Couple of years ago, I was in Seattle, looking for a couple of mags to buy before my flight. Imagine my joy to see Strategy & Tactics on the rack. Thanks for the vid!

Looking at your magazine comparison. As always, thanks for the airtime.
Yaah! is published by Flying Pig Games. Tom has nothing to do with the magazine. We do cover Hollanspiel games, just as we do games from other publishers. We also cover a large variety of games. I think that is something that makes Yaah! unique. In addition to typical wargames, such as 13 Days, Commancheria, and Great War Commander, we cover Gloomhaven and Dead of Winter. I don't think anyone does that. We are also very proud of the full-color, glossy pages, and top notch writing/editing. Our editor used to be an editor of a major Florida newspaper.
Of course, as you mentioned, we include a game in each issue. Thanks again.

I'm a new to the hobby. Starting by buying magazines sold with a game is a great way to get into it since the game is usually relatively light. I've subscribed to Vae Victis, being a native french speaker. I like the publication because half of it is about reviews of wargames with a board (or map) and the other half is about miniatures wargames, which I also like since I played Warhammer all my life. I bought a copy of Against all Odds, its still in the mail. I chose this one because its not a magazine associated with a big wargame publisher like C3i.
Now Im looking for a publication more about warfare history but also about wargames. Which magazine would you recommand for people wanting to learn about history? Strategy & Tactics, maybe?

You missed out on Modern War, World at War, Strategy & Tactics (the newer ones), Against the Odds, Vae Victis.
Battles is mostly written in English. The authors are mostly poeple that have written about games foe decades, designed games, and/or run game companies. The only problem with it is that it is very infrequent, and sells out very quickly. Lots of back issues are $100 or more if they ever pop up on eBay.
C3i was pulled out from under the GMT fold so the Rodger could focue it on many other games and not have it seem to be a GMT house organ. That doesn't appear to have really happened.
The best part about Strategy and Tactics, especially the older issue, is that you can explore a game and the history as a small, self-contained thing and branch out if you like it. Many of the games try to do things in a new way or test out some new mechanic. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't but you almost always learn more from the failed designs.
The sub 100, 70s vintage S&T are all pretty cool.
The largest issue I have with most modern wargame magazines is that the history seems to be left behind or glossed over. Some of the games are really bad, and not in a experimental sort of way. This is especially true in many modern S&T and Against the Odds.

I was ecstatic when I found that there was a Strategy & Tactics all about the "Great Game", complete with a game inside called Asia Crossroads. It's one of the few games out there on the subject (you guys are going to play Legion Wargames' Great Game soon, I expect). I'm quite the Great Game aficionado so of course I jumped on it. And it had a wonderful 20-page article that summarized that 19th century "cold war" as well as anything I've ever read. It was wonderful. I have a few other magazines too (C3i, Modern War). Mostly if the games included catch my eye, as you said. C3i's are a double edged sword, though. If you get an older GMT title that has errata, you might see somewhere on BGG, "Oh, that game had corrected counters and an extra scenario in C3i #19" or something...and of course the chances of finding that are slim.

C3i Magazine might as well be the in-house magazine for GMT, it focus has been entirely GMT based, maybe one of the article on a non-GMT game in the issue shown in the video. The best part of C3i, which was touched upon in the video and the main reason I get a copy is for the errata counters and supplements for my existing GMT games. The games that are included are usually very good and are used to promote the existing full blown copy of the games they are based upon. The articles are pretty good, but I think many of these war game magazine's struggle to find content to fill their pages that is exceptionally special or doesn't focus on game development/philosophy. World at War/Strategy and Tactics still have very good articles, their games are hit and miss and usually with enough errata that you might need to download the FAQ if there is one to be found on BGG to clarify the rules. It seems that many of those games are quickly thrown together based on some interesting topics, but so, so to abysmal game play, it could be done better if their magazine’s were only produced a couple times a year. The other magazine that wasn't mentioned but does a great job, that I have read and played, is MMP's Special Ops magazine, usually produced once a year. Its main focus is on MMP products and their game systems; in that regard it does an excellent job. They have been including some very well done games since the 1st issue, mostly on topic of interest to the masses, but also games dealing with Ancient's to World War I. It does sometimes include errata counters for other MMP games; but most of the counters are for the games included in the issue. If you’re a fan of ASL they usually include a couple of scenarios, but if you want more ASL content you'll need to pick up their journal, it comes out once a year, if we ASL fans are lucky. The articles are pretty good in Special Ops; they usually focus on game play and leave the history to others to focus on. There are other magazines out there, but the video would have been over an hour if you tried to cover them all. Thanks again for the content you guys produce on TH-cam, I've really enjoyed the video and web content you both are producing. I look forward to seeing what you share with us war gamers in the future.

I only own 'Isles of the Damned', which are 2 games (Wake Island and Peleliu) from Against the Odds magazine and 'Crete 1941' from World at War, all solo games, my favourite is the latter.

Is battles mag not a subscription? On their page I only see adding current issue (which I don't really want) to cart. Can't find "buy" button for back issues or for subscription/next issue.

Thanks for the reviews on those three magazines as I'm now more interested in checking them out. Also, I hadn't heard of the Battles Magazine so that was a big plus that you reviewed it.
Now, for some observations for you to consider:
As mentioned elsewhere, you missed mentioning or reviewing a number of other gaming magazines so I hope you review them in another video.
Regarding the actual reviews of the magazines themselves, as the audience I'm not interested in seeing you per se but the magazine itself. I feel you would better serve your audience having your camera above you looking down on the magazine itself as you flip through the pages. I want to see the content of the magazine and not one or two random shots of it when you want to point out a particular page.
    I hope this helps.

As one what has play-tested 10 games for DGs mag games, I can attest that they are getting better at playtesting, but the games are still hit or miss.
Still, I am a firm customer of DG.
