When I was in High School, we knew how hard we worked, and how many hours it took to be competitive in field band. My band director took us on a field trip to see DCI East. That's when we found out we were amateurs, lol. Our jaws were on the floor the entire time.
Dude, if you liked this, you really need to see the multi-cam version. One of the greatest shows in Drum Corps history.
Especially the pre-show starting at "On the field..." and the closer.

DCI is a confusing world to come into blind, but despite you’ve made some very intelligent, gracious, and kind comments about the activity. One of the best things about it that I’m not sure you’ve been made aware of is that it is completely independent, you don’t have to go to a sweaty football game to see these guys because the events are solely created for drum corps competition and enjoyment!
I marched DCI in 08 with Spirit and competed against the top corps all summer long. Watching this group perform week after week that summer was an inspiration to everyone who witnessed it. to give you some perspective, these folk are running and playing an instrument at high speeds while having to simultaneously maintain forms and play perfectly in time and with the ensemble front to back. There is no explaining to someone how completely insane this activity is.
I was lucky enough to be in the crowd to watch this performance live.
It was incredible to witness.
Gotta get reactions to Santa Clara Vanguard 2004 "Scheherazade" and Cavilears 2002 "Frameworks" in the rotation.
Also some classic 1990s Madison Scouts in there as well. 1995, 1996, 1999...

Fun fact: during rehearsal, most corps use three generic casino chips in red, white, and blue to mark the performers' before, during, and after positions (where they were, where they land, and where they go after, respectively). Normally, they don't even get to see the whole shape- just an Excel chart with two columns showing their positions.
This show is widely enthusiastically viewed as perhaps the single best performance of ANY program (the actual programs as far as GOAT are hotly debated) in DCI history - primarily because NO CORPS has *ever* gotten the crowd roaringly involved even before the end of their program before or since. Koji Mori ( the Good Centurion who spears the Drum Major) is a legendary figure in DCI now.. THe Drum Major himself, Wil Pitts, is now a primary music writer for Phantom Regiment and some other groups.
I don't care how often I see or hear this show; that last minute causes an insane chill over my entire body. I cannot imagine being on that field and hearing that crowd response. Whew!
love these videos and to see you're getting into DCI. I highly recommend checking out another Carolina Crown show from 2013 titles "e=mc2" they won the world championship in 2013 with that. also "The Blue Devils 2019 Victory Run" is another must watch in my opinion
You need to see the focus cam version! You'll get more of the story, and you'll get it better like you were there!
A man betrayed, but supported by friends. He finds love, but she is brutally killed. He fights for revenge and dies, but his friends honor his memory and change the broken government that caused everything.
You won't understand until you see the second drum major charge and kill the first drum major with a spear, and stand on his corpse to direct the finale! XD
And the fun part is, this is actually an encore of their original Spartacus show years before this.

I think one really cool thing about DCI is that it technically originated from the military. You'd have the Colorguard and the Drum & Bugle Corps Marching into battle to lead troops/act as a rally point. As military bands became obsolete in the field due to radio, they became a "Boys club" type of activity, in which they began to compete in the '50s and '60s. So it does have almost all of its roots in military tradition, which is awesome!
Multi cam is so much better for this show. The story telling is unmatched for sure.

We do use the hash marks on the field as references. But as far as the specific coordinates go, we practice by placing different color poker chips down and practicing over and over to memorize the sequence of directions
You need to re-do this reaction with the multi-camera video.
This should have been a multicamera viewing. There were just too many storytelling moments that were missed from the beginning to end.
Who ever gave you the high cam did you a huge disservice.

Love this show, but why in the world would you request a reaction on the HIGH CAM? You miss all of the story beats this way. I don't get it.
Absolutely the worst visual program to win DCI. Luckily, both Finals drum judges were PR vets and set the spread where they did.
