You're correct in the second half, as in if a wind comes from the east it's an easterly wind etc, however onshore winds are winds that blow onto the shore and offshore winds are winds that blow off the shore.
What about for beginners like me on a big foamie. I'm still at the stage where I'm happy to pop up and ride straight in the white water; is it still worth going out in strong onshore wind creating choppy waves?
You got the names mixed up. Onshore wind is supposed to be offshore wind, and the other way around. So Onshore would be on the top and Offshore would be on the bottom. Sorry I just hate when people say this. Then they say it to another person. Then everybody gets misinformed. Then people get confused.
Nah bro not at all. Go to take a class on meteorology. Winds are classified from where they originate. An onshore wind originates onshore. An offshore wind originates offshore. You dont call a east wind a west wind because its blowing to the west do you?
so, there is no right way. The standard however is that offshore winds originate from an area of higher pressure that exists above the ocean and so the pressure flows down its gradient to a point of lower pressure present above land...NOT good for clean, hollow surf. But if I told my mates that the wind is offshore in regards to the proper definition of the term, they would be very disappointed to find that the waves and I are in fact "useless" ^ #Kristoffer Nissen
As we say in France, c'est "clair comme de l'eau de roche". Thank you man
Really great teaching! Thanks a lot!!! With care from Portugal.
As an Earth Science teacher, this guy did an awesome job of explaining wind at the beach.
Very very informative, many thanks.
Thanks for the Information!

No he has it right.
if wind pops up there is wind-and kitesurfing as a good alternative.so the day can always be on the water
ALWAYS FUCKING ONSHORE WERE I LIVE! ARGGGHHH..
In Holland we have onshore and waves, or offshore with flat water xD
Do you get good waves there?
onfire4000 Sometimes. Got my license a while ago now so I can drive in the early mornings before the sea breeze kicks in!!

Every surfer and surf forecaster will tell you the reverse of the onshore offshore thing compared to what a properly educated scientist will
