that was the best first lesson of any instrument ever posted i have played the bodhran for 20 years and i have never learnt the bone to my shame so thank you.
my wife & I are fan 29,962 and you are by far the best teacher. these little bits of wood are addicting. will enjoy practicing your bone playin wisdom at stop signs in the car...Thank you very much...
Thanks for the video, man. This is what got me into playing them and now I'm starting to build a reputation as a ragtime bones player in Seattle. Keep it up!
Excellent demonstration and instruction. Will there be an episode 2? There is a dearth of videos here with instruction. Yours and Hillar Bergman's are the best. I'd particularly like some instruction into the "drum roll" and inserting quick triplets in the midst of other rhythms. Thanks!!
I forward this video to everyone I know who wants to learn to play the bones. It's a great starter. If you want to see how I've progressed, partly due to this video, check out my channel. Thanks Vash. "Like starting a car." That's what I tell people because of you.
@josefgiven : Stopping the triplets is a function of how much finger pressure you exert with your RING finger. Check out some of my videos... I believe "Rhythm Bones Progress Report #2 -- Bones are Like Salt" discusses this specifically.
Vash-- basic technique question: I'm a very early beginner. When I'm pivoting the wrist back and forth and trying to get that "isolated click" down (starting around 2:25), instead of getting "one and only one click" I get two or three per pivot. Is that 'good' or should I keep focusing on getting the single click down first? Is my grip too loose? Thanks for your video!
+Ben Prudek I know it's been a looong time, but in case anyone else comes along with the same question: keep focusing on getting the one, isolated click. Don't move on until you've pinned this down. It is *the* fundamental motion in bones playing.
Phases of watching this video: Is he wearing a skirt? "well done"?! he's patronising me... A single click? I didn't even know you could... wait... IT'S WORKING!!! ALSO THAT, IT'S WORKING! ZOMG I CAN PLAY THE BONES. Thanks!
Sweaty hands here... anyone else having issues such as the bone closest to the pinky literally flying out of their sweaty fingers? Something tells me I'm in this struggle alone.
Great video and with really good instructions. I would like to offer some constructive advice in no way meant to offend anyone. 1.The camera kept going in and out of focus. This may have been on purpose for an effect, but if not, the best thing to do is not use auto focus. 2.You kept saying very good, which is very positive, but not really useful. Since you can't tell if the person watching is doing it right. Those are tiny comments meant to help, but great work over all.
You are an excellent instructor. For those of us trying to learn spoons and bones, Thank you!!

I don't have any problems doing the triplet roll, but can't *stop* doing the triplets when I speed up.
If the bones are made of different material does it affect the sound pitch?

Also, I'm using buffalo bones (not standard wooden ones)-- will that make a big difference? rib fyi

@v45h0n What is another place, besides the inside of a cow, can I get these bones?
Ace! Are there any more?
At the beginning. Name that tune !
Where can you get "bones"?
Sweaty hands here... anyone else having issues such as the bone closest to the pinky literally flying out of their sweaty fingers? Something tells me I'm in this struggle alone.
Where do the Bones originate from?

And remember boys and girls, while it's important to know WHEN to play the bones, and when NOT to play the bones....heheheheh.
