I love the idea of making board bows and watch these videos with envy as there appears to be an abundance of usable wood available in DIY stores in the US. In the U.K. however, our big DIY stores stock really crap quality softwood and rarely if ever, do I see a store stocking better quality stuff. If anyone reading this lives in the U.K. and has successfully made a board bow from wood they have found in a DIY store, please comment and let me know where you got the wood from!
Great video man, I watched thr entire thing! I just finished my first pyramid style bow with a 3/4 maple board, and after working with oak, I must say the maple is a dream to work.. feels almost like wax! That Osage is gorgeous btw
Good video. Nit pick: that isn't a block plane. It is a smoothing plane, which is a type of bench plane. Yours looks to be about a Stanley number 4 size.
I enjoyed your video. I want to try my hand at making a couple different styles of bows, including Mollegabet and this Pyramid style. And I plan to start with lumber store boards like you did to learn on before moving on to nicer staves. I just wondered if you have had any problems with twisting of the Pyramid style bows. I saw a comment on another channel about that. But I suspected that it might have more to do with the moisture content of the wood than the style of bow. Just interested in your experience. Thanks again.
No backing is required with this piece of wood. The grain is straight. Oak, Maple, Hickory as well as other woods don't require a Backing. I have a lot of bow content including Board Bow 2.0 my updated design.
Congrats on a shooter! Shape of your fades risk popping off the riser piece. Fade should blend into the limb. Hope it stays together for ya and that ya get many many shots and much enjoyment from your bow.
The next one will be different for sure. At my osage bow building class the instructor made a board bow with a screwed in double laminate handle. This is my variation. If it breaks it will be a learning experience. Thanks for the comments. If it breaks I will make an update video. Be sure to subscribe to get the alert.
Hello everyone, hope you are all well. I was curious if it possible to make this style pyramid bow with a 100lb draw weight? I kind of would also like to make pyramid bow at half the length and have the draw weight. Anyone with any knowledge of this? Cheers Beautiful work by the way.
I hear that I can get away with 1-2 grain run-offs if they're shallow. Is that true? I have a piece of oak that has this near the end and I'm wondering if it's fine to use or if I should bind it somehow. Also if the grain on my boards are a bit wavy, should I do my best to follow the pattern or just cut straight dimensions for the intended look? Good informative video, by the way! I appreciate content like this. Thanks.
Do your best to get a board with no grain run out. 1 or 2 I would try it. I will be doing a bow backing video soon. A backing will cover for some grain run out. If you have a wide enough board follow the grain not the edge of the board. Good luck thanks for watching
@@BurningRiverBushcraft If you are tapering the limbs in both directions, a little grain run out will not matter that much. Because when you are rough cutting and tillering you are basically cutting away part of the grain. There's only one or two maybe three grains running the whole length of the bow. Now I admit I have never made a bow like this, but I have worked in wood for over 45 years. I have bent oak and other hardwoods around a lot of shapes that wood just dont want to go around. I would not let a little run out of the grain stop me from building. The piece of oak you started with would cost around $60-$75 dollars at the big box stores.
@@williamcastleberry7338 Thanks for the comment. This board was from Home Depot and was about $12. I know lumber prices are out of wack but I have bought boards within the last 6 months. You can get by with a little grain runout but I will always choose the best board I can. If a had to use a questionable board, I would use a backing material. I will make a video on it in the future.
I like that style .. I've always used fire to make a bow and I haven't made one for years but I'm wanting to make one with no fire and see if I can I watched some Kramer videos but he never replies
I am going to try fire a hardened bow for my next build. I will be going to Shannon Outdoors over the winter to learn fire hardening from the man himself. Thanks for watching
Long process but if you like to build it's worth it. Some say 6hrs start to finish but it's always a taken me longer Anyways thanks for the reply .. look forward to your next build
Making one like this myself right now, at work… so excited to get back home and work on it.

FC from NJ.. Awesome video and loved every detail of it! Thanks

Great tutorial, good shooting too! 👍
All the best

Supper video man, I believe you tolled us everything there is to tell, and that is something we don't get very often.
Thank you dad for showing your kids how to use his hands
Osage bow is beautiful buddy.
Thanks for watching
Awesome,
I'm buying my boards tomorrow. I'm also a lefty
Don't settle for bad grain and you will have a shooter.
Thank you! Great tutorial, i hit the subcribe button!
Great video thanks for this ! How did the bow hold up long term ?
I've still got it.
Just starting the learning phase. So there is no need for a backing? I'm probably going to try a maple board first. Thanks. Excellent video!

Great video man!
Awesome video. It’s unfortunate that shop class is not part of jr high/high school curriculum.
That's is a shame.
I had it in high school, wish I would have made bows in class lol

Beautiful work by the way.
You could build a bow with that weight but good luck on shortening the bow to half its length.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft I a have seen a 3 ft 70# bow before, so I do know its possible.
those fades my man
I made a updated video. My current bows are a little sleeker.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft gotta love it always learning.

How much wood removal on limbs relative to the bought board thickness, and length on limb?
Most of the time the bow starts bending around 1/2 inch. The thickness changes depending on the limb width
Thanks man
Hii small question. Before starting the tillering part, can you round the edges of the limbs on the back side. To prevent splinters.
I slightly round all corners. Be sure to subscribe to see my latest. I just finished an updated version of the Pyramid Bow I am making now.

Can you make one of these from a piece of popular
You'll have better luck with hardwood
Very good thanks man
So your top and bottom limb are the same length?
Yes
That number 4 bench plane is no block plane....
id use a spokeshave instead of a plane there cheap where i live im not sure about the states though.
I've got both. Thanks for watching
That oak board is pretty pricey to in my parts lol. I would to love to give this a try.
if u have Ash, it is a great ,material aswell
Do What wood you used please?
Red Oak
How long does the board have to be 😅 sorry
It depends on your draw length. Usually nose to head high for a longbow.
請問用什麼木頭?
This is oak. Any tree that produces fruit or nuts can be used.
😁🏹
Hi sir, I was wondering if you would.be willing to make me a bow, I would like to.purchase a pyramid bow.from.you.
D.M. me on Facebook or Instagram
@@BurningRiverBushcraft cool just sent you/ BRB a message
Has anyone ever tried a pyramid recurve?
It should work
Burning River Bushcraft Thanks. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Awesome video
If it were mine i would blend the riser down into the fades ..i think it would look better but thats me...kill any deer with it yet??
