The absolute heartbreak at 46 minutes into the run was unbearable. You can see and hear SB just PANICKING. I'm so glad he had such a supportive couch sitting behind him hyping him backup to get it going again.
He sounded almost in tears and I was aswel, but the heart really bolstered as the community outpouring came, the shine challenge, and the match donations.
Woulda been nice if they had reminded him to use the memory card before he died lmao. Later in the run they're just like "Oh yeah, you can just put in the memory card, it's super useful to learn runs and stop game overs" L O L
Yeah...that was ROUGH to watch live. I think everyone watching him, including the live audience, just felt bad for the guy for a good 20 minutes at least. I think the couch handled it really well for the most part.
Shoutout to SB for staying relatively composed and not completely breaking down during that moment. I sure would have…. Absolutely made the right choice restarting!!
Just want to say thank you for GDQ team who even though some things went wrong in SB's run. They never discouraged him and adapted quickly to change the run to something else. You'll always have some haters saying you could have done it better. But it was still super fun and I really really enjoyed this run still! Thank you also to the couch who also did a lot of talking at the start of the 2nd run.
SB came through and handled it like a champ. Props to the crowd for their support and props to GDQ staff for thinking on their feet. What a redemption 👑
I thought the game over was a planned gag, but then when I heard the breathing and felt the panic onset my heart absolutely broke for SB, to be on stage at a big event and suddenly feel like you have so many people to answer to, but instead of upset or heckling from the crowd, everyone gave him a huge round of applause on hyped him back up. I truly love this community, not only does it raise a ton of money for charity which is already amazing, but it closes ranks to support people and create a safe uplifting space.
Amazing stuff by SB to continue through that unfortunate mistake. Can only imagine what was going through his head and yet he still delivered an AMAZING run! Thank you so much SB!
Hope SB_runs feels better about the little mess up, I think it is very impressive to do any part of this run. I bought this game for the switch after watching sunshine speedruns so it always nice to see the runs
Great job to everyone keeping this run going. Good support from the couch and lots of love from the crowd. Turned a stressful situation into a feel good moment for the event.
Just really needed to say: thank you SB for persevering. It's good to see someone just get back up and keep moving, and succeeding regardless of the fail. It's really inspirational, like, honest and heartfelt THANK YOU for not giving up!!!
I hope he doesnt think he disappointed anyone. My thoughts immidietly went to 'great, more sunshine!' Great runner, great couch, great crowd, much love.
shame about the reset, but still an incredible run and really heartwarming to hear all the love and support from everyone to keep the run going! well played sb_runs !
This run is the epitome of what makes Games Done Quick great! A persistent runner, a helpful couch, accommodating organizers, and a supportive audience and chat all coming together for a worthy cause. The greatest among us always rise from the hardest falls. @SB_runs is now a GDQ Legend.
That restart. The tenacity to restart, the outpouring of support. This event and the community is just unbelievable. I wish I had time to speed run game. Congrats on the great event and you sir, sb, are a champion
@@wartortle577 becaude the event is on a timer, they have to go the estimate and nothing more; it’s pretty rare they do unless they absolutely have to. like multi hour 100% runs, but those usually happen in the middle of the night EST, allowing for time to go over since bigger, more popular games get prime time
i love a hyper-specific comment about a speedrun that's said with the utmost sincerity. The two guys lamenting "Oh its coconut" in perfect sync at 1:34:21 absolutely kills me
This run both hurt and warmed my heart to no end. I got so much enjoyment out of it, and big props to SB_runs for overcoming the nerves to pull off an amazing challenge run, and the audience and chat for being so supportive despite the setbacks. You've gotta love the community vibe. And the claps! Keep being awesome everyone!!!
Gosh I was broken seeing the "game over", and I felt SB was really terrified. But the crowd, the staff and the couch gave a lot of support : this was a great moment to see all this love in order to get through the challenge. 1:08:25 really touching moment
SB crushed this! Nevermind the GO, we're here to see incredible gaming and not to blame some unfortunate moments. Love to SB and the couch! You're great!
I absolutely loved the transition into a shine challenge to keep the run going, that game over was absolutely heartbreaking but this was an amazing run regardless! absolutely loved it!
I would also a 100% do this all the time as a speedrunner. Cant even have people watch me doing the dishes without giving up after making a small misstake. Glad you started over, big ups my man.
What a heartbreak in the first run, SB did amazing to continue- I left so sorry for him! I wouldn’t have been able to keep going. Having played Mario Sunshine I know how hard those stages are! Just shows how impressive the speed run is - love how it changed into a challenge run, the crowd and couch were so lovely. I’ve watched GDQ for a few years now and it was touching to see everyone back SB_runs 🥰
It always impresses me how much the community rallies behind the runners when a run doesn't go according to plan. It really warms my heart, the speedrunning community is truly incredible. SB_Runs I watched this live and it was amazing to see how quickly you bounced back, it was a spectacular run even despite the setback. It takes a lot of courage to get up on that stage and do a live speedrun infront of an audience this size, it takes even more courage to keep going when things go completely sideways. You've got my eternal respect SB_Runs, I hope to see you on the big stage in 6 months.
Was there in person, energy on this run was amazing. Crowd and chat were supportive. Im also the guy in front in the end waving an item into the air :3
dude, I highkey thought it was a bit but as it just kept dragging on my entire soul left my body. As a runner who doesn't like resetting short 20 minute runs on their own time I can only imagine the heartbreak of being forced into resetting while playing in front of thousands to millions of people after 45 minutes
1:43, 29 seconds into the run. Oof, in the name of speed, never tempt the gods by verbally announcing the memory card is removed, for they shall smite thee. Wonderful run, even if it wasn't the intended exhibition.
Major kudos to SB for continuing despite what happened, I know if I were in his shoes my skeleton would have simply abandoned my body and left the venue. All of the encouragement that poured in was incredibly heartwarming, and the run was so fun to watch!
SO much love to SB for starting the run over after those unfortunate bonks on Yoshi-Go-Round Secret. I remember that level giving me and my little brother SUCH a hard time when we were kids, so at least it was kinda nostalgic for that to be the level that messed with him? 😜 Mad impressed with how he handled starting over and the level of dedication, I would be crying so hard and might have just given up. You rule, SB 💖
No they probably will still use it due to how much time it saves. As SB said he didnt keep track of his lives. That's what lead to the Game Over. Floodless levels are great for farming 1 ups.
nah it's all still fine. If anything it's just a lesson to ensure someone on the couch or otherwise is paying attention to the life counter cuz if it hits one, the run just gets extended a few minutes so the runner can grab some. With regards to Mario games anyway.
For someone who, like me as a kid, struggled with Super Mario Sunshine, great to see the tricks and dexterity with each shine! Awesome run from SB and a great event!!
When he lost the run my heart sank... I get embarrassed around 2 or 3 people. I can't even imagine how that must have felt. Holy shit man. The fact he was able to go through and complete that shit a second time is awesome as hell. I'd lock up. But fuck it. One of my favorite games I don't mind watching it again!
the cheering at the 46 minute tragedy to keep going was just fantastic. cause you could feel his heartbreak and hear it. poor guy. glad he kept going though!
Much respect for SB, I don't think I would have been able to just start the run over like that. Even though it wasn't a 100% run i think it was really entertaining to watch (and that's what truly matters)
Big grats to SB and The couch commentary for rolling with the punches. the trick he was doing was not easy and with how good he is, he usually does not mess it up so the live count must of slipped the mind. but the pure ability to just say oh well and start a another one despite the long set back was incredible I'd say SB did a fantastic job showcasing this game and his incredible skill
Changing this to a challenge run of getting as many shines as possible was a genius move. I thought they were gonna change it to any% I also love how people started donating for the amount of shines obtained. Props to everyone for making something great out of a little misfortune. I forgot how damn cute Bowser and Bowser Jr are in this game
I remember how much I loved this run and how devastating it felt to watch SB at the game over, sympathetically. But coming back to re-watch 22's sgdq, it was still just as hard to watch that part. Had to pause and steel myself for a second after the full breadth of memories came back. I'm so glad and impressed that he pushed through it and how well everyone around handled it. It could have gone a lot sadder had they all not managed it so well and the crowd/viewers been less supportive throughout the run afterwards. It's always nice to see people come together to make an uncomfortable situation for someone less uncomfortable.
I felt soooo bad for SB when he lost the 120% run. But he still did a really great job completing it! I’m glad he was able to finish it, even if it wasn’t what he originally intended. I really liked how the people on the couch/audience/Twitch chat were being super supportive of him.
My heart broke with that game over. This run was amazing still despite what happened. I will always love watching sunshine speedruns and I'm glad I got to watch this live on twitch ♡
This run might’ve been a bit messy, but I think it’s a perfect example of just how great the GDQ community is. You can tell just how devastated SB was after that mess up, but with some encouragement from the live audience and donations, he was back at it pretty quickly. We all know the saying, life gives you lemons so make lemonade, and we had to make the best of a scenario that looked to be unwinnable, yet we made it work as a community. I’m so glad I’ve been able to watch GDQ this past year or two, and I’m so glad that the community around it is so welcoming and friendly to everyone.
I just need to give props to, specifically, 1upsForLife. She gave the pep talk to initially get the run going again, and moreover, she wasn’t condescending or dismissive. She acknowledged that this was difficult, but her calm tone and saying “we’re here for you” and “the show must go on” are great reminders of both the run’s goal and the runner’s responsibility. She reacted in exactly the right way, being calm and accepting of the mistake without dismissing the runner’s panicking, and setting the emotional expectation of the crowd and the rest of the couch to keep calm and continue the fun, enjoyable, casual run. That is crisis management I could only dream of. That was fantastic to watch.
the nervousness in SB is relatable to anyone who is a performer. the BIGGEST respect for being upfront on his mistake and restarting the run. madd love
SB panicked... and the couch helped him to go and metaphorically pick up the controller again, and do the run. And he buckled down and *smashed* it for a great run! Props to runner and couch for this, it wasn't 100% but it was still worth the watch the whole way.
If there was no chance for failure, watching people play videogames online in general and speedrunning in particular wouldn't be interesting to watch. It's beautiful because it's fragile and fleeting. He could have taken safety strats: waited an extra cycle, gone out of his way to stockpile a few 1-ups, used a memory card. But then it wouldn't have had any chance at greatness. Instead he put it all on the line and I respect him for that. He gets even more respect for picking up the pieces and continuing to put on a great show (still not doing too many safety strats!) and bringing in all those donations. Kudos to you, SB! This was an awesome video and you should be proud of what you accomplished here.
This is an event about showcasing speedruns. Most runners take precautions like having backups or slowing the run slightly to make it slightly safer because of that context and don’t really seriously attempt PBs or WR. I feel awful for the guy and I’m extremely happy that everyone was super supportive of the situation, but I don’t think there’s anything valiant about doing something that would obviously jeopardize the run and thus cause issues for the event as a whole.
I can only imagine how bad SB_runs felt. At the end of the day this is a showcase to raise money for an important cause. Finishing the run doesn't matter. SB_runs and the couch did an awesome job of doing just that. Watching SB absolutely crush the game and still manage to get to the end before estimate will probably be my highlight of this event
Super Mario Sunshine will always be my favorite Mario game in terms of aesthetic. Say what you want about the game's flaws and I'll doubtlessly agree with you, but I can't deny how much of a sucker I am for the tropical theme; beaches have always been my favorite visual to see in video games, and Sunshine's basically an entire tropical *game*.
I'm glad to see so many people supportive here as well, sure it sucks with that game over situation but hiccups like these not being expected is kinda the nature of speed running and while it definitely sucks to not get the full 120 the "backup run" got most of the beauty of the run. I definitely wouldn't mind a rule being put in place to have saves be mandatory OR to have back up files ready with future GDQs. Mistakes and failure obviously aren't planned around, but it doesn't hurt to have the failsafe ready for events like GDQ. Or if possible even something like edited saves to do things like begin with max lives just for the extra reassurance. Also for what it's worth, that secret that the game over happened on is (going off memory) the 3rd most painful level for me. #1 being the 8th star on the beach with the watermelons, #2 being the Pianta Village level 3.
always make up safety measures for marathon runs. backup files, save the current run every few shines. unlucky, but i guess he was just into the saving every second mindset.
Not every runs has to go well at GDQ every times ya know. Its pretty trilling to watch live when you know that anything could go wrong at any times. SB still did a great job recovering with a second run
Real shame about what happened.... this is why i'm so paranoid about runners not saving or picking up extra lives in RTA. Things can go so wrong so fast. Great recovery tho!
I haven't felt such heartbreak since that 2015 Prince of Persia run. I wanted to watch this live and was so confused when I showed up late and saw the run near the beginning. When I heard what happened my heart sank. Struggling with this game so much as a kid though, the focus and determination he showed in racing against the clock to get **84 shines** in the remaining time still blows my mind. When they said they would do the time limit, I know the guy is a pro but I couldn't imagine it being that high. Truly worthy of applause. 💕

I've gotten so used to runs that include a "gotcha!" fake-out that I wasn't sure the reset was real until they booted the new file
Such a Tragic Moment
They probably will never use No Memory Card Strats in a Marathon ever again
Are there any other runs that have been save-less before at GDQ? Seems super risky to run something without backups...
It's honesty really surprising they let it go this long without memory to begin with.
No they probably will still use it due to how much time it saves. As SB said he didnt keep track of his lives. That's what lead to the Game Over. Floodless levels are great for farming 1 ups.
The best way to avoid a game over like that would be to route in a handful of 1-ups for marathon safety.

NGL I want him to be featured in some sort of GDQ Revenge Run so I can see the whole thing. This was impressive as it was, and he seemed awesome!
Stumbled upon your comment after watching the revenge run, hope you got to see it !
What a champ, well done carrying on SB! ☀️
Nice run, good comeback!
Loved hearing the community come together for the run after what happened. SB challenge runs incoming.
This is why you should always take safety saves in a marathon run. Great run and great recovery.
Bout time I need some of that Sunshine to shine on my life again.
I just really wanna give SB a hug when the game over happens
Awwww that was unfortunate, love the support too
I'm so glad GDQ allowed him to restart.
I know it's been stated many times but shout out to the restart, that takes a lot.
always make up safety measures for marathon runs.
backup files, save the current run every few shines.
unlucky, but i guess he was just into the saving every second mindset.
The heartbreak at 47:30 is real. Great work salvaging it!
He shouldn't beat himself up about what happened. He's only human.
after all...don't put the blame on me
The Voice of this speedrunner is so soothing
Love how respectfully the donation reader chimes in to break the silence, you could tell the runner wanted someone to chime in
Show moves on bro ❤️
I haven't felt such heartbreak since that 2015 Prince of Persia run. I wanted to watch this live and was so confused when I showed up late and saw the run near the beginning. When I heard what happened my heart sank.
Struggling with this game so much as a kid though, the focus and determination he showed in racing against the clock to get **84 shines** in the remaining time still blows my mind. When they said they would do the time limit, I know the guy is a pro but I couldn't imagine it being that high. Truly worthy of applause. 💕
