    It’s easily one of the top three best sequels in the series, if not the slasher genre as a whole. I’ve grown up on horror movies, especially slashers and this feels like a love letter to the genre

      You nailed it. I enjoyed Kills, but prefer 2018 a bit more due to the suspense - that sequence where Laurie is going room to room looking for Michael - unbelievable! The whole theater was on the edge of its seat. Kills didn't have such tension (maybe briefly when Michael stalked Lindsey). Hoping that Ends will be a great conclusion to the story.

      Idk what I want from Ends, but maybe one of those Bloodrayne/Midsommar/The Witch type of endings where the woman does something effed up to come out on top, and then the realization of the power she has sinks in and she laughs with triumph and relief. (Well Rayne didn't laugh but she took a moment to take in her accomplishment .)

    However, when Hawkins says “he’s a 6 year old
    Boy with the strength of a man” Isn’t he just saying that Michael’s mentality hasn’t shifted from age 6.
    Basically, He’s still a 6 year old child, he’s been the same since that night in 1963. Except now, he’s a man who has the strength to cause some damage.
    I don’t think he was saying that at age 6, Michael was as physically strong as a man.

    This trilogy so far is all about trauma. H18 shows us how the trauma of an event can be passed down from generation to generation. Kills shows us how the trauma impacts the community, and the obsession it can create in the survivors. The survivors group (Tommy, Lindsey, Lonnie, and Marion) all felt at various points that they had to be the ones to personally end Michael. Tommy explicitly tells us this, while with Lonnie it is demonstrated by his decision to go into the house alone. Even Laurie and Officer Hawkins thought that they were the ones destined to end it. Laurie says in the end, this obsession is what gives Michael his strength. I can't wait to see if Ends carries on this through line. I have no clue which direction they will take this next!!

      indeed, fear and trauma are the major stressors.
      Tommy was scared shitless, no matter how uch he tried to hide it. Plus we have the unresolved coverup of Hawkins partner's death. Guilt, Haddonfield's dirty secret gotta come out. So much fallout.
      the Mullanys will be back, probably Marion's husband. They planyed alot of seeds inbetween the carnage. I cant wait!

      1-Cringey dialogue,
      2-Too many Legacy characters with no direction
      3-One-Too-Many subplots that distracts from the main story!
      4-Too many contradictions!
      I can go on and on but I'll stop there! Once I get past all those issues I can certainly watch the movie and enjoy it for what it is. But I love the fact that YOU love this movie because it gives a different perspective! And I can definitely appreciate that! 🙏🏾😉👊🏾🎃🔪

    Okay. You completely nailed everything about why I love this one so much. I came out of the theater high off the fumes and I had a feeling some of the luster might vanish after a few months (much like “Halloween 2018” did). It had the opposite effect. I love it more now and it stands alone as my personal favorite from last year and also my second favorite in the franchise. I loved the risks taken by Green and McBride. The pacing, I feel, is flawless and I love what was done with the characters. Yeah, I wanted a little more from Tommy, but that’s why I ordered the book as a companion piece. I guess part of the divisiveness comes from the fact that the Myers legacy is so massive at this point, there’s simply no way for a new installment to please everyone. Oh well. I’m glad some of us enjoy it for what it is.

    One of my favorite things about being a horror fan is hearing different opinions of things. Even if I don't agree, it's fun to take in another's point of view. Having said that, it is SO SWEET sometimes to have the same feelings on a flick. (or whatever) I dug this movie from the hop. I swear like 3 and a half minutes in, I saw they were going supernatural and started getting hyped for it...I actually thought that was going to be the divide, (I'd already heard the movie split audiences) and I'm still surprised that half the people still don't see or won't acknowledge the supernatural angle they're clearly going for here. I expect we'll get a very interesting reveal about this version of Myers for Halloween Ends. I'm excited to see what their exact plan is!

      Very true.

    • @millyoneyedeaz1350
      @millyoneyedeaz1350 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're not going for a supernatural angle. David Gordon Green has confirmed that already. They went through the trouble of having Michael escape the fire in a very HUMAN way for that very reason. He doesn't teleport, or he would have just done that instead of hide in the gun rack. For that matter he could just Teleport out of the Asylum. Also, a woman lifted a car off her dad due to adrenaline and saved his life, lifting a human with a Halligan bar is alot lighter than that. Far as the damage he survives, plenty humans have survived worse. Look up Alyson Botha for example: she was stabbed 30 times, beaten, throat slit, disemboweled and left for dead. She regained consciousness and made it to the road for help. Today she is a famous author.
      There's a soldier who recently survived being hit by a grenade then shot 27 times.
      A guy here in Philly was shot 20 times and walked himself 2 miles to the hospital. Still alive today.
      That aside, the horse's mouth states, " The suggestion that he is more than a man is a theory that Laurie has,” the director explained. “My own personal concept for Michael, which will carry forward as long as I’m involved, is that he’s capable of spectacular things but not impossible [things]. So I don’t personally see him as supernatural, but I see the element of fear that he’s generated and exacerbated is transcending the immediate character and moved on to an entire community.”
      It appears that Michael Myers isn’t immortal or supernatural. He’s simply perceived that way by the townspeople due to his incredible resilience....
      Remember folks, the characters in the film are all guessing just like we the audience members are.
      Michael hasn't talked to anyone so nobody including Loomis, Laurie, Hawkins,etc. Know what's going on.
      I hope you guys don't get your hopes up, expecting them to go down a path they keep saying they have no interest in going.

The ending was amazing the best cliffhanger out of the series because it sets rhe tone for where its going in ENDS nobody is safe from michaek he has transcended into a level of becoming unstoppable thats terrifiying to me thats what makes michael scary everyones fear feeds him and attacking him makes him stronger its like well holy shit how do we stop him lol. But killing off karen was sad indeed but it makes sense to where the series is going almost every main character and OG characters were killed off all bets are off in ENDS makes me believe we will get a higher body count in the last chapter including laurie and hawkins as well as lindsay i think they all will die. Kills is incredible i think people will grow to love Kills even more when the final chapter comes out itll help make more sense of everything tieing up the whole story.

    I agree with you on most points. For me the movie gets to much hate for its "stupid" characters and their decisions. We live in a stupid world with stupid people and idiotic chants like "Evil dies tonight". Actually really liked the mob mentality subplot and dont get the hate for it.
    Really loved Karen and Lonnie, really enjoyed Camerons redemption and the way they portrayed Tommy. He might not be the Tommy Doyle we wanted to see, but he's the Tommy this movie needed. Karen's demise hit me. Myers himself is great, JJC might be the best Myers ever.
    I disagree with that Hawkins quote you showed. Think he meant to say that Myers is (still) a 6 year old child in the body of a grown man and the mindset of a predator.
    The only gripe I might have with the movie might be that the dialogues feel a bit too pretentious and they're going a bit too Jason-esque for me with the character of Myers.

    Honestly my favorite aspect of HK other than Myers/the kills/the soundtrack, were Big John and Little John. Even the way the movie introduces BJ with him just smoking and dancing to a Halloween song in his robe made me laugh so hard. Also BJ's actor, Scott MacArthur, was in Danny McBride & DGG's 'Righteous Gemstones' before HK came out and he was great as the main villain in season 1. Im guessing that is how he got the part for HK.
    But other than those reasons, HK just doesnt do it for me, it's the dialogue that turns me off mostly. I would say HK ranks above H20, RZH2, and HR on my Halloween list. Great video as always!

Kills is my second favorite of the series just behind the 1978 original. I absolutely love it. I can't wait for Ends. I can't believe I'm able to say it but James Jude Courtney is my favorite Myers now. He took everything that made Nick Castle's Myers and amped it up, adding his own little nuances to it. Any person that seriously says Halloween Kills is worse than Halloween Resurrection is extremely wrong because Halloween Kills is a terrific Halloween sequel that shows Michael Myers is a relentless supernatural Villain that can’t be defeated, and a terrifying Horror Villain that can be taken seriously because of he kills a high amount of characters in creative ways without any struggle, and because the Mob was unable to defeat
    Michael Myers since he was able attack the mob after standing up.
    Halloween Kills has a consistent dark tone, entertaining scary scenes, multiple likable good characters, etc.
    Halloween Resurrection has an unbelievable inane explanation for why Michael Myers didn’t die in Halloween H20 and why a Paramedic was killed by Laurie.
    Michael Myers can’t be taken seriously including because he walks away after being yelled at by Freddie instead of killing that insufferable main good character, also he is defeated by Freddie in the climax.
    Freddie quickly recovered after being stabbed by Michael Myers because of awful writing.
    Freddie is not a badass hero, and he has a very dumb laughable not badass 1 liner.
    Most of the main good characters are shown to be unlikable characters so you’ll be happy to see Michael Myers violently kill them.

    Solid revisted episode Lee. I think Kills will begin to look better in hindsight when the trilogy is complete. It is looking like Ends will be a much more "tame" movie so I like that we have this wildcard thrown in the series. I still have issues with the back and forth nature of the film and wish certain scenes could have been nurtured more- like Laurie and Tommy meeting again. Still, it is a fun movie and makes me excited to see how DGG raps it up.

  • @davidhelvering
    @davidhelvering 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I was listening to one of your reviews recently while getting ready in the morning, and my wife heard some of it and commented on how positive you were about the movie. I said something like, “Yeah, Lee tends to be annoyingly positive about movies.” Haha Don’t take that personally. You are my favorite horror TH-cam reviewer. Besides, I’d rather you be positive about a movie I dislike than negative about a movie I love.
    With that said, I firmly believe you’ll someday realize what a steaming pile of crap this movie is, though it may take 20 years. People keep saying this movie is brutal, but I just don’t see it. Not one kill felt visceral to me, and too many of the death scenes felt unimaginative. I was bored while watching a lot of it because it lacked tension and imagination. I just don’t see what you see. I would rather watch Busta’s Halloween 50 times before ever watching this one again.
    I did like the sequence that was set in 1978, at least some of it, as well as the scene with Lindsey hiding, and the gay couple. But that wasn’t enough to make up for a really bad movie.
    But hey, I’m in the minority here, and I’m okay with that. I don’t mind people having positive opinions about the movie, and I hope they don’t mind me having a negative opinion.

    • @WA-cl4kn
      @WA-cl4kn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand not liking the movie and totally respect that for the issues it has, but how can you think it’s not brutal? It has the highest body count in the series, the firefighter scene is crazy and ends with a buzz saw to the face spraying blood everywhere, the old couple kill is dark and really drags on with the knives, the car scene has the eye stab, the gay couple armpit stab and eye gouging, Cameron’s kill, and the mob killing is a blood fest. Idk man would really like to know why you think that.

    • @davidhelvering
      @davidhelvering 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WA-cl4kn It has a lot to do with the film’s tone. I don’t vibe with the tone, so things don’t play to me the same way. The firefighter scene plays like a Three Stooges skit. It’s funny, not brutal. Like the way it undercuts the scene’s tension when it briefly cuts to the inside of the helmet. It’s being humorous by referencing a first-person shooter game. And the spraying blood isn’t treated as horrific but funny. It’s excessiveness prompts a smile rather than disgust.
      Then there are the foley effects. Every time someone is hit, stabbed, or whatever, the sound effect sounds like someone punching a saturated sponge. It’s way over the top and not realistic, so it takes me out of the movie. This is the same with Cameron’s death. That scene is funny because it’s trying so hard to be brutal. It’s way too much. Less would have been more. By being so big, it becomes funny. Only I’m not laughing because I want it to be brutal.
      When Michael is repeatedly stabbing the guy in the kitchen (I guess to find the best knife?), the scene is played for laughs. People in my theater chuckled when he kept stabbing the guy. So what could have been brutal was undercut with humor.
      In my opinion, there is a point at which each additional kill starts negatively affecting a slasher. In my opinion, the optimal number of deaths in a slasher is 10, and every kill past 18 decreases the effectiveness of a serious slasher. I base this off my own research. When a slasher goes over 17 kills, the kills start to mean less.
      Another issue I have is that a number of the kills don’t seem natural to me. It’s hard to describe it, but the physical motion of the actors at the moment of the kill doesn’t seem natural. I’m assuming it’s because it’s CGI, but whatever it is, I sense something isn’t right with the scene, so the brutality doesn’t play to me.
      I was taken out of the mob scene by Judy Greer’s dialogue immediately preceding it. While she was talking, I actually said out loud in the theater: “God this is awful.” So at that point, the best kill in the world wasn’t going to play to me in the intended way.
      I am a long-time slasher fan. I love all slashers, even this one to a degree. I don’t care if they’re good. I love the formula, and that’s what I see the film for. I like seeing how each film plays with the formula. When I’m criticizing this film, I’m not speaking as someone who loves slashers. I’m speaking from a more critical viewer.
      For me, HALLOWEEN is different from other slashers. It represents the epitome of what a slasher can be. A lot of that came from the film’s use of tension. John Carpenter understood tension. After two films, I am not convinced David Gordon Green understands how to create tension in the slightest. And that more than anything disappoints me. I expect more from a HALLOWEEN film.
      In fact, this would be a great FRIDAY THE 13TH film. That film series plays with humor in the same way this film does. The Michael we see in this film is more Jason Vorhees than Michael Myers. And I don’t understand why people don’t see that.
      This is not a HALLOWEEN film to me. It doesn’t have the right tone. It undercuts tension with humor, and that’s just not HALLOWEEN’s M.O. (okay, with the exception of Lynda’s death).
      Hope that clarifies things. I get that I’m the outlier here. I wish it played to me correctly, but it doesn’t. Thanks for asking me to explain myself.

    I think the biggest issue with the hospital scene is in the way the characters move on from having killed an innocent person without showing any remorse and just getting past it like it never really happened. Having the characters not learn and actually grow from their mistakes makes the inclusion feel a bit pointless when they just go on to trying to have a plan that doesn’t end up paying off for them

    • @millyoneyedeaz1350
      @millyoneyedeaz1350 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They didn't move on without showing remorse. The exact opposite happened. It didn't need to be drawn out. They stopped chanting and became froze in horror afterwards. Tommy was an avatar for the mob, he personified their anger, confusion, fear and guilt
      "Now he's turning us into monsters"
      And it's definitely handled better than Ben Tramer and Ted Hollister deaths (both caused by Loomis who suffered no consequences for it either)
      People keep forgetting the story isn't over. It's like getting upset at the second verse of a three verse song, saying it's bad music because it's incomplete when that's how it's supposed to be, knowing there's another verse coming to close out the record.
      Then we got people who don't seem to understand how suspense and horror movies work, so they're mad at the characters for behaving like they are supposed to

    Your studio background looks on point man! Love it!
    Fun video and great points.
    I think the biggest reason why people hate on this film is just in the overall film and direction it went.
    In a nutshell they were trying to bake a cake with Kills...... however, they used ingredients for Tacos.
    I don't think hardcore's and long time fans so much aren't open to new ideas, It's more, if you're going to introduce something....then own it and stick the fucking landing!
    Take "Hush" as an example by Mike Flanagan.
    He said himself that was his sequel to Halloween. You can see in every detail that it's a love letter to Halloween, but a completely different character and it kicked ass! And was simple!
    So you can do new ideas and get the same effect, just have the balls to follow your original intent...and yes, fandom is partly at fault for Kills demise. People spoke .....so they delivered a half assed mess.

    Just the fact that John Carpenter is involved, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, and David Gorden Greene as a competent director, I'm unconditional to this trilogy! Awesome!

    This review was so good I watched it twice. I can't agree with you more I don't understand all the hate and the complaint about this movie. Some people said it's the worst movie of 2021 they must be fucking insane. The best scene of the extended cut is when Lonnie saw Michael behind the Bush with the fog I nearly fell off my chair with chill bumps....plus the score in that scene. I remember in the theater when Michael came Out of the gun cabinet in the basement and the theme started I nearly started crying happy tears i got choked up🎃 awesome stuff LEE 🔪🔥

    I love it as much as you. It took the franchise of of the comfort zone, AND gave us the most evil Michael myers.

    Great revisit Lee!!! Except for the inane “evil dies tonight!” chant and some of the hospital stuff (to be fair, the dialogue between Laurie & Hawkins was sweet) I still really like this movie 🎃🔪 also I just watched The Conjuring 3. It was okay. Love Vera and Patrick but the plot was kinda weak.

    I did have a better time with Kills my 2nd watch, but overall I like 2018 better and was looking for more of that vibe. But what you said about middle movies in a trilogy makes sense! Looking forward to Ends 🎃
    PS: Levi's cameo was adorable around 12:58 is adorable 😆

    Hey man, great review, just have a couple thoughts. I also loved H Kills for the record.
    First, I think the statement "he's a 6 year old boy with the strength of a man" refers to the fact that he is mentally still a 6 year old boy. Kind terrifying when you think of him as just a giant mean child.
    But the biggest thing I wanna say is about the other patient. I dont think it is reasonable that anyone could think he was Myers, but I dont think its a flaw, I think it's the whole point. The mob is being stupid, people aren't being reasonable. If Tavoli(sp?) was remotely similar to Myers physically, I think it would undermine the point that this mob has stopped operating within reason.

    I enjoyed this movie way more the second time I watched it, but the hospital scene where the guy commits suicide is still cringy and really hurts the pacing. This could have one of the best openings in any Halloween film 🎃🔪

    I still love Halloween Kills. My mind isn’t changing about that. I like it better than 2018 and it’s pretty much tied for 2nd. I’ve heard the issues and while I agree it isn’t perfect, it’s fun as hell to watch. Even my Dad, who introduced me to Halloween in the ‘80s loved this one.

    Movie has already accomplished 75% of what other Halloween movies failed to do and that was getting Michael right so it is definitely in the top 5 Halloween movies and in recent times the evil dies tonight is very realistic

    5 months later and my thoughts haven't changed either Drumdums. I still love Halloween Kills! For me, it feels like the Halloween movie that I wanted. Loved the Kills, the score, the characters, and how awesome and badass Myers was in this movie. It's my favorite Halloween sequel and I'm not afraid to admit that. For me, a damn near perfect movie!

    This movie did do much right. Michael was perfect, the score was great, kills were brutal. The flashback was done perfectly. My only issue is the cheesy movie dialogue that seems so unnatural.

    I didn't like Kills on first viewing, but then I watched it a second time and my opinion changed. Now I enjoy it very much. It is not by any means a perfect movie, but it does many things very well. The mood is spot on; the pacing is quick; the lighting is perfect; Michael Myers is brutal and scary; the flashback is very cool; it was great to see Lindsay back; the car scene, the escape from the burning house, and the scenes toward the end in the Myers house were really well done; and the score was great. For me, the weakest parts were the entire hospital sequence, the "evil dies tonight" chanting, and the under-use of Laurie (yes, I'm a fan of Laurie Strode). All of that said, I don't understand why some people HATE this movie so much. It was called Halloween Kills for a reason--to show the brutality of Michael Myers and how his rampage is "killing" a community. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Halloween Ends, although I am a bit concerned about the use of the radio tower as being central to the plot. We'll see.....
