For me, it's definitely
1. The Falcata (personal favoirute "utility weapon")
2. Ulfbercht viking or Nordic swords (very rare weapon and ingeniously crafted for its time)
3. The Iklwa (Technically a short spear but was handled like a stabing short sword)
4. The Gladius
5. The cutless
Yeah my list is definitely a little diffrent
Hello Mr. Baker, can you do an imitation of "It will keel"?
Look for when he demonstrated the Elizabethan rapier. Doug gave the kill test over to his European expertise.
Arguably one of the best shows featured on the history channel. Thanks for posting you guys are the best.
Hi The Rover! Thanks for watching #ForgedInFire on TH-cam! Make sure to subscribe to never miss a new weapon test!
Yatağan can be both short and long. In addition, it is not the "primary" but the secondary weapon of the janissaries due to be thick and heavier (comparing with kılıç). So, for this reason, they were often using yatağan as a life-saver, in case their "primary" weapon "kılıç (kilij)" is broken. Also in many yatağan (such as mine), when you look at it from the opposite direction you can see the "T" shape, due to having a quite thick piece on its non-sharpen backside.
The sica reminds me of the Uruk-hai sword from Lord of the Rings.
Hard to beat the Roman Gladius, trialed, tested and proven for many Centuries....
Outstanding!!... LOVE these FIF shorts!!
Greetings from Turkey. I am very appreciated that you chose our yatağan, many thanks and we love you all.
When I receive a massage "It will keel"; Most epic sound ever!!!
Hard to beat a Gladius. Especially when combined with a scutum.
Learnt from recent episode, short sword did more serious damage on body while giant chopper/ long swords usually bouncing off.
🤔 will the program compare different type of weapons with same blow? Kind of like Mythbuster test.
My favorite is the Gladius.
Good weapon combined with tactics
I hear a lot saying about "they had to use in right hand and the shield in the left", I'm beginning to think there wasn't left handers in army back then hahahahahahaha
Nicely done Sir !
Yes I have a question David Baker, How are you so freaking cool?
Nice show ......got lot of informations about ancient wepons thanks .....David Baker, Dug Makaida, Jay Nealsion .....hats off to you & last but not the least Will Wills nice host ❤❤❤❤❤❤

INCREDIBILI
What is the best way to start forging on a budget? Would you recommend building a coal forge, a firebrick forge or something else?
I bought some bricks and gazobeton in polish. Set it up with a steel pipe and a hairdryer, cheapeet one will do. Some clay is also useful to plug any holes you make have such as around the pipe. And some coal and firewood that is really it. Beyond that even the cheapest anvil, which i use. Something to put it on, and a hammer with a larger flat surface so german style as we call ir in poland. Make it around 750g. Because swinging a 1 kg hammer will tire youbin moments.
And that is really it. Hardest part is learning to stsrt a goof fire. After that you are covered.
Im a very very beginner blacksmith, my show is literally little more than a shed without walls. But it does the job.
Only comment I have is that this is pretty much the best show on youTube.
The gladius is still the king of short swords. But the cutlass is still awesome as was the xiphos.
Which weapons would you choose as top 5 from the show? The 5 best made overall.
5-Viking axe
4-Landsknecht Zwheihänder
3-Swiss halberd
2-Crusade Sword
1-Greek Kopis
@@nightwarrior2949 rhomphiaa, yatagan, kopis, sica and knightly poleaxe
@@nightwarrior2949 Not meant to belittle, but it's written Landsknecht and Zweihänder/Zweihander. Cheers :)
@@AvRac thanks, I don't speak modern German, only bits and pieces of middle- high German, I find it a bit more easier to learn. Yet I am extremely passionate about historic weapons and history in general. Anyway, greetings again for showing me the proper way to right it.
Please add the spatha next time!
Seeing them slash with the Gladius hurts me
No disrespect, just a little correction... The Sica was designed for a thrust around the shield edges, not to be used as a hook to grab and the shield out of the way! First of all the curve angle is way to wide for that, second, is a single handed sword and will take a tremendous amount of power to do that with one hand ... And last but not least, what do you think your enemy will be doing with his sword hand while you trying to take his shield away with yours???
"Cutlass"? I dunno, man, looks like it cuts a LOT!
There is a few videos about Khukuri (Nepalese knife), lot of people from Nepal are looking for khukuri's in the show.
First 10 seconds into the video and I say to myself "well I AM Spartacus” don’t cha know.
The cutlass is my favorite sword
Hello Mr.Baker, I was wondering if a cane sword would be a type of long sword or short sword.
the Victorian era british constabulary hangers are one of my favorite swords. short, hefty and purdy lil boiz.
What about “katzbalger” an iconic landsknecht’s secondary weapon?
Trying to remember what the light sword was called which was featured in the show.
I recall a hollow triangular grind and a unique 2 or 3 step in the blade that resembled a lightning shape. It’s a light one handed sword shorter than a rapier.
Anyone remember what it’s called?
What are some of your favorite throwing weapons David? I love the show. It will keel 😊
Hey dave baker i am a big fan of this show i wonder was the halberd a good weapon or a viking axe
I would love to see them make a turkish Pala ...
Hello David,
How many vests do you own? I am thinking of getting a vest for myself. What style do you recommend?
Any more weapons bein' made yet? Y'gotta git a move on w/ more creative designs (like fantasy weapons that could be battle-ready weapons). We could use more weapons like the Kusanagi sword (a two-edged sword), Caliburn (the Sword in the Stone), Excalibur, Durendal, Lobera, Colada, AND Hauteclaire. AND Tyrfing!
You've got a cutlass, but I've got a Cutlass Supreme.
I find it hard to believe that the Xyphos influenced the Gladius Hispanensis. The Gladius was originally a Celtiberian weapon. Though the Hellenes and Celtiberians had contact with one another, and their are even sets of Iberian armor with definite Greek influences. I guess it could be plausible..
Yeah I don’t think it was either, they don’t even look similar but the Greek Kopis is actually derived from the Iberian falcata that most likely brought back to Greece by Greek merchants.
I am genuinely surprised that the Ulfberht did not make the cut for short swords. It was a blade that was literally centuries ahead of its time.
The geometry was an ideal balance between stabbing and slashing.
But unlike the majority of its contemporaries, the Ulfberht would flex due to being forged from crucible steel.
It is difficult to appreciate the design, because quality steel is so readily abundant today; making analogous recreations of other short sword designs better than they were during their time.
@@elgostine I had no idea. It seems shorter than a standard arming sword... It certainly does not match the reach of a longsword. Is the Ulfberht simply considered to be on the shorter spectrum of arming swords then? Well, whoops! Just did a quick search and found out that it is the Sax which is classified as a short sword. Thank you internet. 👍
@@MrPittbull30 also the ulfberht isnt a special class of swords, its just a frankish style sword aka a 'viking sword' just made with exceptionally high quality materials identified with the inlay of the word 'ulfberht'
and theyre about on par with medieval arming swords in size,
and the longsword? thats in the one and a half handed/ 2 handed class of weapons. arming and viking age swords are one handers. and yeah viking swords are slightly shorter but only by a small amount in the range of an inch or two. maybe less since some arming swords were kinda short.
/.only the cutlass isnt a true short sword but thats because its short by comparison to much bigger broadswords and sabres.
the gladius is really short, the xiphos was anything from a full 24 inch blade all the way down to little more than large daggers. and the yataghan also was similar.
i much prefer longswords.
Archilles sword on Troy 2004 the movie, strong beautiful and deathly weapon
Dave looks so cool
Nice Video and interesting swords 👍
Hi Marius Mallkowsky! We’re glad you enjoyed the clip! Thanks for being a #ForgedInFire fan!
Bring back full episodes p
Hi! You can watch all episodes of #ForgedInFire online or on the app: bit.ly/37Zlplk
Yeah cutlass pirate bladeeee
Can you please do a best 5 Spears ?
Much respect for you tv show..love sword so much...wish i cant learn forg .become..blacksmit..much respect from Croatia..😀😀😀😀
Funny people saying you missed this, you missed that, those aren't the best in history... Its Mr Bakers PERSONAL favourite short swords that have featured on the program & not a guide to the best short swords in world history
❤ they’re all beautiful!
Say hello to the Yatağan Team👋🏻👋🏻
Se if you cant make an episode of the Finnish Puukko. Mainly a tool used for just about anything but it has also taken more lives in Finland than any other weapon in history.
4:36 Do I hear Age of Empires?
Just a minor correction to a mistake that everyone seems to make. Xifos is not pronounced Zifos but Ksifos. The word is used even today in modern Greek as a generic word for every kind of sword.
Hey David Baker what are some samurai weapons have been on forged in fire
what mustache wax do you use???
How about a forging a British pioneer sword ? I would like to see one of them made
Bro The Sica was an Illiryrian sword :)
How about the swords and knives in the painting of Ilya Repin "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks"?
5 best short swords, besides the falcata.
Why is no one talking about Ezio and his yatagan
"fantastic shopping weapon" what
You are holding the yatagan in a wrong way I am from Greece these weapons like many others Greek and Turkish knifes have this open in the back to put inside your little finger and use it as a break so as not to cut your hand when attacking
How strong is the knightly poleaxe
Gladius is the best
INCREDIBLY! -Roman
Only For Honor players understand
one of the hardest to make today whould probly be the viking short sword as there is verry few documents on how to get that mix of animal bones and iron ( will most likly get PETA and other groups angry aswell so might not wanna go the historical way on that blade ) but whould be kinda cool to see the the modern take on a sword that put the fear of the norths around the globe.
All shorts swords were too heavy for Doug, so Dave did the video lol
Who remembers the yatagan from bf1
We need my boy centurian.
U guys haven't shown any urban swords
can u do it?
What are the best spears ?
Could you do your favorite longswords?
I kept wondering about a thing, what is the differences between thermocycling and normalizing they seemingly identical.
What is your favorite weapon
Judge: it will kill
After going into a back room with blood on him
What about a Thracian/Dacian falx sword?
This was about short swords, the falx was a larger weapon. Though I wonder if Falxs and Rhomphaias could be wielded with one hand.
Well The Sica sword is a Dacian sword used against the Romans during the 100s.
Most importantly..
They all will KEEL...
Were there no left handed warriors?
My guess would be that they trained for so long it became natural to hold the shield in the left, and sword on the right.
It didnt matter if they were left-handed or not. The way their formations worked, it wouldn't work otherwise.
J. Neilson, Jason Knight, Ben Abbott, and David Baker should compete against each other and construct the Urumi sword.
Would it KEEL though?
A Yataghan is not a sword, its a knife!
In the show can we talk about the Ulfberht Sword (a legendary weapon ) in history just as legendary as the Katana it could do a very very good episode to talk about this weapon.
i'm sorry for my language, my translate i'm French it's difficult for me of speak english but speak of this armed *-*
Watch "Secrets of the Viking Sword" if you have not already, its a PBS program but you can find it on TH-cam. They examine the sword in detail.
Where is it will keeeel
Is there a way to subscribe to the history TH-cam channel but so it only shows forged in fire videos
hey, what about Acinaces ?????????????????
What about the Viking +VLFBERH+T ???
my main man, ulfbert is not a short sword, all though it is better then the "all mighty katana"
The Xiphos is one of my favorite Swords of all time
