By acclimation Alice Faye was the nicest, the friendliest and the least affected of all stars in the Golden Age of Hollywood. And so gorgeous and talented.
Alice was a gracious and beautiful lady. IMO she has the greatest singing voice from Hollywood, and wish she recorded numerous albums. Love the Phil Harris and Alice Faye Radio show, and supported by a talanted cast. Thanks for posting this rare interview. I wonder where their kids/grandkids are today?
I can't believe this. Tonight I was wishing for a new Mary Martin posting - and here it is! And with Alice Faye! What a fantastic piece of video. Thank you. Mary, Alice, and Jim are total delights. I wish I could see all of the OVER EASY shows that Mary was a part of.
@@aeichler Do you have the episode with Dame Judith Anderson? I recorded the audio of that soundtrack on cassette with my Radio Shack SCT-20 tape deck. VCRs existed in 1982, but they sure weren't affordable to a 19 year old still living with his parents back in 1982! I had the pleasure of meeting Dame Judith twice in Santa Barbara in 1989 when she was then 92. She signed my 1949 Decca Lp of "Medea" in April of that year. In the "Over Easy" episode Dame Judith and Mary are quite warm to each other, and Mary notes that Dame Judith was godmother to her children. And I'm shocked that no masters exist of shows like this. The film masters for "Life With Lucy" are likewise gone, so the DVD set issued last year came from edited 1-inch tape transfers made for broadcast. Amazing that things like these aren't considered important enough to preserve in their original form. Even newsreels and videotapes of presidential inaugurations that I've seen on C-SPAN look several generations away from an original source. It's a stunner that Looney Tunes and Disney animation (which I love) are "digitally restored", but archival material of American presidents, great minds of many fields, Etc. only exist so far down the chain.
THANKS for sharing ! I fondly remember this program ! Our local PBS affiliate showed it on weekday afternoons ! Wonderful memories ! So much talent tween Mary & Alice ! Truly iconic stars !!
I met them when I worked at the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans...I was shocked at how GORGEOUS they BOTH were. If I did not know they were in the hotel...I would not have realized who they were..VERY quiet and pleasant and elegant..but UNUSUALLY good looking older couple...and always greeted us ( the clerk's) as if we were important. VERY NICE PEOPLE...NOT like a lot of "celebrities" I met in the two years I worked there..
I adore her. I grew up watching old movies. I own her movies. I was watching and decided they must have Miss Alice on TH-cam. And here she is. So band talented and funny. ♥️
Not a big fan of Musicals...but still like Alice Faye. Has anyone noticed a similarity between Faye and the mature Lauren Bacall in looks and vocal tones...?
Alice didn't just retire from films. She "walked out" in a fit of anger after seeing the rushes of her final starring role at Fox. This was all documented in an earlier newspaper article and by Alice herself. Why Alice has decided to sugar coat her retirement story is a mystery. Her final starring role was in a film called Fallen Angel and she costarred with Linda Darnell. It was a film that was supposed to present Alice in a new light...a straight black and white dramatic role... a murder story with twists. When Alice saw the rushes of the film at the studio she saw that her part had been severely edited out in order to favor younger star Linda Darnell. In fact, Alice does not appear in the film until the second half while Linda Darnell dominates the first half of the film. It was reported that while viewing the rushes, Alice walked out of the screening room, got into her car and stormed off the studio lot, almost running people over in the process. She never returned to the studio not even to collect her belongings. Fox was angered over her walking out like that and the studio made sure that she never worked again as a star at their studio or any other studio. So if Alice wants to go around and change her story about why she left movies, she should know that her original story is far more interesting. Actually, Fallen Angel is one of my favorite films, and even though Alice does not appear in the film until the second half she is quite effective and she should not have taken such offense at having been edited out of the first half of the film.
Yes, as year go by, "Fallen Angel" has developed a cult following. Fox begged Alice to come back for "The Dolly Sisters," but she refused. But she didn't really "retire," since her radio show with Phil had a long run and continued to do occasional TV appearances. She also doesn't mention her year of touring in "Good News".
It seems Ms. Faye was selective about when she shared the details of her "retirement." I've seen later interviews with her in which she is more forthcoming. She was always a rather private person, an introvert at heart, but that is a big part of her charm; there's a sense of intimacy you get from her. As others have commented, there's absolutely no artifice in what she says and how she presents herself, and we all love her for that, as well as her lasting contributions to music and entertainment.
@@aeichler Yes, I noted that she retired only from films. But she couldn't have continued working in films anyway since she was blacklisted in films for many years for "walking out" on her film contract.
@@jackanthony976 Maybe she didn't want to mention the nitty-gritty details perhaps because she didn't want to be viewed negatively, like she was in effect jealous of another actress (Darnell).
So that LADY Mary Martin was Larry Hangman’s mother wow 😮 credit to her THIS WAS TALENT not like nowadays with HASBEENS REALITY stars this is REAL old days TALENT and REAL STARS !!! None of ya rubbish
Sorry she didn't bring up her friendship with Betty Grable. Betty replaced Alice in the 1940 Technicolor musical Down Argentine Way. Then they played sisters in the 1940 musical Tin Pan Alley. The publicists wanted the public to think they didn't get along for some reason. They remained friends till Betty s death in1973. Betty usurped Alice's crown the same way Marilyn usurped Betty s crown as the top Blinds of the studio.

Well said and well put !! :-)
Miss and love you grandmother!
A great performer & perhaps my favorite singer of her voice & delivery during her career in films.

All of us are doing very well, thank you 🙏
ALICE FAYE WAS ABSOLUTELY GOLDEN
Grandmother, so blessed to see you here, now.🙏
GREAT ALICE FAYE Golden Hollywood
Such a treat! Alice Faye films were such fun....especially with the super handsome John Payne. Thanks for posting
I love her and miss her.
Thanks for posting this delightful interview. 2 pros: Mary Martin's perennial sweetness and Alice Faye's timeless beauty remain front and center.
I'm a big fan of hers and her husband Phil Harris. He was classic on the Jack Benny Show!
Alice Faye was just so beautiful all around - just a wonderful person. Phil Harris was a very lucky guy.

Some others are posted and I'll try to put up more. The masters of these shows are all destroyed, so these are quite rare.
@@aeichler Why????? No storage space, or the tapes needed to be reused?? I loved watching the series.

She outlasted Betty, Marilyn.
But, remained a close friend to Betty Grable!
A deliciously delightful woman!❤️

Alice did return to Fox to make her last feature film, the 1962 remake of "State Fair".

Legend has it that Betty didn't resent Marilyn any more than Alice resented her taking over as queen of the 20th Century Fox lot
ALICE FAYE LIKES AVOIDING ANSWERS .......JUST MY OPINION....
