In our lives, we often also feel that finding our own Missing Piece-whatever it may be-will make us happy. However, after we find our own Missing Pieces we see a new set of desires and problems arise. This becomes a never ending search for an illusory Missing Piece that leads to unhappiness. According to the book, real satisfaction lies in rejecting the idea that there is a magic bullet that will make us happy. In the end, the circle realizes this and abandons its Missing Piece. After doing so, it immediately starts looking for its Missing Piece again, now armed with the knowledge that it is the quest that brings it fulfillment and not the attainment of the object itself.

Is this a metaphor for relationships?

erasmusso It's a metaphor of life in general.

When we people talk about missing pieces, we refer to another human being. A cat or a bicycle or a job can not be cosidered as missing pieces, thus can not be anything. So the story for someone who finds the missing piece (also metaphorically the other half) and abandons it, does not fit. Since it realizes there is not a missing piece in life, it should stop searching for a next one. That should be the knowledge gained. Otherwise there is created a distance from reality. Maybe the metaphor is for something else. But in general you are right, ones completeness/happiness can not be based on someone else. Because then it can also dissapear if that person leaves.

When it found its missing piece it lost the ability to talk to the worm or smell a flower or a butterfly to land on it. It lost its ability to sing.
The thing it was searching for the whole time was not what it truly cared about in the end. The circle realized that the missing piece was not worth losing everything it grew to love along the way.
So it let the missing piece go so that it can go back to the times it enjoyed rolling around slowly and enjoying its life.

I swear, you know you're growing up when this story has lost its innocence to you. As a little kid, you may have thought of this as just a fun story of a little guy looking for a missing piece. Sure, it was sad that he eventually had to lose his piece, but you kept on rolling with your life (no pun intended) without giving it a second thought. Now, years later, I realize that this story is about me. And you. The innocence is stripped away, and you realize that you may just be missing a piece. And I am too.

    • @Josh-og6hk

Im not sure whether missing a piece is a good thing or a bad thing. It seems that having it only leads to sorrow and depression, but not having one leads to the same thing. I just wish that there was some middle ground where you could be happy. But that will never happen

I think it's about how people go through life looking for something that will fulfill them. They feel an emptiness in themselves that they think is inherently wrong and therefore needs fixing. The things he fills the missing piece with symbolize the things you go through life trying to acquire to fill your life with meaning. The final message comes when he enjoys the experiences life has to offer as he is. Sieze the day with the power of self-acceptance.

I have come across with this story during my senior year in college. This story was included in the syllabus because we were studying World Literature at that time. I was in darkest moment in my life and didn't know I was suffering from depression and too much pressure from the university. My friends and I have a lot misunderstandings and I pushed them away. We tried to turn it around but it wasn't working. Our edges just don't fit anymore and it only ended hurting both sides. We parted ways after the graduation and I have lost contact to most them. I retained friendship for the two of them but it was never the same again. It's been 9 years since it happened it I came to realize that I was the missing piece in the story. Their season in my life has ended I have no regrets with that friendship and the love we shared was genuine. The pain was just too much that we can never go back to what it was. That was my interpretation to this story. It's a children's book but says a lot about our bitter, sad and nostalgic life.

I missed this story so much. I read it in grade school and forgot about it years later. Revisiting it now, it almost hurts to read again thanks to my many experiences of love, loss, pain, and sacrifice. I almost want to cry because I realize that I'm one of millions of people out there who'll probably never find that one missing piece to make their lives feel complete, whatever it is. For some it's school. For some it's love. For some, it's religion. For some, it's just happiness. For me, it's love. But that's just part of the journey to find the part that's not there to gain true fulfillment. It may take our entire lifetimes, but I think that's the point of the story. We'll always keep rolling, singing our little song, trying and trying and trying again until we find the perfect match for ourselves.
    God, I missed this story...

I liked this story when I was young. It touched me a lot. But before, I think missing piece meant to find another half. Now, I finally realised that it is talking about perfection. Trying to be perfection is not perfect at all. That’s my thought.

This story of The Missing Piece is about ones journey in life from the time you are born to the day you die. People struggle to find meaning in their lives and hope to find the answers along that journey. At the end of their journey when they die, it's only then that they realize that there was never a missing piece but life is really about experiencing all the good and bad things that happen to us. The missing piece to me is a metaphor for Hope which gives us the will to live and never give up. When the final day arrives for each and every one of us, we can appreciate what a wonderful, interesting and challenging life we had. I see the missing piece as an instrument of hope for me to keep learning and appreciate all life has to offer and how lucky we are to be put on this earth and we should make use of this opportunity. Indeed, life is short but sweet.

This story is NOT saying you shouldn't stay with someone if they make you happy because somehow you are better off alone. That's taking the story way too literally.
It's about how often in life we become so focused on achieveing a goal we forget to enjoy the moment. We think "I'll be happy when... I get the car, the wife, the job, money etc. The happiness is always in the future instead of the now. This story reminds us that it's not the destination that counts...it's the journey.

I searched for 55+ years to find that missing piece so I could tell my daughter who her father was...long story. It finally came, the mystery last Saturday...strangely enough, now that she older, she has lost interest. I was searching for her? Or, perhaps myself? DNA Detectives group on Facebook has over 40,000 members. I joined a few months ago. I love this video...sat her crying...thank you for posting it and to whomever created it. xo

      If yes, that's amazing!
      What a small world..🤗
I hope you get some closure, but remain open. 💗
      The story isn't over.
Don't carry what doesn't serve you.
If you don't heal that wound, you'll bleed all over everyone who didn't cut you and you don't want that for everyone you love.
If plans are going to fall apart, let them fall apart perfectly. There is a lot to feel blessed about, still.
If things are going to get turned around, you'll only know it if you remain open to it.
You can only will it to be, and move on without expectation.
Accept what is out of your hands, is out of your control. All you have is love.
      Breathe.
Your soul has come so far.
      Be gentle with yourself.
      Stay gentle with others.
Know that you mapped this out for yourselves before, and it will all play out perfectly the way it is meant to for you, and everyone around you. Use your free will and take back the courage to live as is. There is no wrong way.
Sorry, think I was channeling there for a minute. Not sure if that was for you, me or the next person to read that. I have to go to bed though, as I was half asleep for most of that rant and it's real sleep time, but 💗 to you.

The morale of this story is, I think, that everyone should have an impossible, unreachable goal they set for themselves. For when you set minimal goals and achieve them, you find that they are not worth much. A momentary thrill and sense of satisfaction that is over in a few moments. Just one more thing crossed off a long list. On to the next thing.
But constantly striving and never achieving, but enjoying every minute of the quest. All the surprises along the way. That is what old Don Quixote understood, I suspect He imagined himself to be a brave knight on a long quest. It gave meaning to his life in an often meaningless world. Others probably considered him crazy but he may have been wiser than they.

    Then you find contentment
But now you're missing the adventures you had while looking for contentment
    So you drop the contentment
And immediately start becoming sad again
You realize that you'll never find it again
    But you embrace it

In partnership. Rather the circle is complete in itself, and through practice and determination, a triangle can be more rounded and move side by side with the other.

I read this book as a child, and it became my favorite book, because I knew immediately, that would be me. And it was. And it is.

This was - as so often with cartoonist (Playboy etc.), screenwriter, songwriter (Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Kris Kristofferson, himself...) and artist Shel Silverstein (1930-99), a kid's book (1976) for grownups. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shel_Silverstein)
I guess those who don't get it are happy with conformism. Find someone that "completes you" as in the movies, and get happy and fat together with in real life. Others prefer their personal freedom (from what?) and go their own way. You might call them "seekers". Me, I miss someone when I'm alone, and wish I was alone when I'm with someone...

    @Toyman1982 I don't think that's what it means..
the metaphor is that when things are too perfect, too 'rounds' with no obstacle, we CANNOT help but going by without notice everything beautiful and meaningful in life..
when everything is so smooth [you have tons of money, live in a giant house with servants, works on the 348798 floor, goes from your car-office-work, stuck all day long with your iphone/pod/pad/mac]

I should say the later story puts in the Buddhist aspect. THe piece was lost. The triangle couldn't find another to fit into. and saw a complete circle rolling along. in the end the triangle tried and flip and flipped until the edges were rounded and rolled (as a little circle) along side the other. (Equanimity)

@@1stunna91 I saw the same book on the last page of the book don't have nothing. I think the writers want us to think about what it would be like. It's a very good idea because in ending reads differently, it's up to the person to look at it. It's a book that I really want.

@Toyman1982 you won't be able to stop and look at the sky, smell a flower, watch a butterfly, think, reflect, take a deep breathe and enjoy the sun beams..
that's why every once in a while we need to stop and evaluate the conditions we are in, and see if change is required- and it's needed almost every time. so that you won't get caught in this crazy race of life to achieve and accomplish and succeed... but for what cost? for what?
that's how I feel this beautiful story..

What's the meaning of all this?
Maybe Quagmire is after all, not a sexual psycho but a pragmatical philosopher... not attached to anyone, only seaking his own pleassure in this short life of ours
    His message would be,
Don't look for your missing piece,
since there is not such a thing,
Instead u should try to live,
Enjoying all u can at peace.
    Mmm, his a pyscho right?
    But the message still remains,
We shall mot forget this lesson.
    Thanks Quagmire, giggitty!
