    I'm taking a break from the kitchen today because growing food has brought me a lot of peace throughout the lockdown. It's kinda like Animal Crossing, but you get to eat your turnips. As someone who's tried hydroponics, raised beds, and in-ground gardening, I like SIPs because I don't have to water or feed them very often, even in the middle of a Phoenix summer. Less time irrigating means more time looking at cool flowers, weird bugs, and interesting growing patterns. Give it a try xoxo luv shaq

    Couple tips on planting I learned through some summers working at a greenhouse:
    Don’t push the soil down. If it’s too compacted your plant is gonna have a hard time pushing roots down. Use a good watering to help loose soil settle down without smashing your plant to death
    If repotting, be sure to score the root ball. We would just take a sharp shovel and make a couple light cuts. The cuts encourage your plant to make more roots quicker

    • @ulysco_
      @ulysco_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      came here to say this ! sometimes while repotting you will notice that your original plant in its small pot has its roots all tangled and compact, you need to "untangle" it before repotting. otherwise, no matter how good and welcoming your new setup is for the plant, the root might just never grow and the plant might die.
      it's often the case when you buy cheap basil, learnt that the hard way

    roots are so crazy, you'll be like cycling along a tarmac road that seems rigid as hell and then this one little tree to the side is pushing up the whole damn road with it's roots? they move so slowly, how do they have the strength to push the tarmac up? trees are strong, don't skip root day

    • @fergochan
      @fergochan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's precisely because they move so slow that they are so strong. You know when you're pulling a trailer so you shift to a lower gear? Or when you're using a crowbar to pry something? Slower means stronger.

    • @aaronharding3695
      @aaronharding3695 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fergochan so you're saying i could push against a concrete wall, but slowly, and eventually i'll crack it / break the wall?

    • @fergochan
      @fergochan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronharding3695 hmm... realistically you'd need some leverage, like a crowbar or some gears. I guess the story with roots is more to do with the pressure inside the plant cells in addition to the slowness. The slowness just means that they don't need a lot of power to push with a huge force.

    The hardest part of gardening is finding good advice.
    Whenever I look up anything about gardening, the advice is very complicated, unintuitive, requires prior knowledge or is not applicable to me.
    Like for example, when I was looking up how to deal with aphids. Tons of info out there on how to get rid of them. So I tried to. Until I came across an old guy with a gardening channel who explained in a very straightforward way that you shouldnt get rid of them, they are simply an indicator of too much nitrogen fertilization. They actually help, by sucking out the excess nitrogen and not letting your plants grow excessively.
    Of course he's the only guy out there that I can find who is saying that. Lots of contradicting info out there... But my money is on the old guy. He said it took him 5 years to internalize that pests are just symptoms, not the actual problem

    Once that there lemone tree ya done mentioned in brb gets a'cranking, are you gon' be educating some folks how easy lemon curd is to make yaself, or are you gon' keep using that Dickinson's Curd? $6 a pop for a decent sized jar isn't bad, but it's dead easy to make in a pinch.

    You are better than the president, so why not perform better than him? If you advise "wear a mask and don't breathe in the dust" you should indeed wear a mask. Many people look hotter wearing a mask. Set a good example.

Much appreciated!

    Does this mean the soil is flooded with water up to the drain hole? What is the point of the empty drain tube if the soil is going to be saturated anyway?
