Back 8 years ago when lee yong dae and fu hai feng and endo and so many players from their genaration had good defence but i feel that the level of defence has gone down a lot even among the international players as everyone is trying to play fast flat games especially for doubles it is exciting but there are less rallies and its not that interesting to look at unless at the end of the game when points are neck to neck

Id say the opposite, defense has improved and evolved. You cant win matches anymore with straight power, just big smashes etc because they will come back and you will get tired. Players need more strings to their bow, hence the flat game, where speed, touch and tactics play a much bigger part than power. Look at the minions domination, nobody could get close yet physically they were not exceptional at all. Nowadays of course other pairs have caught up and incorporated it into their game. What makes this Indian pair, and the new indo pair Alfian and Ardianto scary is their flexibility, they can smash hard, play fast and flat, and defend really well.

@@jethromaris624 true but minions were fast and so good at the net plus flat games and tactical as well but their head to head with yuta and endo is preety bad . Yuta and endo played a lot of defence rather than playing flat exchanges and converted their defence to attack which proved effective against fast flat players like Kevin and Gideon

@@lothuakiu949 agreed, that pair where the exception with a very high winrate against the minions while every other pair got spanked for 2 years. However they struggled against bigger smashers like Li/Liu. Thats why the top pairs nowadays can and need to be able to do both, be flexible in the way they attack a pair.

i find the highly technical flat game followed by very fast attacks super-fun to watch. i you wanna watch long rallies with great defense and weak attacks, watch women's doubles

But seems like defence isn't that polished like the old times
