I can remember Vanderbilt football back to the latter half of the Art Guepe years, and I have heard this story about how good Vanderbilt football should be and who they should beat. I can remember the terrible Citadel team that came into Nashville one Saturday night and totally controlled Vanderbilt for 60 minutes, winning 21-6. That VU team won only 1 game over an 0-10 Tulane team, and Guepe made his famous statement that "you cannot be Harvard Monday through Friday and Alabama on Saturday."
I remember the Jack Green era opening with a terrible home loss to Furman, again another 1-win team with no offense. There was a game at Wake Forest when they had Brian Piccolo, and Vandy was supposed to win that game, but Wake won and pitched a shutout.
There was a terrible loss at a very weak Virginia team where Bill Pace realized it couldn't be done at Vanderbilt, and when they lost to D2 Tampa in 1972, he resigned.
It goes on and on. What was supposed to be a blowout win over SMU was a blowout loss. Gerry Dinardo thought he had turned the corner and another game against a weak Wake Forest team resulted in another blowout loss.
Of course, who can forget the losses to Temple, East Tennessee State, and UNLV? Vanderbilt can never be expected to have a sure win. They will be lucky to go 0-8/3-9 this year, because it will be Georgia State's biggest game to host them in Atlanta. The Ball State game is a trap game where it is in the schedule, and a Same Ole Vandy issue could surface. Alcorn State isn't even a sure win, because they were rather good last year.
Since 1960, when I started going to home games and listening to road games, until I got over it and stopped going in Derek Mason's era, there have been 64 seasons. In those 64 years, they have won 0 conference games 22 times and 1 conference game 22 times. In many of those 1-win seasons, the defeated opponent won 0 or 1 conference game.
Vanderbilt knows it is impossible to compete in football with the other 15 SEC schools, because they cannot recruit 75-80% of the athletes the other SEC schools can recruit, and the 20-25% they can recruit aren't required to go to a Vanderbilt type of school. Some will choose schools like Princeton and Harvard. Others will choose Stanford, Duke, and the service academies. Vanderbilt has to make do with 2-star and 3-star recruits. In the 21st Century, fewer 4-star players have signed with Vanderbilt than schools like Alabama, Georgia, and LSU have signed in just one class. And, as far as I know, Vanderbilt has not had a 5-star player like Arch Manning, Leonard Fournette, and Dorial Green-Beckham.
Vanderbilt football players are not losers; if they get their sheepskin, they all have potential to become successful for decades and not just a half-dozen years worth of Sundays. Vanderbilt's chances of ever getting into the SEC Football Championship Game are about the same as having a future World Series between the Saint Louis Browns and Boston Braves. South Carolina has 10-14 points more talent than Vanderbilt.
Expect to beat South Carolina this upcoming season? Uh ... what? How about expect to beat Alcorn State and maybe if the stars align Ball State. I won't even go so far as to say I expect them to win at Georgia State but an SEC win may not be in the cards this season. They'll be double digit underdogs in EVERY SEC game.
