tony is un comparible no one can come closer to tony. In d year 1978 he has just developed these kinds of rhythem patterns on bass on his own .salute to u tony may god blesss u my dear
I was going to recommend you cover this song and I already found it here. First of all, I did not know that Tony played for KA as he was a part of RDB ensemble. Now it makes sense. Well played. Now the plot twist. I thought this was Yeh Mere Dil To Paagal Hai from RDB's Gardish. I would like you to cover it bercause I think it is probably the next bass guitar I have heard. The wailing sound he created to go with the mood of the song. I hope you cover it as well.
Hi Pankaj (guru!) my bandmate Satyajit Sahu introduced me to your bass playing. Now I routinely send a link to others to watch, listen, admire and maybe learn. Wow what playing. Simply floored. Amazing choice of notes, great rhythm, excellent runs with sixteenths that would have Jaco smiling down on is indian version. Satyajit was saying there may be a chance for your band to come down to the bay area sometime. It will be my pleasure (no honor) to watch you live and get to meet you personally. Thanks and keep on rocking. You are an amazing low frequency rider sir!
superbly played. But this song was played by charanjeet ji. This was confirmed by tony sir to his desciple manish kulkarni. he also commented that look at the notes which are more in number. Which was charanjeet jis style. Even all. jawaani diwaani was charanjeet ji.
Great job Pankaj! I'm just a beginner but I hope I can get as good as you one day. I wanted to ask you, how do you get that vintage tone? I've got a bass guitar that has 3 pickups, and an active-passive mode, Bass-Treble knob, Low Mid-High Mid knob, and a Tone knob. Thanks for your help.
Thanks Vishnu. My tone is primarily driven by the bass itself. It is a Geddy Lee Fender Jazz bass. I have a GT-10B that I use for compression, chorus, and phaser. Also I do a bit of amp modeling. There is a setting called Guitar Crunch. Adds a nice crispy top end to the tone.
Are you improvising some parts on your own or this is all played as in the original by Tony Vaz? Regardless its brilliant playing! Whether these lines are yours or Tony's!
Thanks! Some parts were not audible, so I followed the percussion. In certain places I replaced eighths with sixteenths just to enhance the sense of urgency in the song - it appeared to fit in pretty seamlessly so I just went with it :-)
Awesome playing and cover. Although I doubt I’ll ever get to play as well in this lifetime:) it would be great if you could break down how the lines are constructed and how to go about learning it. I’m not asking for something as onerous as tabs, but more like practice tips. How to get sixteenth notes with such reliable precision and what scales/modes/runs to practice. Also any insight on how the original bass player conceived these lines. What patterns form the basis for it? Thanks, shankar. Ps very very impressive playing and thanks for posting!
Sevak340 thank you, and highly insightful questions! The bass frequencies in the music of this area used to get muddied up in the mix, so I had to do a lot of EQing to make out what was being done. Some of the notes were still hard to figure out, so I used the scale (Gm in this case) to figure out the next logical note. As for the bass player's mindset, I could tell he was a highly evolved musician who believed in accenting all the percussion work (including every 8th and 16th hit) because it adds to the energy and urgency of the song. The bass is the propulsion, and the bridge between guitar/keys/brass section and percussion.
Sevak340 there is a strong jazz element to the phrasing of the bassline, especially in the interludes. And that takes the song somewhere else. The way the bass complements the melody in the first interlude is just brilliant. So are the runs during the last phrase of the stanza. I had to figure out a lot of those passing notes that sit outside the Gm scale. They add the flavor to the rhythm section
Sevak340 as for the precision on the sixteenths, it's practice, perseverance, regular playing, and learning hard songs. When I starting teaching myself bass, I tried to learn parts that were beyond my ability, and then practiced the hell out of them. Iron Maiden and Rush are two excellent bands to develop your bass playing muscle. For Ye Mera Dil, Steve Harris and Geddy Lee are my teachers. Practicing with a metronome helps too. Timing is extremely critical on 16ths.
