That open letter was a one side story loaded with personal feelings, which is really to be expected because Tuomas and Tarja had known each other since they were teenagers. I'm not in a place to say anything about this, only Tuomas himself knows if he had romantic feelings towards Tarja or not. Even if he did, it wouldn't be surprising, because by 2005 they had been colleagues for a decade, and close friends for at least 15 years - cutting out someone THAT significant from one's life will be excruciatingly painful and traumatic.
Tuomas is a brilliant musician and composer, but he definitely had his issues, and sadly his personal issues dragged him into a dark place around that time. I don't blame him, but I do wish that Tuomas had handled this situation a little bit better, more professional, least of all, I feel bad for them, and their friendship ending in such an ugly expulsion.
I do hope they reconcile one day, not necessarily as friends, but at least on speaking terms.

that was a sad outcome of what could have been a great friendship. To me it was obvious he had feelings for her, of course she didnt. As she saud he was quiet and mysterious and that year of the interview 2002 she got married , that must have hurt a lot

Looking at them. They're so cute. Tuomas is right, she radiates charisma. He said it was same at school. It was as if Tarja had some kind of inner glow about her. And all boys were in love with her in one way or another.

They seem to be so happy at this time together....I also saw a video some 2...3 years earlier where they also sit on ground and some horses are walking behind...they look like a couple almost having fun and so warm moment together. I think they still "Feel for You" even though rough issues happened.

I have not known Nightwish very long so I am far from an expert on what happened between the two. One line from Tarja’s song “Enough” basically says she held her tongue when certain things (plural) happened in the band. I’m not sure what she means but I know there was a lot of partying back then. It must have been very hard to deal with being the the only girl in those conditions. Put her husband in the mix and who knows. Everyone tells a different story. I don’t think anyone is totally to blame. The truth often lies in the middle and people are complicated. Even if you were to assign blame to one side, nobody won. They lost their friendship. With Tarja though , she lost 4 and so I feel for her just a little bit more. But she’s had such success with her solo career and she’s happy. Tuomas is married now and Nightwish has obviously been successful. Tarja’s press conference is hard to watch but it’s an interesting way to get her point of view.

Exactly. Tarja was that nice girl from next door who didn't like drinking and fooling around. And she hated cigarette smoke when all the guys were smoking in tour buses and basically everywhere. She also blamed the management didn't take into account her female needs. She really felt a bit outsider amongst all the rocker guys as she said in this interview that she's not a rock lady.

Century Child is an absolutely amazing album. I still prefer it to Once, if only by a little bit. So many beautiful sad songs. Thank you very much for your reaction to this nice interview. I love hearing your thoughts. It's great to have reactors who already know the band and Tarja in her solo.
Looking at it, I wish things would have worked out better between Tuomas and Tarja and they parted for good.
And yes Century child was the first album with Marko.

Thank you for making me watch this interview (I was so nervous to watch it)... it was great. Sweet, too, but shows that they simply do not want the same things; and I think it's telling that Tarja says Tuomas is a mystery. I was wondering how well she understood him, and this suggests that she didn't, not fully. And yes, that's partly because he holds himself back and avoids confrontation and deep conversations, like he says later in Maan Mainiot. But this is very much reinforcing the feeling I get from the lyrics and timing of things - that he was in unrequited love with her. He said he had a shitty year... She got married at the end of 2002, so she must have been deep in that relationship when Tuomas was writing Century Child; she moved away to Germany; and a further piece of turmoil was needing to replace Sami the bassist.
It also reinforces to me that she would have left eventually if they had not fired her. She wanted to make her own musical path - and she has that right, but it is also obviously difficult to accept for Tuomas.
Also, the interviewer was so pointed about that Beauty and Phantom question that he must be lying when he says he does not understand the reason for the theme :D Tuomas is the Beast (he only deflects that slightly by including all the guys! he basically said it!), Tarja is the Beauty. Tuomas is the Phantom, Tarja is Christine, the opera singer that he makes sing for him. It even fits that the Beast gets a happy ending, and the Phantom does not, and it is the later song (this just occurred to me...)
If we are right and he was in unrequited love with her, though - did she know? It seems possible that she didn't, though with the lyrics, it would have had to be strong denial or wilfully ignoring what he was saying in them. Or him deflecting way too hard at every turn except in lyrics, which is very possible. Like he said, he never talks about stuff, even when he should, and avoids direct confrontation at all costs. And if she knew, well, that must have been difficult too - how to reject someone that you don't want to hurt but just aren't in love with.
Sorry, just speculating here. I feel for both of them.

I totally agree with you. I feel like he merely created Nightwish to have a creative outlet for both his passions in life: love of music and love for Tarja. She's the reason he created Nightwish and he has been calling his albums "children" as if they were the offspring of their "couple". I think that almost every song is about her, some times less obviously though.

@@userunknoznEven all the way back to Oceanborn, the way he describes Tarja in the song "Nightquest" is telling enough of how he saw her. "Lead by a maid queen of the night, voice of angels, such a divine sight; an amazon to fight and cure this reality, with her feline lure".
He's not just describing her as a cool singer, "such a divine sight/her feline lure", he's describing her with lust, referencing her physical appeal. He was never exactly subtle about it.

He was infatuated big time, the entire Century Child album centers on her and the depth of his depression from her absence.

Rumors about Tarja leaving came from Kimberly Goss, leader of the Sinergy band. Behind the scenes things happened because Marko was in this band, they were opener for Nightwish during Wishmaster tour and then he joined Nightwish and for a while he was in both bands. Other key guys in the band were Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) and Roope Latvala (joined Children of Bodom later), with whom Marko was on good terms. Kimberly was ambitious and Marko had to choose. So he left Sinergy and Nightwish was his main thing.

@@karadenizin-kizi After Sami was fired and Marko joined, according to the guys, Tarja threatened to leave. I can't say how serious it was, maybe Tuomas talked him around. At that time, these rumors were circulating, not just from Kimberly's message, which came a little later. Finns knew about this but there just wasn't any official news or anything serious about it. Under the surface there was talk about "is Tarja leaving Nightwish?". Those years were lot about message boards, blogs and uncorfirmed rumors.
How serious it really was? I have no idea. Like it has been said many times, Tarja herself, Tuomas and others - their relationship was really intense and we don't talk about anything romantic or like that. They both pushed the band forward like maniacs.

@@ValtteL Oh I see! Interesting. It's hard to really get a picture of what happened, there seems to have been so much going on in so many directions. Like, with Tarja for example I feel like there were.. I don't know, mixed signals, on the one hand she did seem committed to the music and the band, on the other hand as she also said in this interview, it wasn't entirely what she wanted for her own path, especially when it came to her classical training. It feels like she was quite torn, while for Tuomas this band was his everything so I could imagine any indication that someone wasn't entirely committed felt personal because he poured his heart and soul into creating the music. Sometimes I can't tell if he even liked Tarja as a person, or as a singer for that matter, or not, because he said both very nice and also quite mean things about her (at least to my ears). I believe him when he said it wasn't romantic, that's not the vibe I get at all, but it seems to have been complicated and complex, their whole dynamic. Even just in this interview, it's all over the place. It's interesting to watch 🙈

Noticed when Tarja was asked about Marko, having another singer in the band Tarja said well i was away in Germany at that time and Tuomas made that decision and the shittier things happening is what was later written that Tarja wasn't always at practice and was loosing her input in the band This was the beginning of them separating noticed Tarja said when I'm gone as Tuomas said as you see it didn't take much for you to be here from Germany now that we're both here it saves money on tickets like an attack at Tarja that you have no excuse to be here and also Tarja admits she was following a dream before Nightwish and moving to Germany meant she can continue her studies. this interview reveals a lot. pretty sure the "shittier things happening" was among other things Sami being thrown out of the band, and not Tarja "not showing up for practice". Tarja's mother was battling cancer and sadly passed away in 2003 so Tarja feeling like she needed to take control back over her life and figure out what she wants from it and pursuing her studies more intensely again and getting married quickly makes a lot of sense. She herself later admitted that she threw herself into work, juggling both the band as well as her studies, to help her get through that loss.

If you were a fan and followed the band during Tarja era, you would know that there were never any rumours or indications of a romantic feelings between Tuomas and Tarja. Well what was first the chikken or the egg? Tuomas never had chances with Tarja because, even before Cabuli, she had other relationships. Just read greetings on Oceanborn, and Wishmaster: she greets a boyfriend and mother in law. So she was in a serious relationship that broke up just before she meets her actual husband.
So there were no rumors because there were no chances for Tuomas. What is a fact is that the way Tuomas fired Tarja was cruel, you can have bad relationship with a bandmate but that doesn't justify so much anger. There must been deeper feelings envolved.

Nobody is elaborating anything. Tarja's husband explicitely said publicly than when he married her, he told Tuomas to give it up, and Tuomas said "no, lol", essentially.
One of the parties directly involved with both Tuomas and Tarja, said that he was in love with her; is not like fans are just hopeless romantics reading too much into it. A person who knows them both in real life, said this. Without mentioning extremely obvious lyrics like "Ever Dream", "Bye Bye Besutiful", and the cover artwork of End of an Era. Also nobody thinks they had a romance.
People think HE had a crush on her, which is a different thing.

I think there is still information you don't know. the press conference that Tarja did after she read the letter is certainly worth listening to. Tarja said in advance that she wanted to leave the band because she wanted to act fairly, she wanted the band to have time to adjust accordingly, she didn't want to leave overnight. Everything was fine until Tarja secretly got married (2002). Tuomas couldn't cope with that, and the fact that he threw her out like that and insulted her out of stupidity was that he wanted to hurt her, he wanted to hurt her and take away all the credit she did for the band. The song Witch hunt is also worth listening to, and another one where she texts with Tuomas, the two of them actually text each other through their songs.
