) Nice to see you again Gil. Have missed you on YT.
Thanks Martin!
Go the mad dog coil!!!! hello Gill !!73 from vk2
Chameleon just came out with the _SS25_ whip, which is *25 FEET* (7.63 meters) long. I wonder how that would work with the _Mad Dog Coil?_ I would think it would increase the _radiation resistance_ and thus the _efficiency_ of the overall antenna system. You could use a little less coil inductance for a given frequency.
My only concern would be the leverage of the longer whip and whether the coil body could handle it.
I like the idea of _Mad Dog Coils._ He showed people how to build one themselves, and only commercialized the design due to demand. Of course, the design of the _JPC-12_ coil is nice, too, but it doesn’t cover 80 meters. (And doesn't come in my preferred _3/8"x24_ thread.)

Unfortunately Chameleon no longer sends me antennas since I criticised one of theirs...
Nice 80m antenna 😊
Always thought of using the irrigation tube for making one of these coils but it only seems to be available in Australia...so I might buy one of the coils complete. On another subject, I was in Antibes weekend before last and I had contemplated taking a radio and arranging a "sked"...but I was hand luggage only and didn't have space for a Baofeng! 73 Gil, G1YJY.
Call me ahead next time 😀

I had the same issue with mine, all I had to do was reset by turning off the G90 Hold down the function key and then turn it back on and you'll see a screen that says reset on the left you'll see yes and on the right you'll see no press the yes and everything will work or should work😁
Thanks, I'll try that!
Hello Gil, long time follower, recent subscriber (not a fan of gmail/google… prepper/privacy mentality but I signed up all the same).
Wanted to say hi from one BNC fan to another. I always enjoy your content and glad to see you back!
Your laid back style and concise yet engaging presentation is a pleasure to watch. I tend to doze off when watching Julian’s videos (great voice / videos a bit lengthy) but this old geezer manages to stay engaged to the end with your videos :oD
Hope you get your G90 sorted.
I have one and a TX-500 and am trying to get them legally registered here in Japan. Pain in the bureaucratic butt with special firmware, paperwork and testing but I’m not the type to give up.
73s,
John
Thank you John 😊 the G90 might not be the culprit... It seems my antenna analyser might be off by a wide margin and the G90 might have been cutting power to protect the finals...
You are welcome!
Random thought. The G90 can sweep SWR out of band so next time you’re out on air if you tune to either the upper or lower limit of the band and set the SWR step to its maximum you should be able to see where the dip is if it’s not in band.
Don’t forget to disable the ATU!
Oh… maybe when you’re on your boat and not in a policed spectrum jurisdiction.
Ideas are great till you commit them to paper 🙄
Great tip, thanks!
$42 dollars shipping to the USA, plus tax.... Ill buy the Wolf River Coils thank you! so basically over $180..... NO!
That short coil looks more like a Buddipole coil for 40 - 10 meters. I have the Buddipole Deluxe although I rarely use it, and it has the same coil clips. The Mad Dog coil looks similar to the Wolf River Coils and REZ coils. I wonder if the Mad Dog coil can handle 100 watts. People have said that the Wolf River Coils coil melts when it gets too hot. 73 KD5YOU
It looks like it would but see the manufacturer's info. I don't own a 100W radio, 20W max...
Good video
Oh good....Another adjustable base loaded vertical antenna the same as all of the others!
True
But being from VK land, it also doubles as protection from our wildlife
Looks really well made. Hope your G 90 is OK. Thanks Gille for your great content.
Thanks, it might have been the antenna analyser, and the G90 cutting power to save the finals..
Not quite. Unlike the others, this one allows for multiple coils and to connect a longer wire so it can be used to base load a longer wire vertical for 40/80m.
Thanks 👍
ty
Thanks Gil for your video. I hope you get your G90 sorted. I find my G90 solid but my mic connector is playing up a bit. Cheers, Marty VK4KC
Thanks Marty. The culprit might have been ny antenna analyzer... The G90 was cutting power to protect the finals. BTW I will make another video with your coil..
Thank-you Gil. Just a clarification ..... one collar comes with the coil. Additional collars can be purchased at a small cost. I am working on an add on coil that is placed between the 80 metre coil and the whip that will provide tuning on top band 160M. Still performing tests at the moment.
Merci pour cette nouvelle vidéo Gil. 👍👍 73 de Normandie. Jacky 14FRS119
Question? everything in a house is already grounded by law of electrical code so what exactly is emp shield doing if its already grounded ?
The chassis are grounded, not the actual "hot" wires..
Not too much QRM with the electrified train track in the background ? Pas trop de QRM avec la voie Marseille-Nice électifiée derrière ? 73 d'Aix en Provence.
Not bad indeed..
Chile why don’t you try a balloon antenna on the beach with an end fed
I have thought about it! Still on my list..
Is there a supplier in France?
No.
Thanks, I see they are Australian so they can probably ship to the EU.
They shipped it to me so yes 😀
