But the way the media treated her, as well as her own self-defeating thoughts, just added more to the whole situation that it needed to. She made bronze...that is in itself an accomplishment. I had always wondered why she didnt do the double axell triple toe combo instead and then she could have used the triple toe elsewhere. Triple triple combos are missed about half of the time.

it's too bad she didn't have enough people in her ear just telling her to focus ONLY on doing her best and enjoying it. debi totally gave away a gold medal focusing on the wrong things. it's astonishing how many world champion athletes are so fragile mentally. the one thing that separates the greats from talented also-rans across all sport is having the mental edge.

This is the first interview where I've seen Debi admit she was not ready to win the Olympics. It was a once in a lifetime deal for her, wish she'd taken the year off to train. Today it would be unheard of for an Olympian to do anything else but train. And Katarina, showing her TRUE colors, readily admit she was wishing Debi would FALL in her skate. Any other skater would not even admit to such thoughts, but coming from Witt I'm not the least bit surprised. She's capable of anything.
I don't like Katerina's personality at ALL. She seems arrogant and stuck up. Wishing or even admitting to wishing your competitor will fall is kind of a cruddy thing to admit.
Plus, she is German. Germans tend to be more upfront and direct. It's a cultural idiosyncracy, and totally normal for Germans, while it comes across as too direct/brutal (or bold and honest depending on whether you like it or not) to non-Germans. What she said in this interview is a perfectly normal thing to say for a German, and it seems even a little charming to Germans that she is so honest about this human failing of hers.
Do you seriously believe that her opponents didn't want her to make mistakes or fall? Katarina is at least honest and admits it. Which is a good quality for me. She is not arrogant. Maybe it seems that way sometimes. Anyway, she could afford it. As far as I know, she's still the best runner of all time. I'm German.
It doesn't sound nice, but of course she and everyone else would want to be the best that night, she's at least honest enough to admit what a lot of people would be thinking deep down. Also, she made with the East German government that if she wins in Calgary, they would let her get out of GDR to tour and do whatever she wants, so of course she would want to win. A second olympic gold medal, a chance to achieve what Sonja Henle did, and most importantly, her freedom was on the line
With this comment the basic arrogance of the Ami rabble comes through again. The world hates you for that. But the big time of the Americans is slowly coming to an end. Thank God.

I think the biggest mistake for Debi was not to take a leave of absence from school and completely focus on figure skating.
