Come to work with me as a nurse practitioner

  • A day in the life of an emergency nurse practitioner is challenging! We work a variety of shifts in a very stressful environment. In this video, I break down the process of how the emergency department works! We evaluate patients based on acuity, and not on a first come basis. This is for one simple fact: so we can take care of the sickest person the fastest! Also in this video, I discuss caring for critically ill and unstable patients in the emergency department.

    Fellow RN here working in LTAC/critical care setting:
    Will start my FNP program in May and am quite interested in ER work.
    My questions are:
    1) What training and education have you done? (FNP, ENP, NP residency, etc)
    2) Where did you learn the procedures for ER - I can only imagine an ENP program taught you
    3) Any advice or suggestions for those NPs seeking to work in ER and be competed/procedure trained?
    4) How’s the job market and demand?
    Your video was excellent and you explain things very well! Keep doing what you’re doing because you seem very good at it!

    Great video! Did you do an ACNP or FNP program and then pursue Emergency Certification? My wife is very interested in practicing in emergency or critical care as an NP, and is looking at schools right now. Many of these emergency department skills are not taught in FNP programs, so I'm curious how much of this is learned on the job as well? Keep up the great work!

    • @DavidWarrenNP
      @DavidWarrenNP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I did a combined FNP/ACNP program, and then I did an APP fellowship in emergency medicine (ont the job/at the hospital)- there was a didactic and skills component. It was all about emergency medicine for a new provider. Super helpful. This allowed me to sit for the ENP boards. And you are right- emergency medicine is NOT taught in FNP program. If she wants to work emergency medicine, the best advice I can give is to enroll in an ENP program through university. There are not a whole lot of them around, but it's the best way to formally learn emergency medicine. The FNP route is geared towards outapatient medicine, and the ACNP route is geared towards ICU management- neither have good EM components.

    • @DavidWarrenNP
      @DavidWarrenNP  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No- not a trach. I can do a cric. A trach is through the trachea and is a surgical procedure done in the OR. A cric is a procedure to establish an airway through the cricothyroid membrane, and is not permanent. That is taught in ATLS as part of airway management.
