I just aquired a SX780 today from marketplace for 250bucks. It is a beautiful piece. Took the bottom off has the original darlington power packs. The face is clean, the cabinet is flawless. Did some vacuuming inside with a clean brush and now it is playing the essential Quincy Jones on my cornwall 1s. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I’ll be making those adjustments to my 780 receiver. I bought new in 79. Starting to be a little “off” sounding lately. Would like to have seen a little more detail on switch cleaning but, I’ll getter done. Looked like WD40 is what you used ?.
The 780’s are awesome!! I couldn’t get a good camera angle for the switch cleaning so I apologize. Yeah! I’ve been trying out different contact cleaners just to see how they perform. The WD40 contact cleaner was pretty good!
These non-sanyo darlington power packs have a poor reputation in the diyaudio forums. Fine for low volume, but don't expect them to last at high output. There are some pictures comparing the internals. And there are reverse-engineered mini-board kits available, but pricey. Fwiw i had an sx580 which could not hold a candle to the nad 7125 which replaced it, particularly for bass reproduction. I would love to hear an all-original 780 compared to one with the replacement power packs, or even see the sine waves at high power. I know there is a lot of love for some of these late 70s pioneers, but i ended up donating my 580 to my staff for their lunchroom system.

I’ve missed Tinkering with T!!
Bought my 780 new in 1980. Only the power switch relay died, 8 years in. Quick fix, and still going! Hpm 100s still perfect too. Great gear!
You're all good, T! Hope all is well!
Same with you!!
Please is possible change el transformador de Pioneer sx-780 al Pioneer sx-820 que tiene los mismos 45watts . Please help me. Thank very much.

I wouldn't use WD40.
Don't smell too hard that stuff was pretty good back in the day 😂
I don’t understand the input connections from the phone into the receiver with 1000 kh signal. Please clarify. Thanks.

I've had a 780 which i bought new in '79.Baby is still kicking ass in 2024 with a pair of EPI 100's.
You didn't say what to do if it's not possible to get the meter down to .000. Mine won't go any lower than 4.000 on the right channel
