    Thank you Pastor Baucham. When my husband divorced me my kids kept trying to set me up with men and I told them no not happening. When I became a born-again Christian I looked up these passages and I knew that the Holy Spirit had been speaking to me. I feel very comfortable with my decision. My ex is still living. At this point in time I feel that I will not remarry because Jesus is my husband and truthfully I think He wanted it that way. And though my children really do not understand this because they are Catholic oh, they have come to understand that I am not looking. So thank you for clarifying this because it really does help.

    I’m so glad that I listened to the entire sermon. I have committed adultery long ago, repented and so did my wife. We asked God to forgive us and He actually showed us both together in scripture that He forgave us. We are both saddened of our past BUT we are totally 100% committed to each other and will stay married until DEATH do us part! Real talk,we are both so happy because of the grace that we could never destroy what God has given us. We have a new appreciation for God’s word and His Son, Jesus. It will NEVER be destroyed with divorce!!!!❤
    My mom and dad never married. My mother had many different men. I was blind and now I see!

      You are in a second marriage I can tell by your asking eachother and god for forgiveness. That's not how it works. It says commiteth adultery not implying a one time act. Read the book except for fornication by Daniel jennings. Or remarriage is adultery unless by David pawson. It says in the bible if a man divorces his wife and marries another he commits adultery then it says causes her to commit adultery how can that be if they are divorced? God will forgive your adultery if you repent. It also says that if awoken leaves her husband for another man she shall be called an adultress. Remarriage adultery is continuos

    I have been slowly moving towards this view on theological grounds recently when considering how marriage is a picture of the gospel. If God is OK with divorce and remarriage on grounds of adultery, then every time I commit adultery against Him, that is every time that I sin, He would be Biblically required to divorce me. If Christ were to divorce me due to my many sins I would have no hope. But God has promised that He would keep me for eternity (John 18:9) and not cast me out for my unfaithfulness in my Christian life. This truth absolutely floors me, and it is beautiful to everyone to see that worked out when a married couple can struggle through the most difficult time when one party has strayed and show to the world what true repentance looks like and what God's forgiveness looks like also. I certainly pray that if God does delight to give me a wife, that I never have to deal with this, but that if I do that I can model Christ in His love for me.

      fornication, is the exception, not adultery....the issue is that married couples that stray, dont commit forincation, they commit adultery.

      ​@philipbuckley759 Hey brother, Unfortunately Voddie says that the remarriage is a one time act of adultery which disqualifies his preaching. He's right about the permanence of marriage, but it isn't just an "act of adultery" and IS on-going adultery as long as you remain in the remarriage while your first spouse is still alive. In the KJV it says "committeth adultery", and just like Jesus forgave the woman caught in an act of adultery, Jesus commanded "go and sin no more." Adulterers do not go to heaven if they stay in adultery. Repent or perish. Confess and forsake the sin to be given mercy- Proverbs 28:13. Hebrews 13:4 God will surely judge the fornicators and adulterers. Too bad he does not call people to live holy and alone unless they can reconcile. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11. We live under the Law of Christ, not the law of Moses in Deuteronomy. Blessings and Maranatha.

    I've been divorced for 23 yrs (from age 28). I knew back then i could not remarry, according to God's Word. No one agreed. In fact, i was being encouraged to remarry. I absolutely refuted those who tried (church, family, friends and still do). I wasnt well versed in the Bible, but i knew the strong impression placed on my heart back then and still to this day by God. Paul even warned it was better to remain single (1 Cor 7: 8-9) because he understood how sacred marriage is to God. There is no excuse. I do not want to be part of the "many" spoken of in Matthew 7:13.🙏 God has been so faithful to me - none can compare! ❤

      You are absolutely correct in your belief of marriage/remarriage. Thanku for sharing! Too many “Christian’s “ try to excuse the sin of remarriage while your ex spouse is still alive. It’s adultery. Period. Gid still sees your marriage with your ex. It is not broken . We need to stop justifying sin. We shouldn’t be divorced period. Fight for your families!! Biblical assignment until death.

    I live in a large metropolitan area and can’t find this kind of straight talk preaching anywhere. We need this in every pulpit.
    My ex husband divorced me after 27 years of marriage and married his affair. I have never been at peace about remarriage and now I better understand why.

      Experiencing something similar. Husband divorced me after 28 years for another woman. Heartbreaking and crushing. But I believe God would have me to remain single and see myself as His bride rather than trying to pursue another relationship. This is sound, biblical truths that is difficult to live but His grace will see us through.

      You must check out pastor gino jennings about remarry and divorce. God don't accept divorce. You both bound for life until death. 1corinthians 7 10:11 . Moses granted divorce not God. Like the courts granted. Jesus Christ said fornication. You can put her or him away if they fornicated. Not married yet. Marry people don't fornicate they commit adultery.

    I have never been so filled by the spirit than after hearing this man preach the gospel. The power of the Holy Spirit that resides in this man as well resides in me. All glory to God in His name! I hope to one day sit in the same room with this man as he speaks the gospel. Jesus is the way but He has given Dr. Baucham the blessing of spreading the good news! I’ve longed for gospel centric teaching and I praise God for bringing Dr. Baucham into my life which is now and forever the Lord’s.

    Do you hear this preaching? This Pastor is one of the last remnants of our era to defend this subject with all that faithfulness.     My husband divorced me after our 22 anniversary (2 years ago). He was active in 2 affairs...one with a family "friend"...which I discovered in 2019...and one with my twin sister...which was revealed about 6 months ago.
    I have been in turmoil & travail.
    That betrayal had been ongoing for several years!
    Yet, the Lord protected me & held me in His Everlasting arms of comfort!
    Psalm 25: 4-5 has been my daily cry:
    "Show me Your ways Lord, teach me Your Paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God, my savior, and my hope is in You all day long."
    Every day! Only God can redeem, restore & fix this!
    Thank you for the hope & confidence this message gives in confirmation of how the Holy Spirit has been guiding me! I can rejoice that , even in the pain, (Psalm 23)...He leads me in paths of righteousness (right standing with Him) for His name's sake!

    I really appreciate the way he's presented.
    But what I got out of it, is how serious marriage is. And we should do everything we possibly can to keep the marriage vow. I never looked at it that way and how serious it really is to God and it should be to us.

    The problem with that is, there are those mates, that wanted there marriage to the other person. And it hurts them to see them with the other person. It just hurts. The other person should return because the other person loves them and they still hurt. Hopefully God heals my hurts or send my wife back home. I know she forgiven, but it does not remove the hurt and the work I put in for 26 years. I wanted my marriage and still do. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    Please pray for my marriage of 9 years last week. We have been dealing with abandonment (me), infidelity (husband), and loss of emotions (both, at times), for almost 4 of those years. We both want to save our marriage or we wouldn't still be here, but I feel I'm more desperate and willing to save us than him. He acts so indifferent and cold, completely distant. I can tell God is working through him but so is Satan. Please pray our marriage will withstand these trials and our family will stay together. In Jesus name. God bless.

      I completely understand and am going through similar situations in my marriage… my wife was fighting for us a couple months ago, when I was living in sin, and now since March, we have switched… divorce has come up… I am following in the Lord and His word, and praying for the Holy Spirit to work in her, me, and our family… we have two beautiful children from God, and I am praying God will protect them and our marriage, and while I wait on God for my wife to turn to Him and back to our marriage, I strive to work out my own salvation and to be the best dad I need to be as well as love my wife. Thank you for sharing, and I’ll be praying for you sister 🙏 keep trusting in Christ

      @@craigrasmussen45 This is exactly what I find myself in as well. I was living in sin, have caused her to lose all hope. When she put up boundaries and separated herself this summer, I woke up. The Lord is doing his work in me. I know the separation is necessary for me to prove genuine repentance and transformation. Change is a process. Scripture is teaching me to become the husband and father God wants me to be. Now the divorce papers are on the table and she's determined to get it finalized. We have two wonderful children. I am in Europe, they are in the US with my wife. Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in her heart. Pray that my family may be protected in this time of turmoil. The trauma I put her through was harsh but our Lord is the God of redemption and restoration. He can reconcile us no matter how broken the marriage appears to be right now. I am committed to obedience to the Lord.

    God bless the hearts of those couples who refuse to listen to compromised preaching. Let us seek God's wisdom and view divorce through the lens of scripture, rather than the head knowledge of some pastors. Sometimes the pulpit becomes defiled.

      The scriptures is the book of pain 😢. But you must love the truth that hurt you. God said you must remain neutral or reconcile if you separated. That's it. Now remarry people must repent come out that second marriage that's unlawful to Jesus Christ. You don't remain in the second marriage. That's a sin. Repent come out of it. Romans 6 1:3. Like a fornicater keep fornicating. You can not have scriptures Contradict itself. Voddie Is wrong on second marriage that's its OK to stay in it. That's not scriptures. Acts 17:30 God said no more excuses. It's only a sin if you remain in the second marriage and the first one is alive. James 4:4. All marriage people that have a second husband or wife and the first one is alive. You must repent come out of it. Don't remain in it. Romans 6 1:3. Like Jesus Christ said I didn't come to bring peace on earth but a sword. Staying in the second marriage and the first wife or husband is alive. That's a Contradiction to Jesus Christ. Narrow is the way. U must remain neutral or reconcile to the first husband or wife. Only death u remarry

    God instituted marriage, and it's remarkable that in the second chapter of Genesis, there's a statement that Jesus later quoted and that Paul references as fundamental. Genesis 1 says, "God made male and female." Genesis 2 states that it's "right for a man to leave his own family, to leave his parents and to cleave to his wife." The word "cleave" is powerful; it signifies being glued to his wife, sticking and staying attached to her for as long as they both shall live. This sets the standard for the relationship between male and female as intended by God: one man married to one woman for life.

    I've not been a good husband at all and my wife is done with me. I always put myself before her and she finally said she can't take it anymore. I understand her. We have a 2 year old son and it's so hard to imagine what he will go through. I'm afraid but I know she deserves to have peace and some happiness and it's not with me. I don't know what to do.

      Ask God to restore you! Humbly go to your wife. Start taking care about f your. Wife and child! Be invested be present! Lay down your desires and ask God to save your covenant with God. Get up! Start healing what’s broken! Stay out of the World and its temptations. No. Learn to love and know your wife regarding she’s cold. She’s hurting . You have a job to do. With God it will heal!! Get up! You are not a victim but a VICTOR!!!🔥💯

    I don’t want to sound like a downer however, I am happy that most of the comments I see people have gotten clarity and happy confirmations to the life that they’re living. Now I however, was not aware of this. I am a divorce man who just got saved with the hopes of finding, and having a chance to be a husband again with the understanding that I have now that I didn’t have before only to find out, I won’t get that chance again and it’s very saddening to be honest

    The greek verb tense used for commit entails continuousness, so it's not just a one time act...it's a continuous act as long as the remarriage persists.

    What happens when a husband has an affair and leaves his wife and marries the affair partner? Should the wife remain single ? She tried to reconcile with him and did not pursue the divorce. What happens to her now?

    But as Christians we are meant to repent of our sins. If two people committed adultery by remarriage after divorce shouldn't they separate in order to end the sin ( as with other sins)?

      Grace to you
      The difference in Ezra chapter 10 and divorce and remarriage in general is God had instructed Israel not to marry Pagan wives. So many men had married pagan wives Israel's sanctification to God had been greatly compromised. So the unusual step of mass divorce was taken in order to reconstitute Israel's consecration to God.
      On the other hand remarriage was not prohibited after divorce was conceded. A woman given a divorce certificate and sent away was allowed to remarry as the law of Deuteronomy 24:1-4 reveals. She was then married to her present husband and bound to him. She was not required to remain perpetually single.
      After the wife was remarried the first husband was not allowed to remarry his ex-wife (v.4). She may have had a penitent heart for what divorced caused her to commit, but she was not required to divorce her current husband. There is no divorcing (or separating) the current marriage for "repentance sake" in God's Word.
      Those who claim so has created a new narrative for interpreting Jesus' teaching on divorce. Be careful not to follow the new narrative. Blessings

    how would leaving an unholy union be a sin? that makes no sense at all. If Christ says to the woman at the well, "the one you have now is not your husband" then wouldn't that mean she should be reconciled to her actual husband? there would be no reconciliation for those in unholy unions

      We don't know if all five husbands had died, but this one was either adultery or fornication if the covenant husband was dead. Hosea was married to a prostitute, and he received her back without divorcing her. Marriage is for life.

    This may be the clearest and most helpful articulation on the subject that I have heard in 50 years. Thank you brother. But I do wonder one thing: When Rom 7:3 says "if, while her husband lives, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress", how can you say "This does not mean that divorced and remarried people are committing new acts of adultery with every instance of marital intimacy" (52:57)?

    The early church fathers taught that remarriage while the other spouse was still alive is adulterous and the believer must exit the adulterous remarriage. This was taught by the vast majority of the church up until a few hundred years ago. Highly recommend the free book called Except for Fornication.

    The problem with that is, there are those mates, that wanted there marriages to the other person. And it hurts them to see them with the other person. It just hurts. The other person should return because the other person loves them and they still hurt. Hopefully God heals my hurts or send my wife back home. I know she’s forgiven, but it does not remove the hurt and the work I put in for 26 years. I wanted my marriage and still do. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Also, what about Luke 16:18? 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

      The Pharisees were the ones who constantly put people back under the mosaic law and you are grasping at straws by trying to exalt Moses over Jesus Christ (Hebrews 3 clears this up )

    Heavy topic, but keep in mind forgiveness is before divorce, forgive first and try to keep the marriage but if your partner continues and doesn't accept forgiveness what can you do but to divorce. The last thing you want is to hear God say yes she/he cheated on you and you divorced she/he and that was your first and immediate response, but have you considered forgiveness as Christ has forgave you before divorce?

      If you don’t care, it’s very probable that you’re not saved to begin with. One who has been born again, has a new heart in which is engraved God’s ordinance, Ezekiel states. They also have the Holy Spirit. These two things produce a new nature, in which what drives them is doing God’s will, in which they no longer go by is this a sin or not, instead they go by” does this glorify God or not”, or “does this glorify God more or does this glorify God more?”. Not out of fear of losing our salvation, but out of gratitude to He that redeemed us, out of love to He that loved us first and out of recognition of who God is, that He os holy and deserving of all glory, worship, praise and obedience. Someone who is born again, isn’t seeking a loophole, to the contrary, someone who is born again, seeks to study deeply and understand God’s Word in these matters, in order to glorify Him.

    I am heart broken. I followed Voddie on every concept so far. So many verses to come to this one. I am so confused. At 52:58 the only thing that can end a marriage is 1. Death of the living spouse or 2. A remarriage ends the first marriage? This is not a Permanence view, it is a waffle cone.

      Exactly! The way ppl are acting is as if Moses' decision to allow divorce and remarriage was unilateral- independent of God.
      Why do we say God is the same yesterday, today and forever, but remove importance from certain scriptures that are eternally relevant?
      Why are Matthew 5:17-18 now not relevant or factored into the way we understand this subject?
      Why are Moses and/or Apostle Paul's sharings about marriage not as relevant now as what Jesus said concerning the topic? Shouldn't all their comments be taken as the entire counsel of God and read together for the full counsel of God?

    I agreed with everything until around the 53-minute mark. It is difficult to talk about it in a TH-cam comment, but the pastor's argumentation here destroys all the base for the permanence view of marriage. Either we take marriage seriously, or we don't. Either marriage is the picture of Christ and the Church, or it isn't.
    And this divorce situation contaminated the church in such a way that there's bloodshed everywhere. It's heartbreaking.

    Voddie Baucham's logic here is flawed. He says it's ok for the 2nd marriage to continue while the original (left behind) spouse is still alive. The marriage covenant is til DEATH do us part. If the original spouse is still alive, the original covenant is still in place...even after one of the original spouses leaves to be in a 2nd marriage. Why would he encourage the 2nd marriage to continue under the guise of not wanting to repeat the sin again? Repentance is supposed to bear fruit. If one is repentant of a sin, how could they REMAIN in that sin? The right thing to do is to END the 2nd marriage. Then, obey 1Corinthians 7:10-11 ~ remain single OR go back to their original spouse. Also, even when God divorced His people in Jeremiah 3:8-10, He called them back to Himself a few verses later in Jeremiah 3:12, 14. God didn't go and get remarried to someone else and live happily ever after. The original people(spouse) were RECONCILED back to Him. Let God be the example to follow.

      My understanding is that the second covenant is still a covenant that, in a broken world, needed to be honored (above the first covenant that was “broken”).

    Hmmm I’m usually one for Voddie’s sermons but I feel that some important things were not addressed when it comes to divorcé considering some people may divorce due to child abuse going on by one of the spouses, physical abuse (which has resulted in the death of men and women that stayed or tried to leave), and so much more. Its easy to say stay and repent and work it out, but that’s ONLY when both parties are willing. You can’t force another adult to do something that they don’t want to do and when the spouse that wanted to stayed and work things out is forced to go through with the divorce, now they are subject to commit another sin that they wanted to avoid by staying and working the marriage out. I’d like to hear his thoughts on people or children experiencing all types of abuse and then staying in a toxic unhealthy situation that could result in death.

      “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.” (Proverbs 13:24, ESV)
      It is unlawful for a woman to divorce at all, seems to be the scriptures. Those children also do not fall under the authority of the mother either but to the father who is the head of the household. She is to be in subjection in all things to her husband.

    I think Voddie is a awesome Bible teacher. But I disagree with him on some points.
    Voddie believes in the ongoing validity of God’s Law (which I do as well)… but didn’t seem to realize that the “porneia” (sexual impurity) mentioned in Matthew 19 refers BACK to the “uncleanness” mentioned in Deuteronomy 24.
    Even in Ephesians Paul says “but fornication (porneia) and all UNCLEANNESS, let it not be named once among you….”
    This indicates that fornication is classified as “uncleanness”. Which is what Deuteronomy 24 is referring to.
    God’s Law which is timeless AND perfect allows for divorce in the special case of sexual sin. (Deuteronomy 24)
    God also divorced Israel for the same thing (adultery/unfaithfulness)… (Jeremiah 3:8; Isaiah 50:1; Hosea 2)
    Also, Christ said “what God has joined together LET NOT man put asunder.”
    He never says that it “cannot” be put asunder, but that it SHOULDNT be put asunder. Which indicates that a marriage CAN be broken apart… even though in most cases it would be wrong to do so.
    But in ANY other case, divorce should not be done. Remarriage coupled with divorce is clearly adultery.
    That’s all Jesus was referring to in Matthew.

    Because divorce is so rampant, Christ's exception clause to the man is now declared to be some loophole for hard-hearted men.
    Prophecy despising pastors think this will curb the increasing divorce rate.
    What will curb the divorce rate, is getting back to the KJV Bible and THEM obeying 1 Timothy 5:20 KJV and 21 and 1 Corinthians 5 KJV in the Real Bible.
    Please stop condemning faithful spouses because you won't do your job, elders and Pastors!

    He had it right and then went downhill at the end 54 minute mark. If you divorce and remarry Jesus calls it adultery all the time! If your remarried your in adultery and should leave. Does God forgive sin we don't repent of? Repent means to turn away from. All in all I support this message as most churches dont teach any of this.

    Remarriage while your original spouse is alive (if you were their original spouse) is adultery. Repentance requires STOPPING THE SIN and SINNING NO MORE - thus getting out of the adulterous remarriage. We would not say a homosexual marriage is okay if they continue to stay married, neither is an adulterous remarriage okay by staying in it.
    This is how God feels about divorce:
    "Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. “For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” '
    Malachi 2:14 - 16 NKJV
    Only the book of Matthew contains the "except for fornication" permission to divorce, as only the book of Matthew was specifically written for the Jews and the Jewish culture understood that this "fornication" meant sexual unfaithfulness in the betrothal/engagement period (not after the marriage was consummated by sexual union between the husband and wife). An example of this is shown where Joseph wanted to DIVORCE the mother of Jesus, Mary, before they had consummated their marriage as it appeared that she had been unfaithful as she was pregnant prior to having sex with Joseph.
    "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together (sexually), she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.     (Jesus speaking) "I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery." - Matthew 19:9 KJV
    Note no fornication clause in the rest of the gospels, because it was specifically written to the gentiles which did not have the strict betrothal customs like the Jews:
    (Jesus speaking) "Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery." - Luke 16:18 KJV
    (Jesus speaking) "And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery." - Mark 10:11 - 12 KJV
    The ONLY permission for remarriage is the death of the original spouse:
    (Paul speaking) "For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man." - Romans 7:2 - 3 KJV
    Lastly, abandonment by a spouse does not allow remarriage to another. You must either reconcile or stay unmarried.
    (Paul speaking) "And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage (to perform the marital duties - this does not allow remarriage) in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?" - 1 Corinthians 7:10 - 16 KJV
    John the Baptist took the divorce and remarriage adultery so serious, that he lost his head over it via decapitation by Herod:
    But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. Because John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” - Mark 6:16 - 18 NKJV
    Of all the laws in the Old Testament, Paul emphasized only four - and abstaining from sexual immorality (which is what remarriage is while your original spouse is alive) is one of them:
    (Paul speaking) "For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell." - Acts 15:28 - 29 NKJV
    Having children in an adulterous remarriage does not make it any less important to exit that adulterous remarriage as shown in Ezra 10 where they the people had to repent (stop being a part of) unlawful marriages, some of which resulted in offspring ("All these had taken pagan wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children."
    Ezra 10:44 NKJV).
    'Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. Be of good courage, and do it. ” Ezra 10:3 - 4 NKJV
    Staying in an adulterous remarriage can take you to hell:

      In Jeremiah 3 God is directly referring to Deuteronomy 24 - it is referring to God putting Israel, His wife, away. And he goes AGAINST Deut. 24 and tells her to come back to Him - even after she then "becomes another man's":
      'They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the Lord .'

      In the SAME chapter, God gives her a bill of DIVORCE:
      "And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also."
      Jeremiah 3:8 KJV
      Still in the same chapter, AFTER God has given her a bill of divorce, He states that he is STILL married to her - the bill of divorce therefore did not nullify their marriage:
      "Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord ; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:"

      Jeremiah 3 shows that God is not following Deuteronomy 24's divorce law - because He does not have a hard heart. That law applied to the Israelites, who had hard hearts, under Moses' leadership.
      Jesus also says that this law in Deuteronomy 24 was given for those under Moses due to their hard hearts. He clearly says that He does not give us that permission - we are not to have hard hearts, but we are to forgive our husbands/wives and wait for them to repent and reconcile with them when they sin against us.
      "He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."

      "Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?       Praise God that He does not divorce us and marry another. When He puts us away or divorces us, He waits for us to repent and reconcile with Him. Praise God that His heart is not hard. Beg God to give you a heart of flesh to forgive your covenant husband/wife, 490 times (seventy times seven times), lest He not forgive you on Judgment Day for your trespasses against Him, which I assure you are much, much greater than 490.
      Divorce with adulterous remarriage is for the hard hearted. Woe to you if you are counted amongst the hard hearted on Judgment Day:
      "But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;"
      Romans 2:5 KJV
      A hard heart is evidence that the Spirit of God is not in that person:
      "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."

God's instruction to Israel was not to marry outside of the 12 tribes of Israel, they realized their sin, and sought a way to correct it. Are you saying then that today if I a non-jew marry a jew we have sinned and should therefore be divorced? Are you saying that because there is precedent for marriages being broken up in the old testament we should now have fresh divorces (which God hates) to correct that error. Are we saying that all Gentiles be circumcised so that we can be seen as true followers of God? Be careful how you use Ezra 10 in this context.
      Im with Voddie on this one the act of remarrying when your spouse is alive is the adultery. After you are married that is a new covenant and therefore not continuous adultery. Repent of the adulterous mistake /choice you made and move forward. I do not believe that repenting always means that a decision can be reversed, or else ppl with children out of wedlock (fornication) will need to get rid of their kids.

      Im Brazilian as well, living in the US, and also hold the permanence view. When he talks about fellowship is in the sense that we don’t stop considering them as Christians. It’s a secondary issue. If your church has the permanence view, you don’t look at other churches that don’t hold the permanence view and say they’re not Christians. Now, in your specific case, you might want to check with the elders of your church to see what is the confession they hold to. I

      If I may, I would refer you to Titus and I believe 1 Timothy as well where Paul gives the standards for men to be pastors. That being said, we are still to treat people we believe are in with love and respect, but it might be something you need to take up with those pastors.
      But as for your main question of why we must take a position, it’s simply because the question will be asked. We can’t just shrug our shoulders on issues that scripture is clear on because of difficulty. It’s not a deal-breaker because if we were to break fellowship with everyone we know has different opinions on Theology or has sinned in some way, we would end up alone within the same day. Since it’s not heresy or blasphemy, it is no reason to stop working with those people in worship. And even in severe cases on divisive issues that get people riled up in a hurry, we still, as mentioned by Peter in 1 Peter and Jesus in the Gospels, treat them with dignity and respect. “Love your neighbor as yourself” doesn’t have an exception for doctrinal disagreement.

      Those who believe the second marriage should end in divorce feel that "they are still married to their first spouse in God's eyes". This view sees divorce and remarriage as if it is ineffective. Thus from their perspective the second marriage is merely an affair that needs to end.
      But in God's Word divorce and remarriage are actual events that changes marital status as in the law of Deuteronomy 24:1-4. So the first marriage actually ended and the second marriage was graciously allowed following the divorce concession Jesus mentions in Matthew 19:8. Therefore the first marriage is former (as stated in the law of Deut. 24) and the second marriage is the current marriage to which the husband and wife are obligated. Another divorce will only result in more unfaithfulness. Blessings

    Where is the grace of God? There is no permanence, permissive view in a “chosen” relationship. Only God’s Grace granting you the right to remarry as the apostle Paul said and as God (not only permitted) to David but granted “permanence” with Bathsheba. The church needs to do away with control.

    Some Churches have made divorce the new unforgivable sin. Like it's set on a pedestal above other sin. Jesus didn't say to the woman caught in adultery, you "have" five husbands, or even "have" one husband.
    He said you have HAD 5 husbands.
    He didn't condemn her, and said go & sin no more.
    I like when Voddie pointed out that God would not have you sin in order to fix a sin. Amen.
    Some pastors/church counsel have directed people get divorced now and go back to their first spouse... That counsel could destroy lives.
    Of course we should honor God in getting married, being married or in choosing divorce. But in scripture God hated certain marriages.
    I dont hear theological speakers cover that subject. I personally believe now that God doesn't honor every marriage.
    Let's say you were an unbeliever~ you got married, the Lord was not in your life or theirs when you married, how is it God honored that marriage & holds you to it now?

Would he say a bank robber who repents of his robbing is then free and sinless on his next bank job?

    It tells me one of two things are true sbout such a man..
    1) they haven't truly studied the whole of the Bible and or believed it.

    Is anyone else listening? Pastor voddie says he is n the permance side. No divorce or remarriage for any reason. But at the beginning and the end he says stay in a second marriage and god will bless it. How's that possible? In the permanace view if you remarry it is adultery. Every time you have sex with the adilultress remarriage. So how does god recognize the second marriage if the first one is permanant? What if the first partner wants reconciliation? Are they stuck being alone? He preaches the permance view but contradicts himself. I don't get it

If remarry is the sin, and Jesus says go and sin no more it defines the act, not the perpetual ( on going) act Which is remarry. He also said that he wouldn’t condemn ( to blame or fault) her, but go and sin (remarry) no more. Because remarry was committing ( the action of) adultery. It’s forgivable. Never to do again. (John 8:3-11)

      @darnellmunerlyn7617 Committeth adultery is ongoing as long as you are having sexual relations with someone not your first spouse. Only death ends the marriage covenant. If a person is going to a hotel and getting a prostitute, you would say he was committing adultery each time he did this against his wife, and to stop committing adultery, he has to stop having sex with another woman. So if divorce does not end the covenant marriage, each time you have sex after divorce it's the same as if you were using a prostitute. God will not be mocked.

    So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
    According to this video, if you have a living spouse, you are only in Adultery at the marriage ceremony or the first time you have sexual relations.
    But, whatever makes it a sin is still in place, it is therefore still a sin.
    You end up with, instead of one committing adultery and maybe can be taught and saved, you end up with a committed adulterer, who now believes their adultery is ok.

    The permanence view actually encourages adultery by removing the punishment for it instituted by Jesus Christ Himself. There are two exception clauses, in Matthew 19:9 and in Matthew chapter five verse 32, and you CANNOT REMOVE THOSE VERSES FROM THE BIBLE. They are there to MAKE CERTAIN THAT MARRAIGES ARE BOTH HOLY AND UNDEFILED. In the Bible days, the penalty for immorality was the death penalty. If the adulterer was stoned to death, the innocent party was not also stoned to death, and would be free to remarry. Adultery is serious business to God, and defiles a marriage. If the adulterer is rewarded for their actions by no penalty for immoral behavior, immoral behavior is encouraged, and accepted as a normal part of a marriage. The unconscionable acceptance of adultery in marriage that is promoted by the permanence doctrine's removal of the exceptions instituted by Jesus Christ Himself are an abomination to God, making a mockery of holiness in marriage by forcing an innocent spouse to "put up with" adultery on the part of a betraying, lying, deceiving, and unfaithful cheating spouse.

      Yes, the self righteous preachers telling an innocent person to stay single while the other spouse just does what he or she wants to do. This mindset is not wisdom. Marriage covenant can be broken. I once had a self righteous mindset regarding marriage and divorce but the Lord opened up understanding. I am going to stand for sound doctrine. Some of these so called preachers mouths need to be stopped teaching error.     Porneia is an umbrella term for anything sexual, which includes adultery. Adultery is the reason God Himself divorced Israel (Jeremiah 3:8). After He divorced Israel, He no longer considered her His wife (Hosea 2:2).

      If the term fornication is in the same sentence as adultery then it’s referring to the term pre-marital sex. Only possible in a betrothal period (Jewish custom)
      Jesus would’ve used the term Mechoia Greek for adultery instead of porneia if he meant you can divorce for adultery. The pharisees were very acquainted with the betrothal it was their culture, a man’s wife was considered his wife at the engagement. (Matthew chapter 1) Mary could’ve been divorced by Joseph for being with child before they were intimate but yet already married in a betrothal. God says he will bring back His WIFE israel and His wife will never be forsaken. They departed but He has not left the covenant otherwise you make God to be a liar, men lie God doesn’t .

    Love the message on marriage, but the notion that you (Voddie) have pushed and promoted on abuse within the marriage is not grounds for divorce, is not acceptable. Clarification on the types of abuse you are referring to is required here. Physical, sexual, emotional and financial abuses. Are these acts of abuse geared towards the spouse or the children. If a parent is involved in sexual abuse towards a child, you Voddie and the entire Church / congregation should be 100% behind the victims and be protecting the victims with all of the resources available. This is the mistake John MacArthur made all of those years ago. Please, provide some clarification on this?

    Wow. I agree with a lot of your teachings, but you threw me off when you admitted to how your church views divorce.
    No divorce under any circumstance? That's really pushing over the line of legalism especially when Jesus already told us what our out was in Matthew 19:9 which i explain later. How do you suggest people in dangerously abusive marriages deal with it? Do you just have them sit in their misfortune until their killed? What about the children that are born in those circumstances? Do you just allow them to possibly go through something no different than the spouse? Do you expect children to succumb to that as well? Abusive partners don't stop at their spouses so in your view you believe everyone under an abusive relationship, including the children should just take it until their killed or so emotionally unstable that they commit suicide, because they believe they have no other way out according to that view. It's absolutely doubtful to believe that God would allow us to be subjected to something as heinous as that without an out. Not to mention the sexual abuse and problems that come with a spouse like that. A lot of these spouses are also adulterous so now this church view is also succumbing these victims to multitudes of sexual diseases including the children who are more than likely sexually abused also.
    So, what then do you do with spouses who eventually kill off their current spouse and moves on to another person since in your view death is the only way out? What happens then with the new spouse who in your view has just acquired another victim? You can't do anything to someone who was able to get out of their marriage through their spouse's suicide, because someone killing themselves doesn't fall on the abuser nor is it a crime they can justly say falls on them when they don't understand or know the dynamics of that marriage. These types of marriages create a cycle of people who grow up in environments like this that are no better than their abusers. In that you are perpetuating and fighting for broken families to stay broken. I feel that you are not clearly seeing how dangerous the other side of this is.
    Also, the word Porneia in the context of Matt 19: 9 is a broad term that includes sexual immorality AND licentiousness which means a disregard of accepted moral rules and standards, lack of moral restraint, dissoluteness and lasciviousness. So basically, anything within the marriage that could violate the marriage vows, not just sexual immorality. And this isn't something that's been done once and was forgiven by the spouse but a constant refusal to good Godly behavior within marriage. In this context, the oaths and vows that people take have already been broken once a spouse turns on their spouses. So in that, how does the permanence view constitute Gods intention for marriage when their vows have already been broken irreparably outside of sexual immorality?
    Regardless, I can't stand behind not being able to divorce under any circumstance. Not just because of the abuse I endured growing up, but because my mother almost tried to kill herself and now faces a multitude of mental health issues because she tried holding onto that farce of a marriage for so long, regardless of how me and my siblings were being treated or even herself. The way of marriage in the beginning was good because it was devoid of sexually immoral practices AND ABUSE in any way. It was a MUTUAL, CONSENTING PARTNERSHIP guided by the love of God. Personally, anything outside of how God created marriage to be between a man and woman morally and sexually shouldn't even be called a marriage. I understand that with sin in the world marriage will never be perfect like God intends it to be, but it definitely shouldn't be so off kilter that someone dies or is changed permanently because of it. My marriage is annoying at times but even i know that i have no reason to divorce my husband over petty things. Then for you to say that the person wanting a divorce is the problem is such a manipulative thing to say to people who may be victims, and not only that this whole view just gives fuel to abusive spouses that live and breathe to hurt their spouses and thrive off the fact that in your view their spouse can never leave them which only perpetuates and inflames the abuse.
    Regardless, the permeance view is dangerous outside good marriages so the blood is on your hands within a congregation if something happens and I hope you can handle the guilt of that.

It is sexual immorality but not during marriage and you know the context jesus was talking to a Jewish audience. It does not say except for a second marriage. It really sounds like you're adding an exception
