As a psychology student about to have her first teen client, your videos are super helpful! :) It's great to get some good advice and to have some activites to do if talking fails.
Thank you so much for this comment Kristin. I am uploading a video for tomorrow on talking to teens about anxiety. Let me know what you think. xoxo Quenby
I am a Social Work Intern right now and just had my first teen client. Your activities saved my life! The teen truly enjoy having different options to work on.
Ur technique is so unique! And so inclusive… takes the pressure from someone who is overwhelmed u presence of another adult in the room!! Ur resource section is also amazing!! Great work.. looking frwd to all ur videos 💕
Just came across your channel and am amazed by all the great content! Currently in my MSW program interning with elementary as School Social Worker, I’m forsure gonna use the question cards
I have a feeling I'm the only one here who isn't a therapist or anything like that but is just curious about this stuff, like it's so amazing how there are so many different ways to help someone out without too much stress but more relaxation.
I love that you are not a therapist but still like the videos. I have some general mental health videos that are not geared to therapists too. Thanks! Quenby
Thank you so much. I work as a Counsellor in the UK. I find cards very useful with teens and will look at yours. The tree thing is a great idea and the collage too. Thank you
Thanks so much for the video! We just put our son in therapy...between depression and coming out that he is Bi- sexual. No matter what we love him either way we just want him to be happy!
Thank you for sharing this! I hope he loves his new Therapist and if not fine another one! Did you see my video on helping teens like therapy? Keep me posted xo Quenby
Hi there! I am a psych major and studio art minor quickly approaching my senior year of undergrad! I'm actually considering to receive a certification in art therapy at some point, so this is a huge help to get some thoughts rolling. I am doing an internship this summer and am seeing adolescent clientele. Thanks for all of your suggestions!
Thank you for the video! I love the card idea as an ice breaker. I have a similar game where I have a fancy chart with questions and the teen rolls dice to see which question they get. I work almost exclusively with teens in a high school and another tool I love is my portable white board with several colours of dry erase markers. It allows me to either do some quick art based interventions and psychological education with easy to grasp doodles. Keep making great content. I love it.
Hi! Great video! I'm a student therapist starting to work with teens and have noticed that building a relationship with teens is sometimes quite different than with adults. I love you idea about the questions cards. Would you be open to sharing the list with more of the questions you typically use?
Great fun activities to get students to open up, I love your creativity. I’m not a professional counselor but I volunteer with middle school students. It seems like there’s a rise in depression and anxiety. Part of me thinks it’s a trend (because of celebrities like Billie Ellish) and another part of me thinks it’s seasonal depression. How can I navigate them to understand or have a broader perspective on this being seasonal?
HI Rachel I LOVE this comment from you!! Thank you. YES i'm in CA and I see a rise in Anxiety and suicidal ideation in teens. Teens brains are still developing and they don't yet understand or have the perspective that things do change, do get better, long range thinking etc so they can think in black and white. I just talk to them "straight up" about everything. Just like you are talking to me. I ask "have you ever heard of seasonal depression"? xoxo Quenby
I am so glad to hear this video helped you. What other therapy videos would be helpful? I have one on how to help teens actually LIKE counseling. Thanks Quenby
I am still a novice in working with Adolescents struggling with mental health issues. I would like to know more on how to use art therapy (and other approaches) to help teens. Moreover, how can I not to advice giving and still help teens. Thanks!
Any advice on how to improve telehealth sessions with teens? It’s sometimes seems they are much more easily distracted by their cell phones from their bedrooms
I think you may have answered your own question here, Shari. I am very transparent and authentic with teens. I would simply say "oh, you seem distracted by your phone, how about putting it away until we are done" Keep it light, not punishing, but just real. xo Quenby
Hi! I am a new subscriber and new LGPC. I have been a school counselor for 11 years and venturing into private practice now. I am seeing a lot of teens with eating disorders. What resoures/trainings do you suggest to learn more and support my clients? Thanks
Wonderful! When I have worked with teens with Eating Disorders, I am always in collaboration with the medical Doctor and the Eating Disorder Clinic. As an LMFT I would not go it alone since Eating Disorder is considered a medical issue and has health risks. Hope that helps xo Quenby
Do you have any interactive therapy resources you particularly like to use for teens in teletherapy? I am an experienced in person counselor now working in a virtual setting counseling high school students. Thank you for posting these helpful videos.
Hi Tina, I have worked with teens for 15 years, so I created the teen therapy questions cards after years of trial and error. I ran groups for a decade and I learned which questions bombed and which opened teens up. Thank you. xo Quenby
Hi there. I just found your video and its very helpful for me as a social work student. I was wondering though, what factors should a practitioner consider before planning any activities for teenagers?
Thanks, glad it was helpful. There are many factors to consider when planning what you want to do with kids in a therapeutic setting.....any activity should have a goal in mind. are you doing the activity to learn more about the teen? Or to build connection? Or is it an assessment tool to gather information? is the activity designed to help the teen process something more easily ? or provide education about whatever issue brought the teen to counseling? Often I figure out what I need to work on in therapy with the teen and then I make up an activity that will help me do that work with them.
Honestly I have not ever played games in family therapy. I have used art and had clients work on an art piece together especially if therapy is for grief. I know many Therapists play games and it's a helpful tool but its never been my thing. Xo Quenby
What advise can you give on counseling a class that's about to sit a major international exam which may determine their future and my future as a teacher
I think I would need more information to offer any real suggestions. My style is to address things head on. NAME WHAT IS HAPPENING. I would address that many of them are probably nervous and anxious and that is normal under the circumstances. I would encourage them to take several deep breaths so they relax before the exam. Quenby
Thankyou great info, I'm trying to help my friend who's daughter is 14 , and depressed can my friend go with her daughter in therapy or is her daughter old enough to go by herself? Thanks
Yes of course the adult and daughter can go together! However at 14 she is def old enough to go alone too. I see kids who are only 5 alone! whatever you are all comfortable with. Thank you Quenby
