That guard really needs something. The chunky size and sharp edges look like an afterthought next to the detailed and fine work of the blade and handle. Like you put a dwarf guard onto an elvish dagger.

    • @kyle8971
      @kyle8971 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

My thoughts exactly. The entire blade looks great except for the guard. Just feels like an afterthought or a placeholder for something that fits the style of the handle or the blade. Hell I think that even just adding some texture to it would make it 1000x better, but as it stands it just doesn't look right.

The handle feels out of proportion to me, and I don't like the exposed blade below the shoulders, I feel like the guard needs something above it.

I am pretty sure if he did that, it would point out how uneven and jagged that carving looks past the heads of the two monsters. I honestly thought there was going to be at least 2-3 more videos where he went back and smoothed out that handle.
However, I think Alec maybe realizing with Will gone and his crew back in Montana, all the boring stuff falls on him again (sanding, filing, finishing). That is why we have gotten a bunch of one-off design videos that are about the initial idea and not the follow through to a polished final project (i.e., sculptures out of nuts and steel origami).

Lots of folks are talking about how the guard is plain next to the handle, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.
But if you ask me, there's something about the elegance of the handle, but the simple nature of the guard and blade that just... Works. I love this piece, any further adornments would detract from it, and would happily wear it around medieval Europe.

Congrats Alec on another beautiful project, it looks amazing. As a gunsmithing student and amateur bladesmith, your videos are always a source of inspiration for my work. I'm glad you gave cold bluing a try, outside of firearms, bluing of any kind is an almost unnoticed art that most people have forgotten. Whether it's the rust bluing like from the turn of the 20th century or modern caustic bluing, salt bluing or in this case, instant cold bluing. Done well, bluing is among my favorite finishes on a classic piece. Keep doing what you do and always be safe around those caustic chemicals. My classmates and I refer to cold blue as cancer in a bottle.

I was hesitant to say anything, but I completely agree. I thought he was going to clean that all up somehow and it'd be looking great by the end, but apparently this is already the end and it's still sloppy. I feel like the rotary tool really isn't very good for engraving (though the heads did come out looking pretty good.) Maybe he'd be better off learning to engrave it the old school way, but that would require a ton of time and which he probably doesn't want to put in. In the end I feel like he kinda just gave up and called it good enough.

When I had to use cold blue for steel parts, I would clean them and put them in a plastic bag, then dump the blue into the bag to coat it. When the part was fully coated I would wipe it down with oil to stop the chemical process and seal it. This Made for a very nice finish. For very long parts I would wrap them in paper towel then spray the blue onto the towel for the same effect. Hope that tip can help anyone working with cold blue.

1:03 It looks to me like the monsters have a head at each end, offset by 90°. The transition to the horizontal bar is the flames the monster is spitting.

Still can't believe how you managed to pullof that handle. At firts I really though you where getting to ambitious, but thats what makes you beter doesn't it? Pushing the limits. Keep it up Alec! Love these complicated challenges you take on.

There was a part of me that liked the contrast between the red Dykem and the bronze during the early phases of the carving. Less so later on when the progressively smaller scales meant that the Dykem left after the carving was getting rattier and rattier, but that part of me had kind of hoped that once the carving had been completed and the Dykem washed off, there'd be some way to treat the bronze so that the serpents got back some of that red tint to them.
Still, the finish you gave the handle is also pretty nice looking, Well done all around, and congrats on having recovered from the despair you were feeling with the steel handle.

Beautiful build, Alec! I wonder what the Alec of Barker Street would say or do if he knew what Alec of today was capable of? I’ve been a sub since Barker Street, and I was amazed of Alec and his abilities then. In my opinion, you’re are an inspiration to all. Well done, sir. Well done.

Alec, if you find yourself wanting to make a line of beads, like at the end of the pommel, look into Millgrain tools. A lot of them will be smaller than what you are looking for being designed for tiny jewelry uses but they work phenomenally in precious and semiprecious metals.

Take a little tip from injection mold toolmaker:
Just put some sandpaper with double sided tape to protect surface you don't want to be screwed up by you. :)

With the patina on the blade, the darkened guard, and the weathered look on the bronze sea-monster handle, this thing looks like you'd find it in a locked box in an old Italian king's treasure keep.
