      "Oh, but you can't eat anything!" Me: "but I CAN eat most foods." Literally, my diet isn't that restrictive.
      Me to a friend at a cafeteria, deciding whether it's safe for me to eat there or not: "can you notice any particular spices in that?" (My friend is already eating and her meal looks like it might be ok, but I just need to make sure.)
      Them: "No, this is completely tasteless."
      Why do they need to turn my allergies into a rant about how bland something tastes?
      In relation to this I hate it if people assume I'm a conservative eater who doesn't like anything "exotic". While I'm just trying to stay out of the ER. Ginger happens to be something that sent me there once. Haven't touched it since, for obvious reasons.
      I know ginger isn't the most common allergy, and yes, I have several food allergies. I just wish at least my friends would stop sensationalising the issue, like why make such a huge deal out of it? And also, please stop bitching how bland something I eat tastes to you. At home I use salt & pepper & herbs, at a cafeteria or some other public place I obviously don't have control over what the chef is using (unless I've been able to preorder something, which is a nuisance if I can't be certain about the time when I'll be eating, because the chef needs to know that).
      Also it seems really hard for people to understand how I might need to test something before preparing to eat a whole meal made with that. It really sucks to be afraid of possibly dying, or at least needing to use an Epi-Pen. Last time I had tachykardia because of Epi-Pen, but was already at the ER at that point, and it turned out just fine.
      Sorry for the long rant.;) And thanks for making this video!

      After I told a waiter I have a wheat intolerance, they straight-up told me I didn't cause that type of intolerance simply didn't exist to them... and then my date and I had to leave so I could get medical attention cause they laced my food with wheat flour for fun.

    My friend is extremely allergic to tomatoes, and we both told the waitress. We both ordered the same thing but she got the one with tomatoes, which was covered with sauce, she went into shock. I used her epi-pen on her, called an ambulance. Right before I was going to join her in the ambulance the restaurant demanded that I pay the bill. 😮 Really? I told her to get stuffed, we both warned her about it and yet she almost killed my friend. I called the health Inspector and consumer rights bureau on them.

    I read something one time that was like, "when those really skinny girls order diet coke I give them regular muahaha" or something like that and it's like, you have no idea why they are ordering diet coke and it's not even extra work like food restrictions or anything but you just have to gatekeep diet products??
    And my dad, who is diabetic, personally drinks diet coke sometimes because he can use it when he's crashing (I think?), and you know, he can actually drink it. But Coke fucks up his Insulin and can put maybe even put him in the hospital.
    That skinny girl could have some health condition and this dude was literally just possibly poisoning people because he thought they where to skinny to "deserve" diet coke. It's so awful.

    • @firesoftheasylum7890
      @firesoftheasylum7890 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Some people really are careless. Hopefully, no one messes with your dad's food or drinks, because that's so dangerous. If someone says they can't have something, act responsibly and don't lie about what you're giving them. You could kill someone.
      Or, people want to "test" what your limits are. Coworker wiped a latex glove across my forehead to see if I really was allergic, like what the fuck is wrong with you? You don't mess with people. I went to a restaurant a few years ago, and asked if the dish had corn, nuts or seeds and was assured multiple times there wasn't. Well, the "flour" tortilla they said was flour was actually corn and covered in sauce, so I couldn't see it. I spent a week in the bathroom and a few days in the hospital, because I couldn't stop throwing up and was bleeding from places you shouldn't and because I was so ill, my seizures also increased. It was a pretty rough few weeks, all because someone couldn't be bothered to be honest.

      I really despise those kinds of people, my severely autistic sibling has some pretty restricted dietary needs as it is, and I'd flip my shit if I found out someone gave him a chocolate bar. I've had people scoff at me for saying he can't have gluten, dairy, soy, and most sugars that aren't from fruit and that he ends up being out of commission and loopy for a solid week if he gets his hands on a bit of dairy milk.
      It also doesn't help that he used to steal people's food because it was difficult finding alternatives that were safe years ago... I shudder to think what would happen if he developed diabetes as well

    • @rainmeh4255
      @rainmeh4255 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yea, I remember seeing a video or story somewhere a while back about a girl who ordered a diet coke and got a normal in a Mac Donald's. She ended up in hospital cause she's got a bad reaction to one of the ingredients, she wasn't allergic, but something to do with digesting it causes her whole body to seize up or something like that and I think she got paralyzed for a bit. Restaurant servers are aweful and should just serve what u order and not say "yea" and give u something else. :(

    • @torijohnson3000
      @torijohnson3000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I've known (and no longer associate with) baristas who would passive agressivley put whole milk in the drinks of skinny girls who ordered soy, oat, or almond milk. They though it was a funny way of "one-upping" them for their perceived vanity. But as someone who has severe lasctose intolerance (among several other dietary restrictions and issues) I live in fear of someone doing this to me and the reaction it would cause. I'm not skinny because I'm watching my figure; I'm skinny becuase I have conditions that prevent me from maintaining a healthy weight! And who cares even if I was watching my weight? What's so wrong with that, that someone should feel the need to sabotage or punish you for it?

      I get this happen a lot as I need regular sodas (pops) and no zero or diet as I’m very allergic to artificial sweeteners. This happened the past week we were at a restaurant and I took one cautionary small sip of my “regular” coke, I knew immediately it was diet. My fiancé got the attention of are server who smugly said that they like to give plus size people diet drinks. I’m plus size, autistic, and I have significant allergies. My fiancé explained I have severe allergies(artificial sweeteners, tree nuts, strawberries, bees and a whole host of meds) as I had started to develop hives. Ended up heading to the ER right after.,

    Not sure if you will actually see this, but I worked as a server and also a manager in a small restaurant for a period of my life. Gluten-free is actually fairly easy, because we had GF options and were trained on how to prepare them for people with celiac, so that all worked swimmingly. But I can understand what the servers are getting at with the question “what happens.” It’s a training issue. What they mean is “how severe is the reaction and how careful do we need to be about cross contamination?” For example, if the food in question is red onions, but the item you ordered is red peppers, I would know that the two are prepared in the morning, and are stored in side by side containers. A piece of red onion could easily have touched the peppers, or the prep cook might have been lazy and used the other same knife, or cutting board, or not properly wiped down the surfaces. The lids on the containers might have been switched. We don’t want the customer to become ill, but we also just might not have any other red peppers in the restaurant, and so preparing more would require an emergency run to the grocery. If the reaction to onions is only if you eat the onions directly, then the pre-cut peppers are okay. If you have a severe allergy where the slightest molecule could send you into anaphylaxis, I’m going to get new peppers, wash down a surface and prepare them specially, happily, because you are important and I would like my customers not dying.
    If you want to cut this line of questioning off, tell the server (firmly) that you have a severe condition that requires careful non-contamination (if that’s the case) or that your reaction is only if you ingest the food directly. That will cut off the questions before they start in most cases. It is absolutely acceptable to be frustrated by poor service, and if your server is asking inappropriate questions, I strongly advise asking for a supervisor or calling later to explain the problem. Management wants to know.

      I'm one of those challenging to feed people and I avoid restaurants whenever possible... but when I don't have a choice, I start my conversation with the server with an apology about how much they are going to have to do just to see if I can eat there. I've stood outside of kitchens while the server passes me boxes so I could read labels. Even if the kitchen messes up, out of ignorance, rote, or plain meaness, I still tip my server well because they did their best for me in an almost impossible situation.

    When I was working in kitchens, there was a woman who had many, severe intolerances. And she had a card! She literally gave the waiter a card (the size of a business card) that listed all of her restrictions on one side, and things that were fine on the other. We loved it! It was more restrictions than would have fit on the tickets, so to have a little piece of paper we could all see that very clearly listed everything was great. Also, she had given us a heads up when she made the reservation that she had a special diet. We loved that woman.
    Side note, our restaurant prided itself on being accommodating, but this woman just made our lives so much easier and a little bit less stressful.

      Speaking as a former cook, the kitchen will thank you! If you feel comfortable doing so, I highly recommend telling the restaurant when you make the reservation (probably best to call in to get a reservation). This might not work at a chain restaurant (since most of their stuff will be pre-made at a commissary) but any restaurant that's making their food in house, from scratch, should be able to help you out. There's almost always something they can do. And if there really isn't, they can probably direct you to somewhere better. Dont be surprised if the hostess taking your reservation says that they'll need to talk to the chef and they'll have someone call you back to make sure they have a good menu. Or they could just say "ok, we'll take care of it" and then you get dinner. We even had someone bring in gluten free bread once because they wanted garlic bread but had celiac's. That's a little extreme, but it just goes to show that most restaurants will make you something you can enjoy. It's just better to give them time to plan something.
      Last note, it's possible your food will take a little longer to prepare, especially if you have a peak-hour reservation. Kitchen's have a rhythm, and specialty menu's are a curve ball that can throw it off, but it'll get done, itll get done correctly, and it'll be tasty.
      A lot of restaurants these days are trying to be more accommodating. It's worth calling and asking. Some will even specify on their websites that they can make special menus.

    This video is the most relatable video I've ever seen. I'm allergic to casein, peanuts, and treenuts, as well as cats, dogs, and almost 30 various molds and pollens (conclusion: I was born on the wrong planet). I have actually had people sneak my allergens into my food because they don't believe me and want to "test" me. Oh yes, I love spending two hours on the toilet in crippling pain and covered in hives before throwing up everything I've ever eaten in my entire life because you don't think I'm really allergic to dairy or don't think it's "really that serious". Second conclusion: people are stupid jerks.

      @@mariamb8818 For sure.
      It can vary but usually it starts with intestinal discomfort, cramping and gas or straight up diarrhea (depending on how much tolerance you have if any, you may bypass gas altogether.) Sometimes nausea. If I've eaten a "white dairy" (cream cheese, sour cream etc) it can happen pretty fast (either side of an hour) and last for a day or 2+, but if it's something less powerful (like cheddar/hard cheeses) it can start causing problems (diarrhea/general bowel discomfort) the next day. Sometimes nausea can be involved but it generally tends to focus on the exit routes, if you will.
      As for diarrhea I'm not just talking soft stool, I mean Willy wonka chocolate river LIQUID, not trusting yourself to pass gas, and woohoo more stomach, intestines, bowel cramping. Charge your device and prepare for a long stay near the toilet. Bring nappy rash cream for the stomach acid burn on your skin.
      And you can be somewhat lactose intolerant rather than full blown. Maybe you're only going to get gas, bloating, cramping. Maybe you can still have hard cheeses or small servings of whatever. It's still lactose intolerance.

I’m on the lower end of the legal blindness spectrum and still have a lot of vision compared to someone who’s totally blind. The doctors don’t know what’s wrong with my eye cause they’re structurally fine. I even have a few inches of sight where I can “see” like a normal person. And It was during the last bit of year 10/ start of year11 which is GCSE years btw. So yh you can imagine I lost a LOAD OF SCHOOL AND REVISION TIME.
    Anyways back to the Cafe Rouge scene.
    I ordered what looked like a GF (gluten free) DF&LF (Dairy &Lactose free), Allergen free Vegan chickpea burger and marketed as quite delicious.
    I picked that one.
    They had run out of chips and sweet potato fries by 5:30pm. In London. They ran out of potatoes > there was a tesco express around the corner, I wouldn’t have cared if they had bought tons of oven chips to make up for it and cook them instead. But they didnt.
    Anyways my mum ordered her stuff as well.
    It came 10 minutes later. Too early. Our food was dry. My chickpea burger patty was burnt round the edges, freezer burnt on top, and just heated through. Luckily I picked it apart. Beforehand. I was sceptical so I got my mum to try it , like I always do just to double check my food is fine before I eat it, my mum literally freaked. She picked it apart.
    There was Halloumi dairy cheese and Egg mayo that was being hidden by limp pieces of spinach and lettuce. The spinach and lettuce looked gross and sweaty.
    My mum’s food was dry as anything.
    My mum complained, said she didn’t want to pay becuz it was so bad and that she said “does your head chef even know how to cater for someone with dietary requirements?” in an upset ish tone I guess ?!? My mum was so upset and cross that day.
    Tbh I should’ve taken pictures and sent them to Gordon Ramsey. They looked like smthg out of his American version of his show ‘Kitchen Nightmares’. It was rlly bad.
    If Cafe Rouge See this. We don’t want compensation. All we want is for all your staff in all your outlets to go through a re-training programme on how people’s dietary requirements should be met properly and not having to be like “oh we ran out of this so we will just put the allergen in this allergen free food and hope they won’t notice”. My mum says she’s glad that she checked my food beforehand and that she’s glad that I’m not allergic to dairy, that would’ve been a different story totally. This kind of behaviour is dangerous so instead a re-training schedule instead of compensation would be much better. Tbh.

    This made me so happy!!! I deal with this on a daily basis, being severly allergic to eggs and dairy (which for whatever reason is in literally everything even when it has no reason to be), and it's good to hear that someone else understands the struggles I go through. I feel the same way about the vegan menu as you do about the GF menu. It was like heaven when I went to my first vegan resteraunt as a kid and didn't have to deal with the emotion of every other time I ate out. It's my dream to live somewhere that has them so I won't have to deal with the "I'm sorry it's an inconveinence but I would rather not die" part of my day to day life. So to summarize this rant, thank you for sharing your feelings and making all the people with dietary restrictions feel understood!

      Yes! I babysat a girl who was allergic to the proteins in milk and egg. Even a tiny bit could kill her. Everything had to be checked and you find those ingredients where you wouldn't expect, like frozen potatoes for example.
      Learning to cook vegan options was a bit of a challenge, but they were actually very tasty. The hardest part was that I pretty much live off eggs since it's one of the few foods that doesn't make me sick so I didn't know what else to make. And I had to be hypervigilant of food made by others cause they would forget to consider cross contamination or say something was sautéed in butter
      Once her daycare accidentally gave her a chocolate chip cookie and I had to take her to the emergency room that night (she has a delayed reaction). It was horrible! She's since grown out of her milk allergy so that simplifies things

    I was a served for many years and I have NEVER had a problem accommodating someone with an allergy or intolerance. I would ask if they needed me to use separate equipment to make their order (in case they could not have the equipment even come into contact with the allergen). I have NEVER asked someone what would happen if they ate the allergen. That is completely inappropriate and no one should have to explain their diet to a stranger. In my mind, it is hard enough having an allergy so I was always happy to find something they could enjoy on our menu.

    Ugh, I feel you! This is so annoying, I have very severe allergies to dairy and eggs. I went into anaphylactic choc last year and was kept under observation for a couple of hours in the hospital. When it was dinner time, I asked the hospital staff who was serving my food if there were any dairy or eggs in the dish they were giving me as I have allergies and went into anaphylactic choc a couple of hours ago. And the staff had the nerve to call me a picky eater because I was unhappy with my food. The nurse overheard everything and thankfully intervened!

  • @alexalittle

    My latest pet peeve is when the staff has NO IDEA what's in any of the food. Like, you're a restaurant... How is that even possible?
    We were traveling last week and 3+ times I explained that I have a nut allergy and asked if the food contained nuts. Answer? "I'm pretty sure it doesn't." Great! I'm pretty sure I won't die then! Don't bother double-checking to potentially save my life. 🙄
    Or, when they do double-check, and even the managers and chefs don't know. I finally told one place not to bother and walked out after a crowd of staff spent 5 min debating the issue.
    For whatever reason, the not knowing bothers me more than a prompt, "Sorry, you can't eat this." I think it's all the unnecessary drama and feeling totally exposed and alien... as if no one else at the restaurant has ever had an allergy before.

    Mmm reminds me of the time i was stopped by the vegan patrol on campus. They said they had food and recipes. I like vegetables, thought hey maybe they have something good. Then they started telling me how my ham sandwich was terrible and offered me a pb sandwich. I told them, "cant allergic to nuts, peanuts, direct soybean products and chickpeas. Got any recipes without them?" They proceed to list all of these wonderful delicious foods, but lo! They didnt know hummus is made of chickpeas and everything they listed off from macrons to tofu. I remember looking at them saying you know macrons have almond flour. They said, yes. They said yes. I said. "Thats a nut". They had a moment and stood there, and said "it a seed like sunflower, you wont have an allergy because its organic."

      I had the vegans tell me to eat all the things I’m allergic to instead of killing animals...cause it’d be better that I die than the animals. The only food groups I DON’T have issues with are berries, leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, meats, fish, poultry, shellfish. So basically....if I gave up eating animals I’d be eating greens veggies and berries only....cause I’m allergic to peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, corn, rice, soy, cinnamon, tomatoes, apples, grapes, oranges, lemons, citrus fruits, avocados, peaches....I’m sure I’ve forgotten some. I was also allergic to every trees, grass, and weed pollen they tested me for...and some molds...and dust mites. Ironically I am not allergic to being around animals or eating animals. I’m also chemically sensitive....cannot be around cigarettes, perfumes, cleaning products, air fresheners (had a job put them in the ceiling tile above my desk once....like I couldn’t still smell it was somewhere nearby and react to it!)....these things cause asthma flares. Also....I develop new allergies all the time...and become more allergic to things I’m already allergic to. Like hazelnut..,,I was eating it one month....allergic the next....it’s actually my worst food allergy right now. So when I eat an item in the same food group as items I’m already allergic to I tend to become allergic to it....which means I tend to avoid nuts in general...and fruits....and non green veggies...

    You're supposed to write cards to your friends? Guess I should stop by the stationary shop after payday.
    As someone in food service it is interesting how attitudes have changed over the past decade or so. When I first started, those "annoying people" you mentioned made cutting corners seem reasonable, which obviously hurt people with actual allergies and sensitivities. The fallout from that has led to idea now, of being allergy friendly by default, which some customers will balk at, but really that switch isn't as dramatic as a lot of people assume it would be.
    The university I work for did this in one of its dining halls by first switching the brands it used, then overhauling all the recipes it could and quietly dropping the ones it couldn't. Finally they announced that this hall would be gluten and peanut free. And that's when some (who had been eating there as the actual changes were made) decried how awful the menu would become. So yeah, I'm hopeful that more restaurants do that and the larger public sees how these changes don't affect them but can really help others.

    Wife of a chef here: One thing you can do, especially if you have extreme allergies and intolerances is the following:
    Find a self-owned non-chain restaurant. Call the restaurant during off peak hours. Ask them if their chef would be interested in a challenge. You have really horrendous dietary restrictions, what you really really want to eat a good meal at a good restaurant.
    Would they be willing to take the list of foods that you cant eat and foods you really enjoy... And make something amazing for you?
    Now you might be thinking "oh come on. No chef would be interested."
    That would be something they do everyday. Sometimes orders don't come. Sometimes food goes bad. Sometimes things sell out. Sometimes there's leftovers.
    To save money they get creative!
    Doing them the courtesy of giving them some time to prepare... They would be ecstatic to try and make you an amazing meal. Especially if you give the more than 24 hours notice and they can even order stuff in.
    This is something chefs live for. It's the reason why shows like chopped exist.
    Name some places can't do it because they run on too tight a budget. Or it may not be safe because gluten is just ingrained in the walls and you might die. But calling and asking is so appreciated... even if it's something they can't manage they may be able to tell you another restaurant in town that they know who can.
    Because chefs tend to become friends over time if they stay in the same area.
    this may seem like a lot of work and it may be very difficult because of phone anxiety, etc, but I know so many chefs who absolutely adore this sort of challenge, including my husband and all of his friends.
    I told one woman about this idea and I actually ended up being in the restaurant when she finally came in. She got something completely off menu, but was totally safe for her to eat. And she enjoyed it so much she cried a little. Because she hadn't been able to eat out in years. She came back many times.
    It is possible to get amazingly prepared food catered directly to your needs.
    Sending love to you all from a person who also has dietary problems. 😅

Because even though she would tell them that they _didn't_ need to make an extra something just for her (there's almost always other food she could eat there, since not all food has cheese) but they'd make a huge fuss about it, drawing attention to my mom, and they'd make something anyway. It was just really embarrassing for her. She doesn't care as much anymore, especially since I started announcing she was allergic and cheese could kill her (which is true), at gatherings and restaurants, when I was about 5. It scared the pants off me- and still does- because, acquaintances, "friends" _and_ family have all tried (and succeeded a few times) to slip cheese into her food. That's unfortunately pretty common. If I have a good day , I might be able to tolerate other things, I might even try something new if I'm adventurous. But going to a restaurant with people is never considered to be a good day for me...

    When I first started becoming lactose intolerant (I love the surprise on people's faces when they find out that these things can be developed and that people aren't always born with these things), I was at school at lunch and took like a tiny bite of cheese (I didn't know I was at the time) and immediately became really sick and dizzy and then after like I minute I collapsed on the floor and at the end of lunch (it was I think a 45 minute break) my friends had to literally carry me to medical. Late to seeing this but so so sorry. The later in life allergies might be the worst. When you know early, no taste for it, just an inbuilt 'oh... crap, no, get it away!' around it. But as you get older and even worse, when it's a slow build from 'eh, my stomach feels weird' to 'huh, why is my mouth itchy' to 'oh. wow. so this is what an ambulance ride is like!'. I have this with shellfish. Grew up on the beach, grew up eating it, started feeling wonky around 12 and now as an adult, I can't walk on some beaches anymore. Epi pens SUCK. I hope avoiding it has become easy.

    My sis got diagnosed with celiac... finally. She has a pretty mild case by comparison, but that doesn’t necessarily make it better. She’s pretty good about just knowing what she can and can’t have and we stick to a pretty tried and true list of places if we want to go out. However, we went on vacation. Now, the wait staff was wonderful and Disney will bend over backward to make your food restrictions as easy-breezy as possible, but we had no idea you could inform them ahead of time of the issue when you make a reservation. Sis also has anxiety. So, on our first night, she had to inform the waitress of her restrictions and, despite the girl’s super sweet and cool attitude about it, my sis began to cry because she felt she was holding everyone else up. The girl calmed her down, brought her gluten-free bread, helped her pick a delicious gluten-free meal and dessert, and then went the extra mile to call the internal reservation service to make sure the gluten-free tag was added to our reservation for her for every other restaurant we had planned (that way they just give you a special menu for the person and bring gluten-free bread without having to be asked or drawing a bunch of attention). No more tears, no more embarrassment. Delightful vacation overall. Thanks, sweetheart waitress. A little positive story about a non-jerk just trying to make it better.

(I don't remember the specific allergy/intolerance she had) The waiter got the book with all the allergy info in and she chose a dish, they didn't have to alter it in anyway. BUT despite the fact that her dietary limitation had only taken up 2 minutes tops of this waiters time, our entire table overheard him say to a colleague "Why even bother coming here if you're not gonna eat x?" In a very condescending and sarky tone.

Celiac finally diagnosed at 25 and while it's a whole new world now with the joy of not being sick all the time, there are days.... and it is worse when you have been 'good', not messed up once in months and then had some twit at the supposedly safe to eat at restaurant think it's no big deal to roll their eyes and ignore you. I once had a waiter actually tell a friend (after I had bolted to the bathroom) that I was making too much of it, after all she had picked out the croutons from the salad herself (without gloves. joy unending) and there could only have been a small amount of wheat in the sauce so why was I being so difficult. She started to learn why I was so difficult 5 hours in, 3 hours past closing, when the horrified owner made her stay until I was able to leave the bathroom without fear of not making it home intact. She also had to clean the bathroom. Is it wrong that, for the first and only time, I was almost, ah, dare I say smug, when I limped out knowing the warzone she was about to face?

    • @xiola
      @xiola 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, but give me "I don't think so" over a confident-but-completely-uninformed "no" ANY DAY, though! x___x At least if they say "I think" you can ask them to please go and check (in my experience this is usually not an unusual request, and if the ingredients are not guaranteeable/searchable they'll usually come back and tell me that and recommend something else). But if they confidently tell me "no," then I naturally assume that someone else has already asked in the past, and they know what they're talking about, and I don't ask for follow-up.
      However, I have gotten burned so many times by confidently wrong responses and all I can say is that a lot of local businesses are very lucky that my anaphalactic allergy is mild enough that I only get the first half of the symptoms by the time I figure out that something has nuts in it and have never had to go to the ER over it.... x__x This year alone it happened 2 or 3 times at cafes (normally it's once every couple of years) so I think I'm going to have to start being that jerk who asks to read ingredients lists myself when I have any doubts because this year I've even had people literally look up recipes for me and then read them wrong... :(

    • @evvunja
      @evvunja 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But I hope for them that you don't yell at them and just ask 'could you please check it?'. I mean, we are all just people and we might makes mistakes. Well, it annoys me too when everyone asks 'oh, you study graphic design?' and than I have to describe once again what is the difference between graphic design and digital art. Or when people ask me if I speak Russian when I start to speak Polish. It is also annoying. But we can't expect from everyone to know everything. And they will ask once, maybe twice - after that, they will know how to behave and what's actually the disease. People are just curious, they don't want to be jerks. That's something new to them, it's normal that they ask. I have just the impression that society starts to be offended by anything right now. Soon we will be afraid to speak or we will learn at school phrases that we can say and we will use only them.

    • @Justmemie
      @Justmemie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It doesnt matter if someone is just being fussy though. Their body, their bounderies/rules and you are crossing them by forcing a diet onto them that they specifically for whatever reason told you they do not want/cant have. People that eat meat get angry at vegans that try to force everyone to go vegan and very few people dont think those vegans are shitty people. Some islamophobic/antisemetic people try to smuggle pork into religious muslims/jews diet and normal people dont think that's right on any level. Yet somehow it's ok because you've labeled someone a fussy eater? Literally just respect people like ffs it's not that hard.
      And that is spoken as someone constantly called "a fussy eater". Despite having both medical and sensory food restrictions. I can have mashed potatoes and not die but i literally will throw up several times trying to swallow it because my sensory processing cant stand the texture. That is basically just an extreme version of the reaction others get to food they hate.

    I don't currently have any restrictions (mostly because I don't- well, can't- eat much of anything at all, but that's a story for another day) but my mom is allergic to cheese. All cheese. No, not dairy, just cheese. And it's a true allergy, hives, throat closing up, the whole works. In her life, she has frequently had acquaintances, close "friends" and even family, try to slip cheese in her food. Naturally, that happening (or people/restaurants that genuinely forget and leave cheese in) became, and still is, a massive fear of mine. So since I was about 5, whenever we eat out, I stress the fact that she has a true allergy, especially since people _have_ forgotten before. She tells them, of course, but I add in the "It could kill her, this isn't just someone being picky".
    I actually have a bone to pick about how people treat "picky eaters" as well. (Here's an interesting article on adult picky eaters: munchies.vice.com/en_us/article/59yq58/the-private-hell-of-an-adult-picky-eater) Even if someone is "just" a picky eater, without intolerances or allergies, restaurants should treat them with the same amount of respect as they would anyone else. Their job is to serve customers, not cast judgment on them. They aren't hurting anybody by wanting certain foods and wanting those foods in a specific way! I think less people would claim to have an intolerance or allergy if they weren't treated with such disdain for being a "picky eater" (yes, I'm using scare quotes on it again, because it's a ridiculous term that makes it sound like it's a choice. It's really not. No one _wants_ to make life harder for themselves...).
    As far as waiters, acquaintances and total strangers thinking they have the right to ask invasive questions about it is dead on and so very, very rude. It's unfortunate, but that seems to be an incredibly frequent attitude people have towards chronic health problems and diseases. They feel entitled to ask massively personal questions and then get mad if you politely tell them it's not something you want to talk about. I _hate_ it. I'm not against talking about my health problems at all, and I think it's important to do so, or if people ask questions _after_ I say it's ok to ask me questions. It's just not ok to ask out of nowhere to a complete stranger.
    I'm almost positive there was something else I wanted to say but I can't remember what. I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open, so it's time for a map. Maybe I'll remember what I was thinking of while I sleep.

    If you've ever worked in a restaurant, then you know that questioning someone on their dietary restriction/restrictions is EXTREMELY RUDE! DO NOT DO THAT!

    Need to show family
    I mean like you have known me for 16 years,know I am highly allergic to milk,eggs,nuts...... but you get me a chocolate selection for Christmas. This is outside family
    My mum is allergic to gluten and dad has a minor allergy to acidic fruits.
    My mum spent years in the kitchen learning of new and different techniques to make food I can eat when free from foods wasn't a big thing and always got me on board with the rest of the family so I wasn't lonely
    One of my only issues is as a person who cant eat many animal products peoples first reaction is that I am a crazy vegan or want a vegan dinner, no i need the protein in my diet and vegan diets consist with foods I cant eat

    Yes to all of this! Artificial sweeteners make me incredibly sick and I have a server Solanaceae (nightshade) intolerance (tomatoes, peppers, chilies, paprika, cayenne pepper, aubergine, okra, goji berries, gooseberries and potato). People always ask what will happen if I eat any of those things when they are eating, my go to response is a raised eyebrow and muttering “you really don’t want me to tell you right now.”

      Oh man, I’ve got a few allergies under that and potato is in like everything so I’m always incredibly careful as I even have a contact allergy. Had a ‘friend’ who really likes potato decide to eat crisps just before meeting up with me, then admire my jumper which I then put back on and was really uncomfortable. Then took my jumper off in a uni lecture, had hives all over my arms, my lecturer was horrified, asked if I needed to leave. I tried to redirect and say “no, I’d be stuck the same at home, let’s just finish class” and on the way out said ‘friend’ actually told me off for not explaining what hives were and drawing attention to their mistake, which until then I hadn’t realised. Like google it? Why do people need to know intimate details before they accept an issue?

    I have a number of allergies (or - "sensitivities". I still get anaphylaxis, my blood just doesn'tt go "hey, if she eats this and this I'll make her have anaphylaxis" when the doctors ask) that include peanuts and fish, that are usually pretty bad when someone does have them. The fish one sucks because I get the flu without getting the actual flu for a week, but it's not gonna kill me . ....so far.
    But red peppers. Like, bell peppers. They will make me so, incredibly, sick most of the time (the extent depends on if I was exposed to other allergens, how strained my body is etc) - and ALWAYS make me have to grab the not-epipen-yet allergy meds.
    Just the steam from a cooked bell pepper in the air is enough to make my throat constrict.
    And bell peppers suck because, if I remember the equation correctly, 1x1 mm drop of their fluid will contaminate the entirety of an average swimming pool. It's so concentrated.
    I spent my entire life first having to be a bother, which I hate - I have social phobia ffs, and order my food without it and then getting served bell peppers DESPITE that -- only to be told to "pick it off". By friends AND staff. 0v0;; Excuse me? I am already dying from you placing this in front of me and you want me to eat contaminated food??
    My dad is my hero. A few things he's not even allergic to, he just cannot stand the taste/texture. The rage-quits (as in, he rages and the staff quit and go work in safer environments like, prison) when he very carefully tells them, waits for his special order extra long and hasn't eaten all day -- then bites into his food and tastes that shit.
    ....One time an entire McDonalds fell silent as our car screeched into the parking lot, dad marched up to the counter (nobody moved, even the staff slowed) and slammed the hamburger onto the counter as he exclaimed that his "burger - NO CHEESE.... has CHEEEESE!"
    The burger very dramatically slid down the entire length of the counter, the wrapper opening and the layers each separating beautifully to reveal said cheese.
    We walked out with three full bags of food.
    The entire staff, including drive through, stopped their business to rush to serve us. o-o;;
    He's my hero but... in a ... dark antihero sort of way. QvQ (I felt so bad I apologised continuously.)

    Thank you for making a video about this, Jessica. I’ve almost given up on eating out because it’s more stressful to specify my dietary needs than to just stay home and make it from scratch. And I’m pretty sure the waiters don’t actually need to know about my history with chronic pain, acid reflux, PCOS, and sensitivity to gluten, dairy, and most spices to just serve some gluten free pasta sans garlic.

    My favorite thing that someone has asked me is, “are you sure you can’t eat it?” I completely forgot!!! This doesn’t make me swell up and feel like someone is pouring lava on my nerves, it’s the other thing! I completely forgot that I didn’t eat “so and so” and it made me dizzy and I fell down the stairs.....ugh.

    Ugh, yes! I've got several severe food allergies (including sunflower, which confused people), so I can relate to all of this. And yes, I am so glad that there has been an increased awareness of people being gluten free (albeit an often mocked awareness), but now for some reason waiters think that everyone with non-wheat food allergies and no gluten intolerances can't have gluten? It gets very annoying very fast, lol. All in all, restaurant staff *definitely* need better training about dietary restrictions.
